Hey Jimmy, being a retired OTR big truck driver, I quickly discovered that the more air you can put between you and the road, the nicer the ride! If it were me, I would go to the most local big truck salvage yard and pick up 6 or 8 of them (they MUST all be from the same model of trucks so that you get the same performance out of all of them). Also, you will need to get 4 or 6 leveling valves, as well as the shock absorbers from the same model and year truck you get the airbags from. These will keep the body "floating" on a cushion of air. The main difficulty in setting it up with full air ride will be designing a system of stabilizers that will keep the body in the correct orientation on the frame. I'm really looking forward to seeing your PRV (Plane Recreational Vehicle) when it's done! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!

Hi Jimmy, I love your videos. I am 70 y.o. now, and an airplane nut since I was about 5 and living near the Corpus Christi N.A.S. So a little history, FWIW. For years I flew into ABQ, and would have time to explore the area, where I saw Elvis's red Jetstar sitting on different ramps at ABQ. I say this, because the jet was moved around the airport. It was not exclusive to Roswell. I believe the Jetstar was in ABQ for about 10 years or more, around 1978 to 1988. I don't know much else about it.

Just cut some tire tread for pads to isolate the dissimilar metals. Stainless carriage bolts with thick, hard plastic washers to attach for minimizing electrolytic corrosion. But consider the mount placement for future access to clean corrosion that will happen. You will want a solid connction to the frame. No springs, air bags or even engine mounts. Otherwise the fuselage can get a swing movement like a truck carrying swinging meat. That's one of the most dangerous jobs in trucking. The RV chassis already has proper suspension, and the fuselage is far stronger, and more rigid than the old RV shell. Saw how that old thing came apart. The Elvis jet in the desert for 40 years with no apparent leaks. The leaks in the RV shell is what doomed it.

8:08 "... build a bracket to connect it to the RV...": Look into how they do that on ships (i.e. the bottom is steel, the top is aluminum). They buy strips of steel bonded to aluminum by explosive compression. They can then weld each side, one with aluminum, the other with steel. They don't get electrolyte-corrosion that way.

Personally, I would go with the dampeners. I have been driving trucks for 26 years and I can tell you with the air ride cab suspension that you suggested, you would get a lot of sway in turns and such. Plus, the wind will make it sway as well. That is going to be a real top heavy machine. Just my 2 cents.

Put airbags on it and two strengthen the frame by welding in X braces both weld and bolt them in place that way if the weld cracks you have bolts for backup and if the bolts break than you have a weld that can get you to the closest hardware store! Good luck with the project!

On the bus frame I would start with boxing the inside of the C channel frame rails, then weld 1/4" plate (with reinforcing angle or 1" box tube welded on underneath the plates) across the top and bottom frame rails in strategic places. The fuselage will lend some rigidity if you simply both through some thick Delrin blocks. The bolts or nuts hardware should be attached with insulating washers of nylon or any suitable hard, non-conductive material. Ditto on the X-bracing between the frame rails.
@buckmurdock2500

I'd start by ascertaining if the frame rails are tempered. If so, welding will destroy the frame.

Hocky pucks work great for body mounts and motor mounts for shade tree engineered off roaders... seems good enough :) I would think you would want to tie into the bulkhead on the nose not just the nose gear as the lean torque while driving might exceed the designed limits of the nose gear attach points.

Air bags are my choice but don't just buy just anything instead of air springs (the big truck suspension bag ) you might wanna go with like a peterbilt sleeper bag. The suspension bags can hold about 30k a piece that would be heck on earth. The sleeper bags a few thousand and would work perfect. Use the airbags! The rubber mounts are too firm for what little weight you are putting on them. It won't be much better than directly bolting. Plus the airbag can be adjusted with pressure and give a nice Cadillac ride.
@fanelli57
@fanelli57 Жыл бұрын
Using airbags means you'd have suspension between the road and the chassis and then the chassis and the fuselage. You'd still have to find a way to securely attach the fuselage to the chassis and allow it to move. Better to mount the fuselage rigidly to the chassis just as a car body or truck is firmly attached to it's chassis.

School buses use a standard J-Bolt to keep the body attached to the frame and use a hard rubber isolator between the body and frame. Now that frame will be flexible until you bolt the airplane to it so no need to stiffen the frame of the motor home, the airplane will do that. The bottom of the airplane needs to be opened up and everything not needed, removed. Then build a frame on the bottom of the airplane that will attach to the motor home chassis. It's not rocket science but a rock solid plan needs to be in place before you start...but you already know that part. This info comes from 25 years as a school bus mechanic and about 20 years of that as an ASE certified mechanic.

Jimmy! This is really a cool project. I'm so glad you are recouping your investment with tags. I worked on Jetstars while stationed at Ramstein AB Germany from 1979-1981. I spent many hours with a squirt bottle of wax polishing the C-140s. After they replaced the C-140s at Ramstein. The moved one of them to Rhein Main AB at the Frankfurt airport. Later in the 80s I was stationed at Rhein Main for 3 years. They decided that they would use the Rhein Main C-140 for battle damage repair training. I was appalled to see the patches on the side of that beautiful plane after they punched holes in it. I just thought I would share some Jetstar history with you. Keep up the good work!

Just my quick thoughts to consider… Possibly strengthening the chassis might include adding some type of “C” Channel “X” Bracing in between the parallel run main sections. This has been done on older style Convertibles. The “C” Channel can be actual structural Channels but they may be too heavy. It’s very possible to have a heavy equipment machine shop firm out of thick steel to make the “C” Channel and construct “X” brace subassemblies. How to mount might want to use Bolt on rather then weld. If the parallel run strength channels flex vertically, consider adding strengthener flat bars. You can make the “C” Channels out of same metal thickness as the Parallel Frame members. If you don’t know the Jet Cabin section weight, do what you can to weight it. Knowing it’s weight will help determine best way to mount on to the frame. You could design metal cradles that securely fastened to the frame and where the aluminum meets the metal cradle, isolate with separate neoprene pads and bushings for fasteners on all four corners. I’m referring to making the front connection into two frame connection points rather then only one. This way, the Aluminum cab section is held onto the frame by four points. This would minimize side twisting over only having one point. Marty Didier
@samrodian919
@samrodian919 Жыл бұрын
It would be better to mount it only on three points two at the rear and on at the front just as the aircraft landing gear. And a three point mounting is always more stable than four.
@MartyDidier
@MartyDidier Жыл бұрын
@@samrodian919 I don’t agree with a 3 point mount, feel a 3 point mount offers problems that will show up later. A secure mounting to the strengthened Frame provides a more solid assembly especially when dealing with road vibrations. Knowing the weight and comparing it to what was the Motorhome box structure will surface any other issues. Already there were complaints of the Frame during transport being flimsy, this shows how much rigidity is added with the fully mounted box structure. A 3 point on that frame wouldn’t be as secure as a 4 or more point connection. The rigidity is enhanced by increasing the connection to the Frame. Fewer connection points encourages a flimsy assembly. On this note, if a complete connection to the Frame is made, it would come the closest to having a box structure like before. Thus maybe it wouldn’t be necessary to strengthen the Frame.
@danielhendrych2166

I would try to sink the frame deep into the fuselage, right under the plane floor so it sits nice and low so you won't see the huge frame under it. With that massive fuselage on top of the frame it will be super top heavy and bobble like crazy going down the road.
@straybullitt
@straybullitt Жыл бұрын
That was my thought as well. Also, I think that it would be worth the trouble to narrow the track of the coach chassis so that the wheels aren't sticking outside of the fuselage so far. It is a lot of additional work, but after seeing that other plane/rv thing, it would definitely give it a more finished appearance than simply plopping the fuselage on top of a truck chassis and calling it good...
@PowellRoadDIY
@PowellRoadDIY Жыл бұрын
That’s how I’m thinking too. Hide the frame of the RV up inside the bottom of the fuselage. Somehow use the outer skin of the plane to cover the frame and running gear , air bags and any of the workings of the RV. And that would keep it from being too heavy in high winds. Traveling across country could get tricky.

Use the airbags off a semi. You'll get a much better ride. As someone who has driven both heavy machinery and semis, I would never use the dampeners alone for something going down the road on a long frame at highway speeds.

Airbag it…it will make for a nicer ride and lower the probability of damaging components within the jet…not sure it’s necessary to eliminate the chassis flex when you will have that separation and it will be driven over the road.

I think don’t forget that you may have to do maintenance on the chassis and engine so give yourself an in.

I would use the rubber mounts and then see if you still need to reinforce the frame The plane even using rubber mounts will help strengthen the frame dramatically A RV frame is almost the same size as a regular truck frame Just X from crossmember to crossmember if you think it’ll need it

Fix the landing gear and mount it to it, Then have the landing gear raise and lower the whole rig. In Los Angeles there is a low rider builder that could be a lot of help making it happen.

KARATE CHOP! 🤚Only way to strengthen chassis is to add diagonal bracing. Channel steel most likely. Better have a good mig welder, Jimmy Sky King. Thank you...thank you very much.

Mixers have their own frame which is attached to the truck chassis on concrete trucks along with mounting bolts and safety bolts

Do, once your welding and mounts have been accomplished / Sandblast and coat that chassis / with a high quality paint. No matter how much area the aircraft will cover, areas of that chassis will show. Make it a HIGH Quality build ... IMO

If you attached the front solid and attached the back using linner rails, like the ones used in the machine tool industry , it would be solid connections and allows for different metals expansion.

Box the frame it will help with the twisting. Build a suffrage to go between the truck frame and the airframe then use airbags to go between the suffrage and the airframe

Air bags definitely also two dissimilar metals so one side is getting welded other is getting bolted I’d definitely say make them steel and weld to the frame bolt to the body aluminum is to soft for

Sound system to reproduce jet engine sounds tied to tachometer or air speed sensor to ramp up as vehicle moves faster would be a great addition.

Why not build 4 saddles to hold the fuselage and then mount that to the RV chassis and it should also stiffen the Chassis? Just a thought from and old vessel builder..

Simple is the best way to go I would go for the the heavy duty steel fixing plate rubber absorption steel plate, as if you go with the Hydroelastic/ Compliance system it will need a lot of maintenance, The compliance system was made by Citroen and used on Rolls Royce from series1 1/2 silver shadow and series 2 silver shadow cars and most people who ever owned the silver shadow models will tell you they became very problematic as the car aged.

I like the idea of an airplane riding on air(bags). If they are something that you could service in the event one or multiple airbags failed, I'd say go for it!
