With over 2,000 video clips across 51 episodes over 13 months, our Refit Playlist video diary is a big commitment to wade through, so in this 3-part series we talk about each job from beginning to end.

How long can you have the boat in Thailand when you do a refit? Normally you can only have a foreign flag for maximum 6 month?
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 жыл бұрын
NO COMMENT - You are correct, six months is the maximum stay for a sailboat. But it's easy to extend this for a further four months. During the refit, the boat yard supplied us with a letter explaining Esper was having repairs done in Thailand and was not able to leave. As for us, we had to leave and come back every three months as per our visas. Liz

I got hooked on FTB with the Esper Refit series. I learned so much that when I actually decided to buy my first boat I was very knowledgeable at the survey. It would be great to have a “post refit” tour of Esper to see how the various areas have held up, from wood work, deck, fittings (leaks), stainless, paint, etc. You are a wonderful couple who take us on 20 minute weekly vacations to areas of the world many of us will never see with our own eyes, and we thank you immensely.

Ohhh it brought back memories. I think it was the first time I run into your channel, when they broke up the interior. Destroying an Oyster !!! I thought this will be the end of your boat. Ever since I am a great fan of your channel and think the team you both build to bring your boat back to that level is a great example of respecting cultural differences and friendship. If I recall well even some of the old team came back years later to help you build your dogger. How great is that. Big thumbs up for you channel!

Hi Jamie and Liz, Young Nick here who came to meet you in Krabi Boat Lagoon I think it was... When I saw the video I thought oh no more work but then realised that you are recapping! Excellent! Can't wait for the rest of the series. I would especially like to know if you regret going with teak again in the cockpit. We have teak on our cockpit benches, but they are solid 1-piece panel sections that hinge up for lazarette access or panels raised 1cm off of the fiberglass on spacers to allow water to run under and away to the scuppers. Pretty, but they are very hot and the last owner coated them with VERY slippery polyurethane coating that doesn't breathe so every crack or chip where it failed is causing water to get in that can't dry and is rotting it away. The cockpit sole is similar and is a big hatch that is access to the engine below. I fiberglassed over this big panel and now it is perfect and MUCH cooler. Eventually I will kiwigrip this for even better nonskid. So, wondering if Ii should try and strip, repair and use a teak coating that is more breathable, and less slippery, or just coat everything in a couple of layers of biax and epoxy before painting over. Shame to bury beautiful teak panels. I have a love-hate relationship with teak. I love it in other people's boats...hate it on mine.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 жыл бұрын
Hehe, we feel the same way about teak, James. We cover off the cockpit teak in the next episode. Because it's under cover it doesn't get too hot, which was always our main concern.

What your welder did for welding the back swim step stainless steel is called back purging or purging. He uses the same shielding gas (argon) as what he uses for welding (tig most likely) for purging the pipe. What this does is it keeps the stainless steel from oxidizing (rusting) and essentially ensures the stainless stays stainless from the inside out. If you dont purge the pipe your stainless will rust and corrode. Purging is good practice for stainless when you can.

What amazing work they did id say you got a cracking deal and a great team. I have seen other videos of a yacht that was trying to get a Arch and Bimini made by a boatyard and they screwed it up so many times and the cost was crazy. They was so disheartened they paid them and did it themselves. That was in the US.

My question is, if you had it to do again, would you chose the same part of the world to do the work. It's been a long time (I watched the series as it happened), but I recall you having a lot of problems over that year as well. Some language related, some with work not being done as you expected, etc. I the end, Esper came out fantastic and you forged some very good friendships, but would you do it differently now?
@jaquigreenlees

I would myself get work done at PSS. The massive cost savings and knowing the delays from cultural differences going in you can account for that in your planning. ( tell them every delay from agreed completion date is 10% off total price ~wink~ )

We'll cover this topic off in the third episode. I wouldn't say we had a lot of problems ourselves, only an incident with the paint team which we discuss in the second part. Jaqui just about sums this up correctly though.

How did you ensure your stainless was supplied 316 and not 304?
@followtheboat

You can specify either but we're in a yard that deals with boats that knows that 316 will be in demand.

Whew! I was flipping out thinking you were starting another refit. This look at the refit in a job by job rather than chronological order might clarify it a fair bit. On looking for the boatyard to get the work done, do you think it is important to insure that you can find accommodation and living supplies nearby? I know locally the best price for haul outs is a bit out of the way as far as living quarters and provisions. There is only 1 that you would find problems getting all work done locally, so the full service aspect is well covered. The big different is the yards only provide the haul out and space, there are multiple companies that provide the services already on site, or you can bring in an "outside contractor" as long as they will sign the agreement with the yard. That agreement being no polluting the environment and clean up the area daily.

@followtheboat 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question, Jaqui, because last night my mum said 'I hope you're going to cover off accommodation because people will want to know about that"! We will discuss this in the third episode and yes, it's of paramount importance when you can't live on the boat. It also adds to the overall cost.

On a slight tangent, does a steel hull provide more or less headaches where headaches = time + money? Also is Lamkawi the best place to buy a value for money boat?

My thought is if the blisters are not leaking thru and threatening to sink the boat and dose not slow you down. I paint as normal.
@jaquigreenlees
@jaquigreenlees 4 жыл бұрын
For a normal haul out, yup. For a full refit haul out? nope, that is the haul out where you fix every issue. When you are getting blisters in the composite hull, you are in need of a full refit fairly soon.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. In our situation the blisters were leaking but I'd also agree with Jaqui. This was the time to deal with the osmosis once and for all, otherwise you'll just be playing a game of catch up every time you haul.
