Total Suspended Solids Test

TSS testing measures the total concentration of suspended (non-soluble) solids in the aeration stabilization basin (ASB) or in effluents. The total suspended solids (TSS) data is critical in determining the operational behavior of a waste treatment system. It is usually a permitted test and solids must be kept at a minimum.

We need to find the mass of the filter paper because for inlet samples there would be a slight problem but for outlet there would be a huge problem if we don't measure the initial mass of the filter paper for that we should first put the filter paper in oven (105) for one hour and after that we should weight the mass of the filter papers, Overall the video was awesome with a smiley face.

Why? If you weigh the filter paper and metal tin before then after filtering and drying, the difference in mass would be only from the solids collected.

Did not shake the sample enough, did not rinse the inner part of the pipet’s tip, not to mention 5mL is not really a representative sample amount...

Should one find the mass of the filter before performing the procedures? Otherwise you have no initial mass.

The filters come preweighed. Weighing the filters before hand is bad because of possibility of contamination.

standard method i believe would have you clean and prepare the filter then weigh before use

Standard methods requires cleaning the filter with 3 20ml rinses. Then 2, 1 hour dry times.

It's a conversion factor to get from g/mL to mg/L.

The sample wasn't shaken enough prior to drawing the aliquot. A quicker way to dry the sample is in a low power microwave oven.

I'll agree with you on the first part, but you don't need to dry them quicker, just go do something else for for an hour.

It's not a million, you idiot. It's a g, so you have to divide it by 1,000.
