I know this is an old series, but I do wish you’d completely take strategy out of it and just mimic what the AI does (running your troops when they run; using abilities when they use abilities). It seems like your purposefully choosing to fight as the unit you prefer and making it more advantageous.

Okay, so one way I could see this playing out realistically; gladiators were often common folk or slaves pressed into the gladiator schools for crimes and as such had their armour specifically designed not to actually stop them from being killed, but to draw the fight out to make it bloodier (which is why one arm is protected - so they don't get 'disarmed', but their chest is mostly open because it allows them to get sliced and bleed openly). Meanwhile, gladiatrix were often nobel women volunteering to get a bit of excitement in their lives which didn't involve an orgy (until such practice was banned), so perhaps they equip themselves before battle with better gear (whereas the poorer gladiators just wore what they had) and start their interest/training in combat at a much younger age (ergo been in more fights=less afraid=higher morale) which also translates to being a much closer equivalent to their male counterparts with regards to speed/strength, allowing their better equipement to shine through? Obviously, that stacks a lot of 'potentials' for the gladiatrix and a lot of 'potentials' against the gladiators, but it's the only thing I could think of to explain this. Also, there are records of a gladiatrix killing a lion in a 1v1, so they could be pretty badass.
