I know the designer of the emotional support chicken. She owns my lys. I can confidently say no ai was used. She isn’t a professional designer so she didn’t do a whole test knit with it. She designed the chicken years ago and it happened to go viral this year. I’m super happy for her success with it as she’s such an awesome person.

This community claims to be so inclusive but I find a lot of people are very hard on each other. Knitting is not an easy skill to master. I am self taught off the internet and still learning. I implore everyone who is in this community already to be more kind and welcoming. Mark is a great example to follow. Thank you, Mark. And thanks to the emotional chicken designer. Who knew I’d need one just to be part of this community! Jokes, but honestly guys, it would be great to see more encouraging channels like this one and It’s A Sarah and Knitting with Florence. There are some real talented jewels out there. ❤❤❤

Quality yarn is expensive and my time is valuable so I am very selective on the patterns I choose to make. I get the vast majority of my patterns from Ravelry. I read the comments, look at the projects shared and also check the rating on the pattern before committing. I appreciate that other knitters share their experiences on the pattern.

I get my patterns from Ravelry, too. I spend a lot of time perusing patterns and reading comments from others regarding their projects. I find that is the most enjoyable part of the process for me. As anything in life, I need to prepare, but get on with it. Choose the pattern and knit it!

On my husband's new phone he took a picture of our grandson at a park. Somehow he was able to remove picnickers in the background of the picture. Fascinated that the phone could "fill in" the background appropriately where the people had been. Maybe I've watched too many crime shows...but it made me think about how photos can perhaps no longer be used as evidence? Another comment mentioned your sound quality....I found it just fine, no problems 😊

There is a whole field dedicated to identifying photos that have been altered. They brought someone in during the Johnny Depp Amber Heard defamation case and they were able to point out tell tale signs a photo had been altered in Photoshop. AI will make it more difficult, but there are already people spreading awareness of how to identify them.

Ya, I'm so paranoid I am always suspicious of any photo that doesn't have a negative... Crazy, I know, but at least with a negative you can see what the original image was. AI makes some pretty stuff, but it's just a veneer and can't generally be reproduced by an actual PERSON which makes me completely despise it. Also, as commented by someone else in here, AI made their WRITING job obsolete!!! WTF??? The world is going cra-cra-crazy... Have a great day.

I'm also a writer. Recently I almost came to blows with a complete moron who claimed to have "won" Camp NaNoWriMo by doing the whole thing with ChatGPT. Granted I over-reacted owing to having just spent 14 hours pushing to complete my own 50K using my own brain but I needed to be restrained from punching the lazy biatch in the face. She's not a writer and has no business calling herself one. It's not even that you get readable material out of ChatGPT. It's word salad. I'm very sorry to hear about your job, and am optimistic that people will soon realize that you cannot get good results stealing from actual writers and artists!

perhaps the one big "benefit" about the state of modern crochet patterns has been it's pushed me really hard to learn how to make my own designs, i've run across some nonsensical patterns on ravelry recently and it's fairly frustrating, pushes me away from buying online patterns, which sucks.

This whole AI situation reminded me of another scandal that happened recently where another pattern was suspected of being made with AI. You probably already heard about it. It's the infamous Stardew Valley chicken pillow. Apart from the fact that the pattern maker lied and said that the obvious cross stitch pattern wasn't cross stitch but a "new and special crochet stitch" (and blocked every person who was like "That's clearly cross stitch....."), the pattern itself was missing crucial information such as gauge and was pretty vague. The pattern maker themselves admitted that the *description* of the pattern was written by AI, so that made people suspicious. Especially after they asked for pattern testers and then rejected every single person who asked to be a pattern tester, saying that they already had pattern testers. The problem is that there weren't videos of the supposed "pattern testing" after the pattern was put to sell. You'd think that there would be a bunch of videos or photos from different people, especially since a lot of people were excited for this particular pattern to drop. The creator pulled the pattern, it's not for sale anymore, and they ended up having to refund people money.

While AI is fascinating, it's also currently just not scalable. Each PROMPT (yes, prompt, as in the thing you type in) takes as much energy as manufacturing a bottle of water. (Imagine that, pouring out a bottle of water for each prompt you type.) OpenAI eats incredible amounts of energy, which combined with the literal theft used to create AIs makes them just.. not worth it.

@@MakerMarkKnits In addition to the massive amount of electricity used to process each prompt, it takes a TON of water to cool the servers that power AI. Combine that with the fact that AI is built on a foundation of work stolen from writers, artists, musicians, and other creative folks like myself -- not to mention folks being paid sweatshop wages in third world countries to review and tag scraped data, including v1olence and child SA -- and there really is no way to ethically use AI. Instead of using AI for brainstorming, why not use friends or even your subscribers for that? It would help build your community without causing real world harm.

This is such a great topic! Thanks for starting the conversation! ❤ I have noticed recently an influx of “patterns” on Etsy that are just photos of vintage crochet items. I don’t know if it’s AI or not, but you ultimately end up paying for a pdf of a photo or two & not a written pattern. I could see the potential for this type of situation coming up with AI generated images and listings.

FIRST!!! Let me say I am so happy that I found your channel. I have checked out a few of your videos and decided you are a channel I will definitely be following. SECOND: I am a pattern writer and I DO AGREE that if you are going to put out a pattern for the public, it needs to be tested by TRUSTED testers. I have a great group of testers who are always pointing out errors, missteps, or perhaps wording that is just not clear. I am very nervous of this AI technology. BUT...I will say that when I have any questions of what I am looking at, my teenage grandson is all over it for me. LOLOL...so, maybe the answer for many of us in the "older generation of our craft"....hire a teenager....lolol.

Talk about fake designers who steal patterns. Or so called designers who plug a $35 skein of yarn into a basic raglan sweater and charge $12 for the pattern. And then release a cowl,mittens,hats, cardigans later and Knitters have been so bamboozled by the bs that they go along with this because they don't have the basics under their belt. There is so much crap going on in the knitting world. I love designers like the person who designed the chicken because it happened by pure happenstance. She didn't send free kits out to all of the podcasters to have her pattern promoted. This chicken has been out for a while and the whole thing happened by accident.

Hi Mark: I have not been bitten by AI yet. I try to buy patterns that are knitted by lots of knitters, that stood the test of time. Sometimes, I buy patterns that have not been knitted by lots of knitters based on the looks of the knitted garment. Unfortunately, in those instances, the instructions were not clear and I get frustrated and abandon or frog it altogether. Inasmuch as it is advantageous to designers to turnover patterns quickly and make some money, I don’t know to what extent AI plays in the process. Regardless, I hope that they and their testers will the time to thoroughly test the patterns before launching the patterns. It is hard for not so experienced knitters navigate mistakes. Thereafter, I will not ever consider buying their patterns any more. Thank you for sharing the heads up on fake patterns. Happy knitting! ❤

I've made a couple of personal patterns ignoring slip join and chain up that's usually an in-the-round pattern default, would use a substitute stitch marker to not lose my place, it's to get rid of the very noticeable spiral seam. Would very much like pattern creators to always specify, if there's tch's, if it's row/round, [total sts], if we start in the same stitch or the next stitch, and then there's some pattern makers who say "12sc across" but don't say they "count the Tch as 1sc..."

There was recently a seller on etsy who was passing off obvious AI patterns and pics as their own creations. Anyone who has any real crochet experience could tell you that there was no way what was depicted could be done with crochet. The pic was an oriental style elemental dragon that was so obviously AI, but unfortunately several people fell for it and bought the "pattern", then left feedback saying what they made looked nothing like the picture. A bunch of us actual crocheters managed to get them shut down and I hope they had to refund everyone the scammed. Whenever I buy a pattern from someone, I always check their feedback and see how long they've been selling. If they're new or the pattern looks suspicious, I'll pass on it.

I've been knitting since 2003 and poorly written patterns have been all over the internet the whole time. AI patterns disturb me because the people they will hurt the most is new designers. If you're an established designer, you have learned how to phrase your patterns to decrease confusion. You can also afford pattern testing from people who are not your friends. People also have much higher standards for patterns then they did in 2003. Now add accusations of AI generation. I'm afraid we are going to discourage new designers from getting better and drive them off instead.

I paid $10 for a crochet pattern that tells me: Row X: start w/ blue on front side, red on underside, work etc, TURN; Row x+1: start w/ blue on front side. Excuse me, you told me to TURN. How would blue still be on front?! Thankfully, even though I have to basically re-write my row instructions, the counts and setup were correct and those are the crucial side of the project. But damn... And this is a human-made pattern, though I don't know if AI was used to write the instructions.

Mark Vogel I watch several people that create their own recipes and have cookbooks for sell. They are always showing a recipe and cook it on the video. One lady got upset and said that she has tested her recipes over and over for years . When AI is used it pulls up any recipes and not all these recipes are good recipes and most are not and have never been tested. She ask her viewers to not use AI for her recipes because they are not her recipes. Food is to expensive with inflation to guess if a dish is going to be a good one. I really never knew anything about AI until it popped up underneath a cooking video, then I understood what that lady was talking about. I Love to watch Brenda Ghannt cooking video’s on Facebook. They should not try to fool people with fake crap. It is almost like a scammer. Sometimes you have to have a little common sense to tell if it is really fake or real. Some folks do not have that. On the channel "Just Vintage Crochet," Corrina (the host) has a video about crochet and AI. She asked it to generate a doily pattern, and it did, but it became unworkable right in the middle, because of the way it was written. It has been my experience that AI has no great sense of mathematical logic, it doesn't know much about crochet, it has no sense of humor, and it withholds information for the sake of not being offensive. For those worried about AI taking over the world, it's not going to happen anytime soon, so we can all rest easy.

Are you sure about not being offensive? I had to give up my hairdresser because she doesn't know the difference between ChatGPT and reputable news sites (or even a bloody search engine), and the things she was saying she "learned" from AI about the situation in Gaza was as if someone taken the worst sexual sadists in history and made them into an army. Completely unbelievable stuff- she claimed she'd seen reports of body parts being used for hacky sacks, etc. I was horrified by the fact that a grown woman who's smart enough to run her own business couldn't tell what was a computer hallucinating and what was actual news.

I have stayed away from AI because of the plagarism inherent in it. I do think it might have some benefits, but I think like all automation, it simply proves the need for Universal Basic Income, and until all people can live without the fear of poverty, we won't be able to really embrace technological advances. That being said, i really don't understand what AI can do other than speed up the souless art of marketing. For all other artistic and creative projects, it is useless.

Hi Mark. (And other crafters) Can you answer a quick question. I love how the cakes look but have been told recently that I should NEVER cake my yarn unless I am going to use it very soon and that it ruins the tension of the yarn. Is this true in your experience? Obviously I am watching you cake yarn and just wondering are you going to use those very soon. I have a small space and the cakes were fitting much better in their respective storage areas.
@MakerMarkKnits
@MakerMarkKnits 2 ай бұрын
Yes! That's generally the idea. Once yarn is caked, there is much more tension on the strand, and it can affect the integrity of the yarn if it sits like that forever! When I wind my yarn, I'm usually planning to start the project immediately ☺️ Sometimes plans change and I end up postponing a project - and it's not the end of the world in that case. But ideally yes, I only wind when I'm ready to use the yarn!

There are many designers out there that really do a good job, so u just need to ask questions if u don’t understand. So some Ravelriers are very kind and generous with their knowledge, but some aren’t. Just be ready to be ignored if u ask questions and no one answers. Ha. Thank you SO much for pointing that out. Somehow the edited description box for this video disappeared upon its premiere! Here are the links I mentioned: www.crochet365knittoo.com/ai-and-crochet/ www.reddit.com/r/craftsnark/comments/16zpwhf/ai_generated_crochet_patterns_anyone/?rdt=52063

The colors of the yarn are beautiful! Norman of Nimble Needles is using these colours for his tutorials, they are very good to see. (Sorry my bad english - I am Austrian). Using AI: Its total possible, that ChatGPT is writing a sock pattern - even with cables. I have tested it for Vanilla Socks in a huge size for my son, and it worked very good. Its like a "normal" written pattern. So ... if you would please share the article you mentioned, I would really be happy. Thank you!

Personally, I find it very frustrating when a crochet pattern is written exactly like a knitting pattern. They are different operating systems so need different coding to make them work. When you confuse the coding, put playstation coding in an Xbox game it doesn't work as it should. The same goes with putting knitting coding in a crochet pattern.

That's a great comparison! In my experience, the thickness of crocheted fabric compared to knit makes a huge difference on its own.

I can usually spot AI, because it will be something "AMAZING" and "WONDERFUL", that nobody ever saw before-- because it can't exist in reality. I think along with cryptocurrency, AI is an unneeded and unaskedfor waste of electricity. Just when we're trying to go carbon neutral, they think up something else to waste energy on. Like, what might be different if we had not all gone digital and online back in the 1990s? It's something I think about a lot.

Just have to get this out of my chest… in my opinion the “emotional” chicken (knit or crochet) is one of the stupidest patterns and things to knit or crochet. Otherwise love your content.

I did at first but thought you know this might be a great way to use up a lot of acrylic yarns I have laying around, and you know I got hooked,such a cute outcome. I’ve made 5 now, on my 6th. The grandkids love them!

As much as I like the winding concept, I think noise canceling distorts and makes your voice a bit too mechanical. I know that you are careful and picky about these stuff, so wanted to let you know ❤
