don't forget Dieter Brock. Brock led the Rams to a division title, the #2 seed in the NFC playoffs, and set team rookie records for passing yards (2,658), touchdown passes (16), and passer rating (81.8)

It was really disappointing to see him have one bad game after a wonderful season with the Rams and that was the playoffs. The fans were merciless and his retired soon after that. What could have been if he had his mojo that day. His side arm pass was a bullet.

Regardless, this video states that he won in 1980 and 1982. What, was he demoted to backup in 1981? No, this video is just plain wrong.

@ true ... but Moon played alot. Wilkie was close to retiring and had some injuries. Moon had like 1,100 yards his rookie year, jumped to around 2,200 his second season then i think 3,400 his 3rd season ...then i think 2 seasons in the 4,000 to 5,000 yard area... not specific numbers for sure. Just general. But yes he was Wilkie's backup but i still believe Moon played in all 5 Grey Cups and started 3 .
@quentin3330
@quentin3330 6 жыл бұрын
@@AvroBellow 1981 Grey Cup was a weird one. 14-2 Edmonton vs 5-11 Ottawa. Ottawa had Oklahoma Rookie QB J.C. Watts and led 20-1 at Halftime. Moon started..played poor ...was benched for old Wilkie ....then they pulled Wilkie and put Moon back in ...he fumbled .... but he also scored a 1 TD ... maybe 2 TD's but anyhoo not a great gamebut enough for the comeback. Edmonton 26 Ottawa 23 . Would have been the biggest upset in Grey Cup history. Ottawa were terrible. Give them credit they won both their playoff games. Sorry i have no idea who they beat . Kinda think Hamilton was one of them. Anyhoo... i still remember that Grey Cup cuz my parents took me to Hawaii and it was hard to get any info. We had to call home to find out the score. Ahhhh pre internet days, lol.

Since three of the guys on this list started their careers in the NFL (Rison, Flutie and Biletnikoff), and one was a coach (Marv Levy), and this was supposed to be about players that started their careers in the CFL, how about these guys: Mervyn Fernandez (played with the BC Lions before going to the Oakland Raiders), Terry Greer (Argonauts great who eventually went to play with the Browns), Sam Etcheverry (Montreal Alouettes star QB who would play for the Chicago Cardinals), and Brandon Browner (played with Calgary before going to the Seahawks). Could also include Mike Vanderjagt, Jon Ryan and Terry Metcalfe.
@twillis449
@twillis449 Жыл бұрын
Yeah - I saw Sam 'the Rifle' Etcheverry play on those great Montreal Alouette teams of the 1950s. Unfortunately when he got to the 'St Louis' (they had moved from Chicago by then) Cardinals in 1961, he either got an arm injury pretty quickly (or had already had it by the time he got to St Louis) so his Cardinals career was not really successful. He returned to Montreal and lived there until he died in 2009.

If you mention MarvLevy, you have to include Coach Bud Grant, with a statue at the Minnesota Vikings Stadium and he was just as much a fixture for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, before he went South. I don't think he ever had a bad team in either league and usually made the Finals, though he didn't win them!

BTW the Baltimore CFLers/Stallions were not a failure in both play and attendance. They were popular, sold seats, and even won a Grey Cup. When the Browns move to Baltimore was announced to become the Ravens, they didn't want to compete with an NFL team. Although on paper, the Stallions folded, In reality, they moved to Montreal and took in the Alouettes name and history.

Why no love for Cookie Gilchrist? He twice led the AFL in rushing, had a 1096 yard season in 1962 and followed that up with 3 consecutive 900+ yard rushing seasons. Also, how about Tobin Rote, who set records with the Argonauts that stood until Flutie broke them. Rote is the only QB to guide three different teams in three different leagues to the playoffs.

Warren Moon if you combine both his pro careers he was the first to reach a total of 70,000 yards passing may not got a Super Bowl but 5 back to back Grey Cups within 6 years and a 3x HoF man what a career and so many other awards. Plus he did all of that when nobody even wanted a black quarterback truly ahead of his time, a cut above the rest, and an outstanding person with a stellar career.

In 1978...79...or 80. I cant recall, but I was a grade 6 student in Edmonton at a French Immersion school there. Lots of rich kids went to Grandin School for a bilingual education there. And, every winter, we would have a bake sale with all types of items up for raffle. I loved Moon so much I borrowed...*borrowed* so many quarters in order to fill out as many Moon raffle tix as I could in order to win that jersey. Of course....I lost. Lost out to a ffiend of mine who bought 4-tix for a buck!?! I was devastated. Needless to say that she, of course, won this aweaome jersey and I was stuck with 13 disgusting muffins that I wanted no part of! I later found out that she had her pops later give it up for some insane prize at another sale for a MUCH reduced price...of 10$. It was the most devastating loss of my life!! Let alone...a loss of a jersey I NEVER wanted to lose in my entire life. Such is...and WAS life back then as a grade 6 toque!! Good for her, them, and Warren Moon!! He was awesome!!!

If you can have Marv Levy you should Bud Grant:(born May 20, 1927) former head coach and player of American football, Canadian football, and a former basketball player in the NBA. Grant served as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) for 18 seasons; he was the team's second (1967-83) and fourth (1985) head coach, leading them to four Super Bowl appearances, 11 division titles, one league championship and three NFC conference championships. Before coaching the Vikings, he was the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) for ten seasons, winning the Grey Cup four times. Grant is the most successful coach in Vikings history, and the third most successful professional football coach overall (behind Don Shula and George Halas), with a combined 283 wins in the NFL and CFL. Grant was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. He was the first coach to guide teams to the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl, the only other being Marv Levy. Bud also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Lakers. Your list fails and earns a downvote from me.

Two points of disagreement. True Joe Theismann broke his leg and it ended his career. But it wasn't like he was just starting out. He was 36 and not playing well for the Redskins. Also didn't Flutie also play for the Donald Trump's New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League. This would put Flutie into a very small group of people that can say they played in three different leagues (NFL,CFL, and USFL).
@twillis449

Yes, Doug started out with the NewJersey Generals and only went to the NFL after the USFL folded in 1986. I think he got a lot of $$$ to sign with the USFL and he was the USFL's marquee player.

From 79-81 the CFL signed a few 1st round NFL picks like 79 #1 overall pick LB Tom C-I won't attempt to spell his last name. He didn't want to play for the Bills, so signed and played four years in the CFL-Toronto, I believe, then with the Bills still holding his NFL rights, forced a a trade to the Clowns-where he was mediocre at best. Bruce Clark was a 1st round pick in 80 by the Packers, and he signed with the CFL. He went back to the NFL after forcing a trade from the Packers to the Saints. He made a Pro Bowl with the Saints. David Overstreet a RB, was drafted in the 1st round in 81 by the Dolphins. Overstreet would play two years with the CFL and then sign with the Dolphins. He died in a car accident after playing a season with the Dolphins. Keith Gary- drafted first round by the Steelers. Signed with Montreal, played two years in the CFL. Then signed with the Steelers. He is known for that cheapshot, of grabbing and holding the facemask of Ken Anderson! In the 82 draft, the Bills drafted a QB named Matt Kofler, and actually got into a bidding war with a CFL team for him, signing him to one of the biggest contracts for a 2nd rounder in 82.. Kofler proved to be a bust.

One more name that doesn't exactly fit the list but who is interesting, is Lawrence Tynes, who played for the Ottawa Renegades in 2002-03. He actually played first in the NFL with the Chiefs (for 1 season) and thereafter with the Scottish Claymores in the WLAF (also for 1 season) before joining Ottawa (for you guessed it, one season, as well). I stuck Tynes on this list because I felt he first established himself as an outstanding kicker in his one season with Ottawa which thereafter served as a launching point and permanent move into the NFL as a player. Tynes' best years were with NYG where he won 2 Super Bowls.

NFL fans who put down the CFL (& other pro leagues) hve always puzzled me. 80,000 fans pack a stadium to watch a college game. Those same college players end up playing for CFL, USFL, XFL, etc etc so um what is the diff? Why such hatred for non NFL football? (even the rules are different doesnt make sense as many things tested at college level ends up in NFL rules...)

If you are including coaches, you also do need to include Bud Grant. As for players, I would say Doug Flutie had a bigger impact on the CFL than did Warren Moon. When he first went to Ednonton, Warren shared QB duties with Tom Wilkinson for a couple of seasons. Doug Flutie was considered 'too small' for the NFL, although I think that given today's NFL emphasis on mobile QBs, Doug would have been a first-round draft choice today.

Joe Theismann did not have a lot left in his career, he had already played about 15 years in both leagues, how much longer do you think he would have had?

As to Garcia. He did not win the 1986 Grey Cup. Small point but the Hamilton Tiger Cats won that year. He probably did but it wasn't that year.
