Totem poles can be found across British Columbia and feature a variety of totem animals, or doodems, other animals, and also people. Each one is carved and they are used to tell stories and even recounts of historical events significant to the community.
There's a common misconception that the bottom figure is the "low man on the totem pole" and is not highly revered. This is not true, as the bottom figure can be viewed as the strongest as they support all the other figures above them. So, being called the "low man on the totem pole" could actually be considered a compliment!
If you visit British Columbia or even pass through the Vancouver Airport it is worth seeking out the totem poles and other artwork.

We hope you have a wonderful holiday Donna! We enjoyed seeing all the totem poles including the worlds tallest free standing one! Love tradition, but like they keep this one preserved. Great to see all the detail and enjoyed hearing that they all told some of the Indigenous Peoples legends and traditions. Beautiful and informative video. Thanks for bringing us along!

Thanks so much, Jennifer! I would highly recommend a visit to Victoria and on our whale-watching tour we met a couple who were visiting from Washington, which was fascinating as they already knew about a lot of the Killer Whales who reside in the area.

@@DonnaTaibossigai Exciting! It’s not that far away- we haven’t visited for a long time though! We drove to Calgary and Banff about 10 years ago, that was our last visit to Canada. We had a great time! I think we would go more but the border crossing can be a very long wait- that’s our excuse, lol. Thanks!

On a previous visit to Vancouver, I was impressed by the ancient art in the museum. The bold patterns of whales, Raven, and other bold designs are amazing, and I find it interesting that they are culturally similar to Hawaii and Japan.👍✨

It's very true. I've noticed a lot of similarities between the Ainu and the West Coast peoples. I believe they are distantly related and very cool that groups of people across the ocean still have such similarities.

Vancouver is nice but I honestly enjoy Victoria more. To me it's more picturesque and walkable. Seeing the totem poles is always enjoyable. The tallest one was from one of the giant cedars and I think I read it had fallen in the water, pulled out and the branches trimmed off. Thanks so much for watching, Dave!

This is such a great video to honour National Indigenous Day Donna. These totem poles are incredible, I love seeing the workshop how they make them. I can't believe how high they are. Such beautiful colors and details put into them. I went to that museum as a teenager and loved it. Loved learning about the ones they have there. I had no idea one was damaged by a fire in the 80s. Hi M&M! Nice to hear from you! The tall one is carved from one single tree, which is why it gets so narrow at the top. I read that they recovered it from a tree that had fallen in the water. Pretty amazing work and it must have been amazing as the carver to see it standing there.

Wow. The totem poles are incredible Donna. What I find interesting is how tall they are which can be seen from a far distance but the closer you get the more fantastic details and colors emerge. Also why is the placement of some of the carvings on their side or upside down. There must be many wonderful stories to learn. I also enjoy seeing the birds, those wings and beaks sticking straight out. So wonderful... Best regards, Cathy
