In this episode, we complete the top wishbone refurb by powder-coating the forging, using a press to fit the new ball joint, new fulcrum bushes and re install the wishbone with the correct shims.
Completing this task myself has saved me a minimum of £340 over buying rebuilt top wishbones.
Here are some links to tools and parts similar to those described or shown in the video.

I had to do this 2 years ago and the bolt was an absolute pig to get out. Literaly took days. I highly recommend greasing that bolt and whenever you are in the wheel well, loosent the nut and rotate the bolt a few turns before tightening the nut again. It can save you a world of pain in the future.

Good advice👍. I know tht the bolt does not need to move in the subframe, but 100% agree that it should be greased. I too have shed a tear trying to remove a frozen bolt.

Great video as usual, John. However, I would have used silicone grease, either solid or spray, as that is much better suited to plastics and rubber. I suspect that a petroleum-based grease will tend to promote deterioration of the bushes. Richard

A perfect job, John. Well done. With all new rubber I like to coat with Silicone Grease to keep it supple longer.

Great tip as always Gary. The bushes had (red) silcone grease inside them as supplied but I think I will order myself a stash for preservation purposes👍

Another great video and I may never catch up to learn all I can about my wonderful 2005XK8 silver bullet convertible - but Im trying. I have an issue unrelated to this video, but hope an answer can be found. I have had multiple codes for misfire some even saying all 8 cylinders were misfiring. Now I'm no trained mechanic but my Jag runs great, excellent excelleration, pretty steady idol. I've cleaned throttle, new coil packs, new spark plugs, new MAS, New breather tube, and it is still kicking the CEL. Now saying misfire and lean on Bank 2. I'm about bonkers on why? I need help!

Check Battery condition, Then if codes still persist consider an intake manifold leak (Quite unlikely) or Your new coil packs are pattern parts rather than Denso originals and the car is quite fussy on coil packs. Also check engine to body earth strap. Obviously its quite hard to remotely diagnose these things, Good luck my friend 🤞

Very encouraged that this is clearly doable so its on my wish list, but look forward to seeing how the bottom ones go. Hopefully a once only job but is there a reason you didn't use any copper grease?

Are you sure they are dry bearings John ? I'm genuinely interested on this topic. also its a shame you did not adjust your castor , considering the mods you have done already adjusting the castor to improve handing and feedback will make a great video perhaps you can do that on another video.

Does it help any to put the weight of the car on the spindle or the stub axle before torquing the rubber bushings so as to not “twist” the rubber? This is done on some other cars, isn’t it?

Hi Thomas. Good comment. It does not make any difference in this case as the top bushes are effectively bearings, and the wishbone rotates freely around them (if not corroded). However a lot of cars have far less sofisticated bushes (typically refered to as Void Bushes) which do indeed need to see the cars full weight before tigtening their bolts in order to minimise the strain and tearing they see in service.

Hey John my gas gauge is not working correctly. When I fill up my car it will read correctly but then after a few minutes it goes to empty when I really have a full tank of gas. It’s a 1999 XK8 with 77,000 miles. I think it’s a sensor can you help me!

Sounds like the float is leaking and will need replacing. The only other possibilities that i can imagine are that the connection to the sensor is faulty or you have a doggy earth connection to the sensor. However i have not experienced the problem personally. HAS ANYONE ELSE GOT ADVISE FOR @lynpinto

I have done them in 'Dark Silver' but powder coat is available in hundreds of colours. Black would have been more sensible but i just fancied something that would show up how slender the arms are.
