Setting a crane up to use two winches during a pick - Why does a crane have two hooks

In this video, we are setting the crane up to use both winches for a pick. We used both winches in order to stand a piece up that was shipped in horizontally. This is commonly referred to as "tailing" the piece with the auxiliary winch.

I've watched over 50 of your videos over the past year or so, and I'm going back to see if I missed any of the older ones. This is one I missed, and it's excellent - I think getting the crane set up is way more interesting than the lift itself many times, and your more recent videos seem to go from arriving on the site to having everything set up ready to lift; a little more on the prep work would be interesting, at least to me. I enjoy your stuff. Thanks.

Backing up the dolly deserved Benny Hill music. =) When you were first talking about it being articulated and like backing up a 4 wheel trailer/wagon, I'm thinking that isn't all that hard. Then in the video from your mirror I noticed the multi wheel steering and thought OH ! CRAP ! Between that and the fact that both crane and dolly are slightly [cough] longer than typical vehicles ... ... Yeah. Not jealous at all. Looks to me like you made it seem easy, all things considered.

I was on a job where we used old farm wagons to haul our footing forms from the boneyard to the job site. We used a three wheel cushman truckster to pull them with, when we had to back those bastards it was a circus as well, jackknifed constantly. There was one older guy that grew up on a farm, he could back those things anywhere he wanted.

Nice backing up music:-) always wonder could you possibly build some sort of quick attach brace or some thing that would lock the boom dolly from articulating ?
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 5 жыл бұрын
David Rigoni, it has a locking pin to keep it from articulating. However, I can't engage it with the boom on the dolly and backing around a corner. The boom and the pintle hitch pivot in different places. If I locked the dolly and tried to back around a corner, it would bind up. So, I can only lock the pin when backing in a straight line or with the boom over the front of the carrier. Many thanks for watching! 🙂👍

Been wondering about the second winch for a while, great! And I can't imagine the struggle since I can't even back up a tiny U Haul. I need practice I guess. On the maximum rope pull, I've heard that it decreases as the number of winds on the drum decreases and vice versa. Wrap a string around your finger once or 20 times type stuff. Is it any kind of a factor that's ever considered?
@ToTheTopCrane

hmmmmm..... I am thinking that the force increases as the drum gets smaller ? Its the same as a fishing reel....when reel is full, one gets more line travel with a given number of cranks, but less torgue....., but when reel is half empty, one gets less line speed, but more power. (torgue)

I can't back a 4 wheel wagon to save my life, Jimmy you look like a Mensa candidate compared to the fool I'd have made out of myself trying to back into that spot. And I'd have been cursing a blue streak the whole time. Knowing myself, I'd have gotten so hacked off after a couple minutes of farting around with the dolly I'd have set the doggon crane up and *put* the dolly somewhere out of the way. Anyhow, a quick couple of questions if you don't mind. How many parts of line can you reeve on the jib? And can you do what the big off-shore construction cranes do and use both winches simultaneously to increase your pick capacity?
@ToTheTopCrane

Sandy, I can reeve I think 7 parts of line off of the 17 foot long jib, and one part off of the 43 foot and longer jib.
