(Lyrics):
[Verse 1: David Paich]
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
"Hurry, boy, it's waiting there for you"
[Chorus: Bobby Kimball]
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (Ooh)
[Verse 2: David Paich]
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside
Frightened of this thing that I've become
[Chorus: Bobby Kimball]
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
[Bridge: Both]
Hurry, boy, she's waiting there for you
[Chorus: Bobby Kimball]
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa (I bless the rains)
I bless the rains down in Africa (I bless the rains)
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa (Gonna take the time)
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

It’s worse than that. The rest of the band didn’t like the song, they didn’t understand the lyrics. Paich considered dropping the song from the album and save it for a solo project that would come some time later. But perhaps an angel suddenly passed through the studio and had the band eventually cut the song. The rest is history as they say 😊

Few songs are as soothingly healing & relaxing in all that they evoke, for such peacefully contemplative reflection overtakes me every time I hear it, it lifts me up & beyond all while taking me to places & realms that my eyes have never seen, making me feel far more alive & vibrant & spiritual. More human. This masterpiece, in all its glorious timelessness, has that beautifully transcendent effect upon me, helping to purify my soul as most of my worries fade away. What sublime exaltation, what magically endearing serenity, what mesmerized wonder, what loving detachment from the madness of it all, what mystically sweet sensations have flooded all throughout my essence, what wonderfully primitive sensibilities burst from deep within, what freedom of thought & moving around to foreign landscapes to explore & marvel at, what rapture. This song! Amazing!
