That shuffle beat from Jeff Porcaro was so iconic before the first musical note was played. Love watching masters of their instruments playing together.

💖💖💖 More Toto to react to "Africa", "Hold The Line", "99", "I Won't Hold You Back" and "Stop Loving You".

To be honest, I never heard of the term, yacht rock before I started watching KZfaq reactions, and I definitely take it as diss. As for Toto, they were formed from some of the best session musicians around. Jeff Porcaro has played with the biggest names in music, Steve Lukather, on guitar, has played on over 1500 albums. The band is one of the best. So glad you liked this song!

The fact that a bunch of wealthy yacht owners have great musical taste shouldn't be considered a negative. A majority of the most talented musicians of the 70s and 80s--Supertramp, Loggins and Messina, Hall and Oates, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, Alan Parsons, etc., etc., fall into that category. The term is actually reverse snobbery, used by people who think anything that isn't banging your head against a wall is less than "proper rock music." Didn't know that about Toto. It explains why they were such a tight band with superb musicianship.

Yacht Rock now refers to a genre. SiriusXM has a station called Yacht Rock. So does quite a few others.

Thanks for the info. I didn't mean to imply I thought yacht rock was a bad thing, just that I assumed those who came up with the name did so as a negative connotation, not as a true rock genre. Which it looks as if it now is. I love all those bands and it seems that the term now means top tier artists, impeccable production and stellar performances. Which I'd rather call Super Yacht Rock! @@WMalven

Yacht Rock is not intended as a diss as far as I know. Hall and Oates, for example were considered yacht rock and they were incredible. Daryl Hall has an amazing voice. In fact, he wrote Every Time You go Away and everyone knows the version by Paul Young, although H&O version is killer.@@ShawnSalvadori

The four members that formed the band were highly in-demand studio musicians. They were also the studio band for Steely Dan and Micheal Jackson. Nice reaction Shawn, cheers.

The great Jeff Porcaro on the drums doing that classic shuffle just keeps this song going Jeff’s younger brothers Mike on bass & Steve on the keys I believe this song was partially written about Steve Porcaro girlfriend actress Roseanne Arquette Bobby Kimball on vocals, David Paich on piano and Steve Lukather on guitar Of course it’s all about the drumming from Jeff.

This is a good band to take a deep dive into. This is probably their most played song on the radio. A very good song, but they have a diverse body of work for you to check out. Great instrumentation. Multiple lead singers. Solid late 70s - 80s band. Yacht Rock was initially a derogatory term. Hopelessly romantic/cheesy songs that you listen to with your rich friends, Biff & Buffy. I believe Yacht Rock is more accepted today because people recognize the talented voices (no auto tune) and the variety of instruments used. Love and emotion were openly discussed back then, maybe not so much today.

Toto! The Session group. They decided that they should get together and record their own songs so during down time in the studio, they started recording and to keep their tapes separate they marked them Toto. The name stuck. A couple of members didn't last long and they got another great session drummer that I have seen in other great videos with other people include jazz great Hiromi. I like the 35th anniversary concert.

written about Rossanna Arquette. She dated one of the band members, She also dated Peter Gabriel and he penned IN YOUR EYES for her. Making her the 2nd most written about muse in rock history, behind Patti Boyd (more than 6 chart toppers written about her,, Something, Layla, Wonderful tonight, For you blue, bellbottom blues...)

Toto was a group made up of pro studio session musicians. One of them wrote this and brought it to rehearsal. After a cursory look the score, they recorded their first take. This is the what we are hearing now. Just like the legendary "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", the first run through was printed for ultimate release. Astounding.

Toto's Africa! Being about Rosanna Arquette was just a joke that she went along with. The songs George Harrison and Eric Clapton (and even Keith Richards) wrote about Patti Boyd, now that was for real! Patrick Swayze, as mentioned by others being in this video, was not just an actor, but a dancer. Actually, dancer first as his mother ran a ballet studio. He started dancing when he was 2 years old!

"Toto" is derived from Italian language used in the classics meaning "All", or "Everyone". On sheet music, if you see "toto" it means ; "all play".

I've been around a bit, and remember hearing this when it came out. I have never heard the phrase 'yacht rock'. This was MoR, or AoR at the time. Think 'yacht rock' is a bit of a made-up phrase after the fact. See also 'dream pop'!

THE TERM "YACHT ROCK" IS A NEW INVENTION and totally disrespects bands like Steely Dan, etc. I like the music, NOT the genre's new name (try Boz Scaggs' HARBOR LIGHTS from the Silk Degrees album). Try the entire album Aja from The 'Dan. This was a big hit for TOTO - and the music video was in heavy rotation on MTV. Another band you might want to get to know is Booker T. & The MGs - they were the House band for STAX Records in Memphis and helped define the Memphis Soul sound in the early/mid sixties. Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck' Dunn and Al Jackson, Jr. backed more artists than I can mention - just know half of the group were the core of The Blues Brothers Band (Steve and Donald) - react to TIME IS TIGHT played Live at the Oakland Coliseum Jan. 31, 1970, and another classic, GREEN ONIONS.

Not a damn thing wrong with Yacht rock, but the pathetic reverse snobbery of its critics. Most of the best music of the 70s and 80s falls into that category, from Steely Dan, to Joe Walsh, to The Eagles, to The Cars, etc. The fact that a bunch of baby-boomer, yacht-owning, rich people have excellent taste in music isn't a negative to me.
