Inside MusiCast's Rick Such and Eddy Cabello went inside the Music Mill in Indianapolis for Toto's sound check on July 16, 2007. Our apologies for the occasional sound problems. The SPL from Simon's drums was too much for the on-camera mic. Enjoy!

This was the most memorable concert of my lifetime, and I've attended a lot. Seeing Bobby Kimball back on stage with Toto again was a dream come true. The band was smokin', the audience was fanatical, and the setlist was choice. I never dreamed they'd play Goodbye Eleanor, as well as several other older favortites.

Not only did he record and tour with Judas Priest, he also recorded and toured with the Michael Schenker Group. You really can't regulate Simon's massive musical vocabulary by infusing words like "metal" and "NOT," etc... it's just silly. He could probably do the most astonishing blast-beats for hours on end of he felt like doing the gig...

2007 was a bad year for Toto with Mikey getting ill and Bobby starting to sound like shit. It got to Luke the year after and quit Toto because the band he was once in was literally dead and gone. It just wasn't Toto without Paich or at least one Porcaro. At least they got back together in 2010 with more original members. It was for the right reasons. To raise money for Mikey and because the cats missed each other. They are better than ever now.

Bobby was urneal back in the day. Unfortunately with a lot of singers with his range, in later years theiir voice naturally drops. It is rare, like Sammy Hagar who is almost 68 years old can still friggin wail.

Look, I'm not a metal fan at all. I was trying to politely remind anyone reading this that these opinions of yours are just that: your thoughts and opinions. And just because you possess these opinions and thoughts; doesn't make them so. The next guy could "feel" that Cobham was too "rigid" and Simon ... I'm already trying to teach my child these psychological norms; I don't have the time to teach anyone else. C'mon brother, music is too beautiful to try to trap it with harsh opinions. Peace...

Simon Phillips was NEVER a metal player. A rock player with some fusion chops, yes, but NOT metal. Most of what Simon does is a lot of Billy Cobham beats and fills, which also NOT a Metal player. Think of a slower version of Billy Cobham but playing with a more straight ROCK feel. Sure, I kind of agree that he's not the same feel as Jeff, but he can certain cut the gig.

Psychological norms? There is no such thing. Judas Priest beautiful music? Really? Here's some books you might want to read. It will help you, but your child. First read Power vs Force from Dr. David Hawkins. Then move to the next one in the series. In his books, he talks about music. Power vs Force is VERY interesting, and the others just going into it more in depth, but they are actually quick reads. I highly recommend them.

So what, his best work was more with Stanley Clarke and Jeff Beck before he wasted his time with Judas Priest and Michael Schenker Group, to me those are not going to turn on his early fans. Simon is more of a rock version of Cobham, but at slower tempos. I've seen both in the 70's. Cobham during peak physical condition, which is usually in one's late 20's, 30's, Cobham was untouchable. Simon would copy Billy's beats/fills almost note for note, which is great, but he still was too rigid.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 11 жыл бұрын
No, I don't listen to that sort of metal rock. I've seen Cobham perform with Mahavishnu in 1973, NO ONE could touch him then and since. Mind blowing to say the least. Simon, as good as he is, COMPLETELY copied Cobham's licks and grooves on a bunch of albums. Heck, his setup is even copied from one of Billy's Tama's set ups, since Cobham developed both the Gong Drum, Octabans, left hand lead playing, and inverted China type on the left hand side of the kit.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 11 жыл бұрын
Simon has never been much of a straight ahead jazz player, which is CRITICAL in playing music. Rock has gone from having jazz and blues feel to what is being done now, which removes that Feel from the music, which is why I hate a lot of rock (metal) music of today. They forgot to have FEEL. When I listen to Cobham play, he has FEEL, Simon's is more rigid. Sorry, but Cobham has FAR more musical background than Phillips in music that matters. Rigid rock/metal fucks up one's playing.
