I've been a witness to a loser's doddle in The Telegraph, on Toto's Easter gig at Royal Albert Hall, in London. That guy, calling himself a music critic, wrote nothing about music, just criticised the band's outfits, in a very rude, degrading style. Some members shared it in Toto fangroups on Facebook - and I felt it shouldn't be left without a direct feedback. I spread an open letter all over the fangroups, shared it on my timeline and also sent it in comment to his vomit on The Telegraph. Here it is: "Dear Mr. McCormick, first of all, let us make something clear: it is your own social problem if you do not like Toto, or had an issue with them (or more), or you do not like their clothing style, but it is a basic rule in every profession that a critic of a certain field, should be UP TO THE POINT and CONSTRUCTIVE. I must announce with sadness and disappointment that you have not fulfiled any of the above mentioned criteria. According to your own determination of profession, you are a MUSIC CRITIC. Hence, one would think that you are paid for demonstrating a PROFESSIONAL review. Despite, what can the once-upon-a-time reader see? Almost nothing about music (maximum Steve Lukather's "hysterical" guitar play during While My Guitar Gently Weeps), the ballance engineering, the general atmosphere, the band members' performing skills or their contact with the audience: you keep going on about their dressing style, in a very rude style, what is more, you start with it, and you conclude your so-called review with a very hypocrite sentence. I am not intending to be rude, but to be honest, I am glad that you have not been sent to Marseille where Shem wore a tight cap, in which he looked like Lee Montague as Pietro di Bernardone in Zeffirelli's Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972). In case you have seen the film as well, I do not want to consider how would you have described his outfit, nor how would he have reacted. At any rate, you must focus on points like: 1.) technical circumstances influencing the voice quality, 2.) whether the songs are played in tune, 3.) the band members' performing skills and their influence on the audience. These are the closest to a music critic's task. Concerning the outfits, it is rather suitable for a producer's overview. What you have done above, is like your employer refused you saying you had a hypocrite smile. But let us do not get involved into this particular question. The main thing is that your product is not even suitable as an overview because you keep chewing one rag all the time. Concerning your Twitter feedback on comments, writing "Being trolled by Toto fans" etc., is not worthy to an adult English gentleman. A normal, mature person considers and filters what to accept and what to refuse, and does not judge immediately. What is more, it does not look like you worked a lot with your so-called article. If it was a proper overview, not a one-track doddle, the readers would believe that you have put all your energy into it. Nor even the time for which you have been working as a music critic, saves you, because a properly experienced critic automatically aspires to be concise and humble. Reading my lines above, also think about your colleagues because the success of a press product, depends on every single member of the editorial. If you produce a proper, concise, impartial overview, that will keep the readers faithful and the editorial team satisfied and successful. To sum up, I would like you to practise more empathy, humility and awareness of work. Neither do forget that if I demonstrate the above mentioned queries, it does not mean that others do not think like this. Regards, Julia Orosz (Budapest, Hungary)"

They were the best session players in the world in the 80s, they collaborated with many stars of that time and they are the only band to win 6 grammys in one night. Even so, the industry never valued them as they deserve, perhaps because of their wide variety of styles, but what I have no doubt is that they were and continue to be one of the best bands in the world."

the george harrisons, even with just that one track, namely 'i'd have you anytime', [and maybe a few other songs, to be fair], pretty much keep kickin' everyone's ass, over-and-over-again, it's definitely comical, but also magical, just how good that frickin' guy is on that particular track: the stars must've just align'd just right on that particular day or night in what, like , 1970? forgetaboutit~~ one can never touch that kind of magic, only be inspired by it, i reckon...

only that one guy, from the saga band, of canada, sort of takes that magic and runs-with it, like nobody else can, that guy, i forget his name, but he's probably the best i've heard, man~ i'm thinkin' of that one song called 'framed' on the 1981 album called _worlds apart_ , that thing is arguably the greatest album of that century or even perhaps hundreds of years, largely owing to rupert hine having produced it, apparently, and it seems he played that band like few producers can ever do with any band , instrument or tape machine, man, and they weren't the only ones, but wow, when he was great he was the greatest~ the fixx were also another example of a band rupert got to create with, like no other producer ever could or would~~

Phenomenal musicianship, and just a fucking brilliant rock band. Rolling Stone don't like 'em because they were never hip. Big fucking deal... we're here for music and nothing else. Toto were total class.

Jeff Porcaro fa sempre la cosa giusta al momento giusto come solo i grandi sanno fare, sempre al servizio della musica. Ci mancano tanto questo tipo di Drummer con buona pace dei chip chiops gospel.

So true, and I bought this 2nd Toto album… but watching this video now the mannerisms of Bobby when he sings seems so cringe-worthy… and David Paich (phenomenal talent though he is) always had the most goofy, dorky look on stage. I saw them twice live a long time ago now, but these days I'd rather just listen to their amazing recorded works without the visuals.

I absolutely LOVE Toto. Don't care what critics say, or if this is formula rock, corporate jingles, or any genre. I absolutely LOVE Toto. Especially the original line-up of DAVID PAICH - a great songwriter. The majority of the material comes from his pen. BOBBY KIMBALL - in my Top Ten favourite singers without question. STEVE LUKATHER - Um, one of the greatest guitarists I ever heard, and a great singing voice. DAVID HUNGATE - so underrated as a rhythm provider it's sad! STEVE PORCARO - kind of like a mystical wizard in the background, making magic happen. JEFF PORCARO - the kind of drummer anyone would want. Even in this song he makes gravity sound like a rhythm pattern, as he falls back into the song's main drum groove. Every time he makes that snare hit FALL into the rhythm. Its descent becomes a rhythm in itself. Phenomenal drummer. RIP This band taught me TONS of things about music. TONS. As good as any teacher or tutor you could find. You just have to listen. They teach you about composition, arrangement, theory and PRACTICE. So critics and genre pigeonholers can say all they like. I know this band taught me TONS, and I owe them a debt for any skills I may possess of my own. They helped me grow as a musician and songwriter. I owe them a debt. Not the other way around.

Toto is so underrated compared to the pedestal given other 80s bands. So much 80s talent it probably boiled down to marketing agents? On who marketed who in the most best possibly manner?
