Touch and go: surfer rescued in heavy seas

Our volunteers at Trearddur Bay were recently involved in one of their most challenging rescues when a surfer got into trouble in heavy seas and strong winds, and was in danger of being smashed against the rocks.
But even after they'd got the surfer aboard their Atlantic 85 lifeboat, they still had to get back to dry land. As a normal recovery onto the trailer was not possible, they had to perform a net recovery, which involves driving the boat into the trailer on the back of a wave which is then ‘captured’ by a collapsing net.
The rescue tested the lifeboat and shore crew's training and equipment, including their launch tractor, to the limit.
Helmsman Lee Duncan said: 'The conditions were treacherous with a strong south westerly blowing in excess of 50mph. We had pretty much our most experienced crew on board - three helms and the lifeboat training officer - and I think in my twenty years on the crew at Trearddur Bay that was possibly the most touch and go shout I have been on.’

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Great example to show how vital the launch and recovery system is in these conditions. Calmly sitting in wait with waves crashing over the cab. It must be a relief for the crew when they are safely being towed in.

I passed by Treaddur Bay (where this happened) about 3hrs before the shout. Sea conditions were immense and not somewhere I’d want to be in any boat! Excellent work carried out by brave volunteers!

As a surfer it is important to know your limits. Look at the period and height and determine that way how much energy is in the water. But also consider wind - my rule is to not surf if onshore wind is more than 28 mph and gust 33 mph. I just found that at that point the ocean is too "washing machine" and it isn't even worth the surf.

Well you're a poor excuse for a diver, with that comment. If you are a diver, that is. You clearly don't value life and cannot think things through: the sea is a terrifying place, it takes lives mercilessly and our RNLI cannot consider a person's circumstances when they get a 'shout'. It's simple - person(s) in danger = rescue. Have a lot more respect for our RNLI and keep politics out of it, 'buddy'.

The RNLI's role is "the saving of lives at sea", NOT "the saving of SELECTED lives at sea".

It doesn't matter who the people are, the RNLI have a professional and moral duty to save the lives of anyone that needs saving. It is their job to save lives at sea, it is Immigration's job to figure out what to do with undocumented immigrants. Open your heart, those undocumented immigrants are people too. All human lives are equally valuable and deserving of saving when in danger. Also, how are they supposed to know the immigration status of anyone they rescue? Do they check everyone's passports before throwing a rescue line? When people are in trouble on the water the RNLI saves them, it's that simple.

Exactly! Our mission is to save lives at sea so we will always help those in trouble in the water - no matter who they are or where they come from. Our lifeboat crews do not judge those they are called on to rescue, their status, their motives for being on the water, or what brought them into danger.
