During this show season I was attached to VT-4, the advanced jet training squadron at NAS Pensacola and received my Wings of Gold as a Naval Aviator in August. We shared the same hangar with the Blues and our Ready Rooms were next door to each other. After getting my wings I went on to fly the A-7E Corsair with a fleet squadron, VA-83, and deployed on the USS Saratoga CV-60. I got to transition to the F/A-18 Hornet and rejoined my squadron now designated as VFA-83. My years serving in the Navy were some of the best flying anyone could ever imagine, and flying the Hornet was a dream come true!!

Sadly, "lead" soloist Lt. Caputi (No. 5) and "opposing" soloist Lt. Cmdr. Gershon collided shortly after this was filmed during a performance in New York in 07/1985. Caputi survived, but Gershon did not. Of course, Reeve experienced his own tragedy ten years later.

Very true. Lt. Cmdr Gershon's last full airshow weekend was at Moffett Field in 1985. RIP Lt. Cmdr. Gershon.

I'm very frustrated because this video cuts out right at the end of the credits but there appeared a memorial tribute after the credits as I recall. You can BARELY see the screen starting to appear at the last second of this video. I'm trying to find out if the tribute was for Mike Gershon.

I watched this growing up all the time too! One of my favorites. If you haven't seen it, get yourself a copy of Threshold, The Blue Angels Experience. It features the Blues in F4 Phantoms and has amazing in cockpit shots.
