If you have been stretching your hamstrings a lot, but you haven't made much improvement and still are struggling to touch your toes, you're probably doing wrong stretching.
By the end of this video you will improve your range of motion, and might even be able to touch your toes! In this video I will explain a very common mistake when people stretch their hamstrings, and how to retrain your body and movement to improve your range of motion much more effectively and efficiently.
"About me": 0:24
Actual topic starts at: 1:03
*This is really about retraining movement pattern and improving functions rather than stretching hamstrings. The best way to improve your hamstrings flexibility and functions is to incorporate this movement pattern into your daily activities such as putting on shoes/socks, picking something up from the floor so that you'll be lengthening hamstrings more throughout the day. Once you start to integrate this bending pattern, you'll be lengthening hamstrings a lot more than just doing hamstring stretches several times/day. Remember, this is about retraining movement pattern and improving functions!
The Comprehensive online movement course "Understanding How YOUR BODY Moves Method™" (a self-paced program with group coaching and mentoring via my private Facebook group community. This is for people who are feeling overwhelmed and confused about their body, what their body needs, and what optimal movements are for their body. If you're interested in learning more, please email me from my website, and we'll set up a zoom interview.

Movement is vital to your health. Improving your movement therefore means improving your health and life. 3 key things are: 1) Daily movement practice to improve movement quality (MOVE WELL) 2) Incorporate good movement into daily activities (MOVE WELL AND MORE) 3) Awareness and mindfulness of your movement and lifestyle (MINDFUL MOVEMENT)

One can get any flexible just by gaining enough strength in that range of motion, if you don't have enough strength brain doesn't permit motion .

@@WizAtTheYellowBrickRoad Wow we have a cool guy here. Are you getting charged anything by him? You know, you have a body too, why don't you get off your chair and try it yourself? Of course your mileage may vary. Myself, I'm young and thin enough that with some tips correcting how to bend, it worked for me. Does it mean my hamstring flexibility is all of a sudden fixed? Nope, still tight as heck. But at the time I was ecstatic enough to comment about at least finding this easy way to achieve my small goal of touching my toes. Last time I checked expression of opinion and experience, especially to validate information, isn't illegal. Peace.

I was very flexible as a child and could put my head between my knees, keeping them straight. My grandmother always told me to keep working on that my whole life because the older you get the stiffer you will get because most people don’t work on that when they get older. I’m now in my 70s and can still put my head between my knees. I practice this almost daily, even though I’ve allowed myself to get somewhat out of shape. But flexibility will keep you moving.

Hi, Taro! I'm new to your videos. I am a retired physiotherapist. I'm thrilled with your practice and instruction - it incorporates many techniques that I learned in school; however, many more that I learned anecdotally during 30 years of practice. We were always encouraged as students to "play" with treatment techniques with a goal of being less prescriptive and more effective for diverse populations. Thank you for your help in empowering people to help themselves. I'm going to share this with a colleague of mine and her son who is now studying physiotherapy.

This is amazing, for years I have been told to stretch my hamstrings to improve flexibility resulted in hyper mobility in my knees and still couldn't touch my toes but resulted in injury and reduced my running competition times and adversely effected my technique! Took longer to recover so stopped stretching my hamstrings. I have had coaches, teachers and physiotherapist all tell me I had to do this and that stretch nothing happened or reproved, by back ground is in science and biomechanics and all questioned the logic of the hamstrings argument as the issue, and said was poor movement some how. I tried this and can touch my toes! I am 6ft 4 tall with 36inch inside leg and this worked. So thank you very much for this video. This is perhaps the longest comment I have ever left on KZfaq but had to express my thanks. So thank you again and have an outstanding day.

this is brilliant! i noticed that my legs seemed to get so 'tight' or i thought they had since my knee injury. this was so easy to do. i think that when we have an accident we become afraid to move - like it's a protection thing - but it gets in the way of healing.

Very good video indeed! As an MD, I have this comment, if I may: what is wrong with Yoga is that many teachers teach forward bends, both standing and seated, with no respect to the mechanics. I find two things very important: 1. The practitioner MUST do a good WARM-UP of the lower extremities first. 2. For standing forward bends, the KNEES MUST BE BENT to the extent required by each individual. 3. And as you absolutely correctly said, the bend should come from the pelvis. Otherwise, the lumbar discs would be subjected to enormous strain/pressure which is a very bad thing. It could easily lead to disc herniation even. Thank you for this video!

As soon as the knees are bent there is almost no stretch of the hamstrings. Why not keep the legs straight and reach forward with the pelvis, keeping the spine straight and shoulder blades back and together? Then reach forward to a comfortable degree. I don’t think that should cause any problems.

daaaamn, my mind is blown tbh. It appears so simple, but that makes a LOT of sense! Just found your channel because a video got recommended to me and I couldn't be happier. Really awesome and good way of showing exercises and in addition even a understandable and good explanation as to why/how. Just brilliant, thanks for theses videos!

My pleasure! This quick change is not very surprising as the nervous system can change movement patterns quickly once it recognizes them.

👍You rock! This did instantly help me. The second part of the instruction helped me the most. After doing the exercise I improved by a few inches. But when you explained how we normally bend over with the inefficient movement, I was aware of how I was bending and adjusted to moving the pelvis instead of rounding my back. Instantly better. Keep up the great work.

I used to be in gymnastics as a kid and was able to touch the ground easily. I am now 50 and have been doing yoga lately and trying to get my hamstrings to cooperate. Cat/Cow is part of my daily routine so incorporating this into bending made a world of difference. My first time trying this method I was able to not just touch my toes but put my palms on the ground. Great lesson.

Soooo helpful! I did not even realize I could not touch the floor anymore until I did the ROM ex! I could always put my palms on the floor, don't know when this changed! This is excellent work and your explanation of retraining the nervous system was so clear and useful!

I was a little sceptical but threw a coin on the floor to test this method. On the first attempt l could not touch the coin without bending a knee. After following the instructions during one play of this video picking the coin up with either hand was effortless. I am retired and had presumed I was seizing up with age. Gaining 6inches (l50mm) of reach so quickly has left me stunned.

@@TaroIwamoto Hi Taro. Deeply appreciate your knowledge and teachings. Am a massage therapist/bodywork professional since 1989 (craniosacral, lymph drainage, gentle visceral work, myofascial release techniques). You are providing the public with much needed teachings that are long overdo. Have experienced Feldenkrais with individual sessions and classes. A remarkably elegant and simple movement re-education/training for the nervous system and entire mind/body. While Nature is complex, her solutions for healing are often quite simple to carry out when properly understood and applied. Please keep up your excellent work! Wishing you good health and continued success.

Thank you Sir I have been on a slow path to recover my health. 290 to 245, another 45 to go. One thing that has been lacking is improving my movement. I can touch the floor for first time in decades. Just fingertips how, but I'm sure that will improve as the belly is flatten. This is going into my dailies for sure.
