You’re doorway method is honestly the best method that has changed my training with my dogs leash pulling. I do it with almost every single threshold throughout the day. I even stop randomly in the middle of the street and change directions and keep the dogs guessing. Great info as always!

Agree with this 100%! My biggest issue at the moment is friends/family that think my rules are silly. We meet tons of dogs daily and play with our friends almost daily. With me she is never reactive or aggressive, same with my regular dog walker. But the minute my Uncle takes her for a walk or has her for a weekend - she turns into different dog. I am grateful for the help but he thinks my rules are silly and “oh it’s cute when she is feisty” and “it is stupid you don’t want to use a retractable leash.” He means well but tends to think that if something works for his friend’s 18 year old tiny dog, that is is what I should do for my highly energetic 10 month old hound/shepherd/chow chow mix. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
@pittymama4500
@pittymama4500 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if you've ever checked out Ivan balabanov channel but he made a very good point one time about retractable leashes and the fact that everybody talks crap about the people that use them. But, if you have already done necessary groundwork for your dog to be leash trained and they understand Leach pressure and what it means, then it can be very beneficial for your walk to use a retractable lead. I'm not saying to use one on a dog that still is having problematic behaviors and learning but when you have a really good dog that hasn't done anything to prove his unworthiness then why not give him the freedom. Go ahead let him mess up because in order for you to correct the mistakes you have to see them!

I agree with you 💯 about a dog being a good citizen in any situation. Owners just don’t realize it doesn’t matter where you are with your pet but respectful is where it is at. Although I did almost get annoyed with the lady complaining about my dog in the dogs permitted mail area today, Cleo was in a perfect down stay, Cleo did not even register this lady, completely ignored this lady. Beautiful dogs 🤍🐾 One of the most precious informations I learned from you is that we’re totally allowed to intervene and correct a behavior while the dogs “play”. Many owners think it’s best to let them sort it out between them and belittle the person who wants to interrupt the “high energy”, which always felt totally unfair to me, seeing my dog being chased and stalked by a dominant dog who would want to hump my dog for example. Then when mine finally would have enough and growl, people would think mine was the trouble maker lol. Long story short, your methods are gold and life changers!!

When my GS x matured, she started chasing all doggy friends instead of playing with them. One of them still leaves his owner and heads for own at the mere sight of her! Most owners always claimed they were just having fun, making me out to be the baddy. One guy purposely seeks out other dog owners for his dog to romp with and she is often a long distance away from him. He's lucky she hasn't run into an aggressive dog and been injured.

Dog parks are for some dogs and they're not for some dogs and people just don't understand how to make that choice based upon the dog that they have in front of them. I personally have powerful dogs and I have to understand that if I take my dogs to a dog part then I have to be diligent and interrupt any bad behavior because my dogs are going to be the one hurting another dog and always are going to be the dog blamed for any type of issue. Therefore in my opinion these are the dogs that should not be put into this situation to fail. My friendliest dog meets lots of dogs and he's a very good helper dog who has a really cool way of calming dogs with high anxiety levels. He has a whole load of friends that he visits on our daily walks some of which were super reactive and territorial at their fence line and he worked his magic with them and eventually became their best friends. But I don't think just because I have a good dog(intact btw) that we need to go to a dog park! Lol

The reason why I think you are the best trainer around, is because you demonstrate how your reaction to certain dog behaviors differ with each dog. I love what you said @6:32. You felt that this particular dog needed to be petted instead of just verbal encouragement. That kind of subtle difference in reinforcement tells me that I should really pay attention to the type of dog I have (Red Cattle/Pit Bull) and what his particular needs are. Discipline, Guidance and Love are what a dog needs and I learned it from you and greatly appreciate it.

“The best way for a dog to meet another dog is in a field with the owners 30ft away, but it’s also the most dangerous” well said and although might sound confusing he’s 100% right. In 90% of cases that is, but the unsocialized dogs or abused/dogs with aggression are the other 10% that makes it dangerous sometimes.

These videos are so helpful to me. I live with two dogs, the younger one came as a puppy, just before covid, and his socialisation stopped before he was four months old. In spite of this he is a good boy, wants to please, but then I became disabled and the poor lad ended up with a very restricted lifestyle. He is now 3 1/2 years old, a big, unneutered American Akita and you might think that he is dreadful, with no fault of his own, but he isn't. My own health is improving, and even when I was nearly bed bound, we still kept up with training in the house. He does have things he needs to learn which he should know at his age, and these behaviours are pretty well addressed in your videos. He is enjoying life a lot more, and I am less worried about seeing another dog when we are out together. Some I will turn and walk the other way, it isn't always worth the stress, but with others we will keep on our path; it's fairly isolated where I live and I don't always have the energy to walk a longer route home. I know that he is trying to do the right thing because when a (friendly) dog which I hasn't seen came running up behind me, he lunged at it and I ended up falling. Instead of chasing the other dog down, Bruno stood across me and just looked at the young labrador, who turned tail and fled. He has no friends, though I have hopes as a few local people don't realise he is supposed to be scary, so don't run away with their pups when they see us, I think we will be walking with other dogs soon. Thank you for your videos.

Joel has a great video on the 3 second rule. Victoria Stilwell also has a great video of a JRT that wants to kill the new black Lab pup. From my experience of having my own rescue group, dog control officer, humane educator, shelter manager, obedience instructor, as well as 7 dogs at once years ago. Everything happens first with the first dog in the house. They get petted first, leash put on first, fed first, etc, then the newcomer. Don't leave them alone until you're absolutely sure they can be trusted. The pup will be in a crate or baby gated off until housebroken. Try not to use people names or dog names as it tends to create jealousy. If you have to break anything up, it's a general knock it off or that's enough pronounced E-nuff. Good things happen when they're together. Just saw a video of a pit and a terrier out this week of Victoria Stilwell's. The Pit was jumping baby gates even. Hope that helps.

He does great with dogs smaller than him (even lets small dogs correct his bad behaviors), but almost any dog that is his size and bigger he flips out on. I bought him a gentle leader a few months ago and now he can pass bigger dogs on a leash wonderfully. I highly recommend it! I recently tried your doorway method and I am impressed. It solved his leash reactivity very quickly! But whenever he meets a big dog, he attacks it almost right away. I like his temperament as it is, he's fine with any animal and kids, cautious with random strangers, protective at the house and only issues i have is when I'm walking him with my youngest son and a guy walks too close behind us, he really doesn't like that and refuses to move and growls until they walk past. Essentially alot of things I see you do, can be seen in packs of dogs. It's natural dog behaviour, their will be an alpha and yes others may challenge at times, but it works on a concept of each dog knowing their role in the pack. Some people just unfortunately don't understand the need for this and that dogs will be much happier knowing what is expected of them. Its essentially training a dog to instinctively understand what is expected.

Iv just come across your channel, and I think it is absolutely brilliant, I used to have an alano espanol, which I essentially worked on the same principle as he was such a dominant dog. The other people I lived with didn't do the same so when I had to travel for work etc they had problems as he essentially took over the house. I'm actually picking up a cane corso puppy today. They have already warned us that he is the most dominant of the litter. So we are looking at similar techniques, we also have a dog trainer who has already mentioned that dominance could be a problem so it's important to establish it from the start. As you have said in other videos. Dominance problems and aggression are two very different things. We also have someone who visits often with a malamute who does have problems which have only developed since another dog attacked him, so he has became quite problematic until other dogs submit to him. We are just going to take precautions and take time during introducing them. But I know it won't be a problem in the long run.

I have a question. I'm legally blind. I can feel my dog get tense when he sees other people, dogs, and bicycles on walks. He does lunge. He has jumped and tried to bite when people want to pet him (I don't allow people to pet him on walks anymore. 1/100 times is still too many times for me to feel safe.) Currently what I do is generally give him free reign to piss and sniff wherever but when he sees a person with or without a dog, we step to the side, sit, iron grip his harness (he broke the d ring on his collar yesterday in the backyard) and we let them pass. He gets it. He waits, they walk, if he's good he gets a treat. Cool. My question is what can I do about bicycles because they zip by so damn fast and he shoots off so damn fast that all I have is instinct to keep him from knocking them over. Do I tight leash him? Do I harshly hold him down by the harness and sternly reprimand (thus showing him that behavior is NOT ok?) Do I buy a gentle leader and hope I don't snap his neck? I don't want to have to do any of this. I want to walk him collar and leash and let him be as free as possible but he's shown there are some people and dogs he does not trust so measures must be taken. I really REALLY don't want to have to swat him like my roommates say I should because I'm legally blind, like I said, and I don't have depth perception.

I have an 8 y/o golden, well trained and socialized. When we head to the dog park, all he wants to do is chase the ball, he doesn't even look at other dogs. If him and another dog are chasing the same ball, he will let them have it. He's very easy going and chill. He often gets humped and he generally has no reaction to this, it bothers me but doesn't seem to bother him. Is there anything I can/should do to change this? It's especially annoying when the other dog owner doesn't stop their dog from humping. I don't want an aggressive dog but I also don't want him to be humped.

I’ve been training (and being trained to train) a beautiful 2+yo Cane Corso. Her human mama has cancer and Cane wasn’t getting enough attention so she asked me to help her. Cane is super smart on close leash but needs to learn the doorway trick and how to come from far away when I am running her. She needs to run. Any tips are welcome. Would you suggest a gentle leader for her breed? She also heals too far ahead so gentle leader could fix that. She also still jumps on people when she’s excited so I hold her tight leashed when someone is approaching us. Thank you!

Hi Joel, I love your dog content. I am interested however in your marine mammal experience. I have been lucky enough to be offered a marine mammal internship at New England Aquarium, which I have happily accepted. I was wondering if you had any tips for me on how to get the most out of the experience. I will be working with California sea lions, Harbor seals and a northern furred seal.

Halters are really a stop or block not a pull, to get the horse to turn you use your body, to get them to go forward you dont pull on their face bc thats rude, you push or tap their sides. if they put their face in your space you put up a hand to block, you dont even need to touch them they get it.Horses will drag you if they want to go and dont respect you instead of pulling uselessly on their faces you force them to go around you even faster than they want to bc passing you is them trying to show their dominance.

But when i have them both on short leash (long leash is better) they build up a undesirable dynamic when meeting not nice dogs, nothing bad (yet) but I want to solve it before it develops into something bad. The younger is unsure, what causes the troubles, I know I have to expose her to more stuff in safe environments though.

my mudi is not reactive to dogs outside, rather curious & sometimes pushy (loose leash walking & meeting dogs on leash in progress, goes kinda well), doesn't care about dogs inside their own yards, BUT from inside our own yard he is fence reactive. + there is this one GSD a few houses further that they are like biggest enemies :/ gsd comes, he barks, we go along the gsd's fence, they both go crazy, & not even with gentle leader on mattered in THIS very exact situation with this exact dog, my mudi would rather break its neck to go bark at the fence, than feel a correction.. (I conditioned him & walked fine with it othervise..)... I am thinking, sould we just let them "bark it out" at the fence once??? The owner of that gsd is not really a partner in getting the two dogs along, not strong enogh to handle his either.. but the dog seem otherwise playful; mine is friendly & knows a bunch of other dogs & knows how he supposed to behave with each one.. But this is the closest living dog & would be nice if they were atleast ok with eachother, how could that be solved? 😩

So I have a dobie, about a year and half old I think. He's kind of a rescue. I was told about him through friends who knew I was good with training dogs and that I had just rescued a Belgium/Dutch shepherd that has turned out pretty good. I am not a dog trainer, just know how to raise dogs, I've had wolf hybrids and rotts but raised all them from puppies. Not dogs that have had a cycle of some kind of abuse. I have been trying your method with some success. My dogs are trained to sit at the door wand wait till I go out so they don't bolt. But I have been working the leaving method while on walks and have had some limited success. However, if another dog is anywhere in the vicinity all that goes out the window. I basically have to put to ground to get him to relax. I would like to be able to goto a trainer but am lacking funds right now. Is there any tips you could give me to try. By the way, treats don;t work, same with praising.

Get them to sit at the top of the stairs and wait?
@steamer2k319
@steamer2k319 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Agree with @@AndyJarman . Start as far away from the stairs as you can, up to about 10 feet. Indicate that you'll be heading to the stairs but don't do so immediately. Issue corrections when they run ahead instead of watching from behind. If the attic room is terribly small (just enough room to not fall down the stairs when you get out of bed?), you may need to find some other venue for training/practice. Maybe use the gate at the dog park. Or if there's a hallway and door on the ground floor of the apartment building, maybe you can find a partner to create some excitement/stimulation/enticement by opening the door while you're still heading towards it.

Check out Joel's Rottweiler named Creed video for the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity. Instructor Carol from McCann also has a great video of a field Spaniel named Cheerio. You practice in a room first, with an empty dish on the other side of the room. Just keep doing 180 degree turns until you can get to the dish on a loose leash. Then add distractions or several good treats to the dish and start again. The dish represents anything the dog wants. Hope that helps.

I've gotta say flying out the door and to another dog isn't really the same(and he REALLY likes going out): I've got mine to stay put anywhere on the porch or inside with the door open and me walking away but as soon as he sees a dog he's gone. Happens even when he's in the back seat, I open my door to get out of the car and he sees something? He jumps to the front and gets out to go and meet the dog. We meet his best friend on a walk? He starts pulling as if he was a pit on crack.

That's why you should add more time in your schedule to correct that behavior in all scenarios where your dog does impulse runs. You should have that dog checking in with you and only allowed to run when you give the okay and even then, you should have 100% retrieval in your command. Make the time. "We can do this all day" is one of the most important lessons a dog needs to learn...i.e. until he does what he's being trained to do, we don't do anything else.

Is it possible to have two types of leash behavior? One for out on walks and in public, the proper at you side with the dog following not leading walk. But also a walk that they can explore and sniff at things. My yard doesn’t have a fence and to let my dog out for the bathroom they need to be on leash. I feel like having my dog doing the tight by my side walk during that time wouldn’t encourage her to relieve herself.

We have a 90 lb pit and I can't walk him because I'm only 110 lbs and he's a solid beefcake, but I would never dream of using a harness on any dog. Never seen someone have control over a dog on a harness because there is no control.

Also, check out Joel's walking tutorial from years ago and the Rottweiler named Creed - great! Sometimes you have to let them run for 5 minutes in the back yard before it's time a walk.
