Toughfan 12 VS A12x25 is the copy as good as the ORIGINAL?

There is no way you can convince me that Thermaltake didnt just copy the A12x25, with some slight modifications. The most stark one being the black and grey color scheme, we have been asking for a Chromax A12x25 for years, we just didnt know Thermaltake was going to be the one to make it for us.
Is the copy as good as the original, well today we take a shot a finding out.

I like the static pressure test idea, It would be cool to see it incorporated in the fan showdown. A test rig with a flap that has a pointer and a number scale would be fairly easy to construct. Great content! Keep it coming.

it can be mirror surface on a flap and laser above the fan. Red dot will show you fan power on the table.

@@arsmol yes, with just a bit of code, a metallic coated paper, a laser pointer and a stepper motor with spindle combined could give you a lot of information on what the fans are doing.

To be fair though, mounting the fan on the top of a u-shaped, water-filled tube isn't much more difficult to construct, and it will immediatly give you a measurement in the right units (mm H2O).

@PC_Modder I don't realize that at all, rather I'm sure it would measure only the static pressure, as the airflow through the fan will come to a stop once the pressure within the tube reaches the maximum static pressure that the fan can generate.

Noctua: 0.14A Thermaltake: 0.7A Power consumption seems to be one key difference.

Rated power consumption isn't really comparable between brands. Some of them write the maximum locked-rotor current, some of them write the typical 100% speed current, etc. That's why current ratings can be weirdly high on Coolermaster fans, for example

Another thing - on pccasegear.com, the Toughfan is apparently rated for 0.12A, I'm not sure if that figure is correct or not

The real key difference is a flaw in the design of the thermaltake fan: It has a round casing, with open gaps, that will lose efficiency on radiators and you can't even mount rubber gaskets on them, because they don't have a square contact frame. See the Corsair QL120: Same cooling on radiators at 1500rpm as an Arctic P12 at 800rpm I'm really baffled by Thermaltake dumb design mistake, considering they point their market towards watercooling!

One real reason to stick with the Noctua is reliability. The A12x25 has a 6 year warranty, the Toughfan only 2 years. And the Noctua also comes with a bunch of useful accessories.

I legitimately do not care even in the slightest about a warranty on a $20 part. I would literally rather just pay $20 rather than deal with the RMA process and keeping track of receipts. Besides, the warranty is not free. It is factored into the price which is why the Noctua is over 50% more expensive. If Noctua wants to insist on making their products atrociously ugly for decades then I'll gladly just spend my money elsewhere.

I replace fans in commercial equipment (transmitters and CCTV NVRs) as well as home computers, all of which run 24/7 for many years. I have been using Noctua since I found them. I have never replaced a Noctua fan because they last a very long time. For me the beige/brown is a badge of quality. Once I install Noctua fans in something I don't need to repair it again (for heat issues). Usually, for me, endurance outweighs beauty.

That was my thought as well, although I don't have much experience with noctua fans or PC fans in general. Given that the performance is about the same, my guess is that the more expensive one will just last longer.

I have never needed to replace a fan in any computer I have ever built and not once have purchased a Noctua fan. I am also pretty sure most people don't use Noctua, so it stands to reason when you replace fans, they are unlikely going to be Noctua. It's not that Noctua fans are better quality, it's just there are way more none Noctua fans out there. It's a similar thing to how a lot of people like to say how Mac doesn't get viruses, but the simple truth is it does ... it's just so few because why create a virus that only infects a very small percentage of computers? Those who are making them are always going to go for the bigger slice.

@@SilvyReacts if you never replaced fans it means your needs are just low, I as a person valuing silence just bought bunch of "silent" fans from different brands and only A12x25 does well enough, though SW3 would probably be close to that but I skipped the 120mm variant and can't really compare the 135 one to that

You want Endurance, how about a Titanium-Aluminum Alloy fan, or why not a sintered Titanium-Carbide fan, or Boron Nitride fan, The fans would never break, and are more heat resistant than Ice.

The A12 copied the Gentle Typhoon's from Nidec. It was the fan that everyone tried to rip off. It also had the same small blade to frame gap. To this day it still has the highest static pressure even against the A12 at low RPM.

Wow, I'm surprised TT would ever copy another company's design, that's so unlike them. I have Noctua fans that are over 6 years old, all working beautifully. I'd choose Noctua every time without a doubt, I've reused their fans in multiple builds.

Well, noctua got their inspiration from the nidec GT, so there's that. Thermalfake always copies others, but in this case, i won´t take sides. Noctua is on the same level of scumminess.

@@ionutdanielserban9498 Noctua would take the same design and improve greatly upon them, Thermaltake does not, they copy and make them cheaper to undercut the 'original' design, for example they took Caselab designs and make them filmsy and lower quality, they don't have to do much RnD as their aim is not to improve upon it. This is one of the reasons why Caselab got bankrupt, Caselab made the RnD and loss but then Thermaltake takes the profit of the hard work of Caselabs.

I just watched a video about them copying caselabs, and I can’t say I’m surprised. In any market, unless you are able to do something unique which is not easily copied by someone else, the possibility of imitation should always be at the back of your mind. It is immoral to just copy something from another, but unless there are patents on the design, I can’t see much reason to blame the copying company. If you offer the same specifications, for a lower price, consumers would really have to think twice before buying the “original”. As they say “it’s just business”…

my last thermaltake fan didn't last long, and i still have 11 years old noctua fans that run like day one. So, on that note, i will stick with Noctua, because i'm pretty sure that their lifetime will be greater

I feel like the only person crazy enough to actually enjoy the Noctua design. I mean, there is no denying that when you see the beige and brown "That's the good one, no mistake." Now, I also decided to apply vinyl woodgrain to my glasspanel PC case, so I might be against the typical user styling. Even then, when you see a black fan it's easy to mistake it for another one at first glance. When you see a beige and brown fan, you KNOW it's a Noctua. The power of branding, and quality, cannot be beat.

For me, the little bit of better cooling doesn't justify the terrible colors. It's really not THAT important to squeeze out every little bit of cooling as an average consumer. As generally, as long as your fan isn't garbage it will usually work well enough even for your typical overclocks. So why sacrifice on aesthetics if you don't have to? Having a computer with a similar theme is one thing, but for anyone else ... I don't understand it. They also cost way more too, and it's so unneeded. Anyone who brags about having noctua fans is brain dead. Reminds me of the same kind of people who brag about using Apple products.

@@SilvyReacts Noise. Silence is a huge priority, and you get the noctuas and get AIB GPUs with the best cooling/noise. Though Id hate to be buying these fans now, theyve doubled in price. I paid approx $30 AU each for A12x25s back in 2018, they are now $70!! Buying PC parts now is absolutely ridiculous.

@@fredfinks Tons of fans are pretty silent that are not Noctua, and perform fairly well. So I still don't know if I would consider that a justification. I am just going to be frank, the colors are ugly. I would never use a Noctua due to that. Plus, if silence was that much of a priority, a fanless build is entirely doable with liquid cooling. Pretty sure there is even a PSU that is fanless.

I actually found, in person, that the Toughfans remain deeper and darker sounding while the Noctuas droned on at an unpleasant pitch. I did a ton of A/Bing before returning the Noctuas in favor of my Toughfans.

i do not own the noctua one in this showcase but i do have there cut down variante of redux 140mm and i also prefer the tone of the 120mm of thermatake granted not same size not toch noch versu top noch either but i think can't rely go wrong whit either ;) take it for what it is gamer for what it is lol.Only fan did saw push as much air than the thermatake in 120mm was there 135 mm from cryorig big model which not as pleasante sound wise whit 120mm mounting position still quite descent performer though.

But it isn't a copy though, both the Noctua A12X25 and Toughfan 12 are based on the Nidec Servo Gentle Typhoon, released in 2008 www.nidec-servo.com/en/digital/pdf/D1225C.pdf There have been made multiple copies of the design other than Noctua and Thermaltake, for example, the XPG Vento Pro, which was a licensed design, and more recently the Scythe Wonder Snail 120. So no, Thermaltake didn't copy the A12X25, they all take inspiration from the same fan released in 2008, and actually don't even perform any better (see link at bottom), which is pretty sad considering that that was 13 years ago. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h92Wp7l-rLazmX0.html

Who cares if one is plastic A, the other B and other XYZ when at the end it matters is performance-per-price and reliability... I'm not the kind that would pay extra for one made of titanium or carbon or whatever unless it would perform just MILES better than cheaper same fan plastic design...

@@guily6669 Errr, material science is important though. Part of the reason Noctua’s fans make the noise they do is the precision afforded by their proprietary blend that stretches just enough in motion to leave a small gap between fan blade and housing. Having a plastic that doesn’t share that property or isn’t as good could make a difference in longevity for weight or balance on a fan motor. It’s not a guarantee to have an effect but it’s not a guarantee that you should rule it out.

I don't think noctua can sue the competitors with similar design because we already saw it with the gentle typhoon. It was black, by the way, and also made a 5500 rpm version. Don't know if it was the absolute first. You should also try the arctic version of this blade design, it should perform very well on radiators, is cheap and is also black.

Have you used the Arctic P12 120mm fan at all? I have scoured the internet wastes, and there are no fans that come close to the combination of price, static pressure, air flow, acoustics, reliability/warranty, and features. The PWM daisy chain version is still cheaper than most competitors and they even have a double ball bearing version...that beats most prices lol.

@@DrRussian yeah, I agree. But have done it. Very lite dry coat. Best result I got was, no paint, but a thin plastic cowling over the body. Improved performance also.

noctua is an european company and spent years to make the fan, TT is a chinese company who spent a week to copy the fan. Yep, that's ok , support the fraud, when noctua goes bankrupt TT will have nothing to copy anymore and we will have cheap fans from china.

Yeah this is the thing that so many youtubers miss. Knockoff parts are good for those who don't have the budget, but absolutely anyone with the means should buy the original. It will fund more innovation in the long run thus benefiting the consumer. This especially applies when it comes to 3D printer parts, I feel really bad for the smaller companies that have their stuff ripped off and can't do anything about it. Don't advertise or use knockoffs, especially just based off of it not being black. Copyright law as it stands is pretty terrible as it does nothing for small companies and is costly, and actually holds back innovation when a large company holds a patent. It also does nothing to stop Chinese companies.

you dont need a dremel to remove the blades... jebus.. just grab something to support the hub center where the hole is and press down on the blades hard and it comes off. you could put them back on later. i've done it with absolutely Zero damage to the hub. i tend to mess stuff up instead of making it better but surprisingly didn't. upvote this so he reads it.

I´ve seen that fan before on other YT channels. Unfortunatley here, they´re as expensive as the Noctua once, or even more expensive. Also somehow I rly don´t appeciate Thermaltake stealing Noctua's design. So I will most definitley stick to Noctua. Nice testing as usual. Take care, keep it comming.

I can't speak for TT, but my experience with Noctua fans is excellent, I have a fan in my system that's been running for 8 years without any problems. Also, their customer service is the best I've ever encountered. They sent me a mounting kit for my cooler free of charge within days.

I've learned that the TT toughfan is not reliable by any means. I have gone through 4 sets of 120 and 140 all under 30 days and failed. TT was useless for warranty, but it was still under 30 days so back to b Amazon each time. To be hobest, the only reason I refuse to use Noctua fans in my PC is the color sceme and that I fell in love with the Lian Li Unifan concept. Slotting 4 fans together and remaining with just two wires instead of 8 is like a dream for CM. Sure, there are other fans that are daisychainable by wires, but then you still have to deal with more wires.

Back when I was in high school, our drafting class had a desktop cnc mill and we played with making epoxy molds and small plastic parts. One thing that became really obvious is that the color pigments would greatly affect the end part. For example red would setup in 10 min and the part would be very hard almost brittle using the same epoxy but blue dye instead of red would take 3-4 hrs to set and the part would almost be rubbery. I'm sure that it has become less of a problem with modern advancements but I'm sure it still has some affect.

The brown color always made me think of the idea of "race spec", where color doesn't matter much, but function and visibility are important. I always use the beige fans. They work well and an extra $40-50 over an entire build is hardly worth mentioning.

Really Dead Guy ok I didn’t know they took the basic design but they have differences. Blade Material (Vibration) double Ball bearing vs fluid bearing and rubber feet are 3 of the differences i see from those 2. The TT one got fluid bearing, sais it‘s the same material as the noctua one and has rubber feet.. wich every fan should have by now, yes.. I mean: I can’t tell anything that’s different to the noctua one except the color. Nothing is innovated or changed technically or visually to make it a different product. I don’t jump on them, I don’t care. It‘s just my opinion and I would stick to noctua. The legal issues is noctuas business, not mine. But I understand your point nonetheless man.

One reason to pick the noctua is if you have several fans connected to one fan header. TT is a 0.7amp not and the noctua 0.14. Fan headers are usually 1amp, so you could potentially put 7 noctua fans on one header (might be overdoing it abit) But only a single TT fan. Which would also exclude it on a dual fan CPU cooler set-up.

I have the Toughfan 14 in my ITX build and they have been great performance wise. I think that it is valid for Thermaltake to take advantage for a demand in the market a Black A12 version. They saw a potential and went for it. Also, while from afar they might look similar, there are enough differences physically, motor wise and even the formula for the CLP is different. Maybe Noctua can simply learn from this.

I hate copyright infringement and this is a clear example. I bought 4 Noctua fans and the large double cpu cooler in black based on these videos. They are serious quality! Very quiet and reliable. I don't think that just because performance is similar it means that you should go buy a knock off. What happens in a couple generations of this mentality when nothing is getting better?

Noctua's are very slightly heavier. Just enough to feel if you have one in each hand. I think that's because Noctua use a slightly better motor with more gubbins.

One reason to go Noctua is if you value the development work that they put into the fan and want to help fund future development. Sure, we can buy cheap clones of name brand products, but that can turn into a race to the bottom.

I don't think Noctua has any grounds for a legal action here. They took Scythe/Nidec Gentle Typhoon, added a few minor improvements like material (which allowed tighter tolerances) and different bearings. But it is still a Nidec GT clone at heart, it is the exact same bloody design and anyone who says otherwise is bloody delusional fanboy, no pun intended. Now comes TT with their own version of Gentle Typhoon but with their own twist like different frame etc... and somehow Noctua gets his panties in a bunch while Nidec, the company who came up with this design originally, does not give a damn. Yes, maybe it was Noctuas fan that gave them the idea to make their own but it is still just another Gentle Typhoon clone but this time with Thermaltakes twists and adjustments.

Well said. For ordinary temperature sensors in PCs and the like an error of half a degree (combined accuracy and precision) is already pushing it, especially when taking a delta between two independent measurements. Btw you should check the RPMs and power consumption of these fans. Power is not the most interesting but knowing the RPMs tells if the fans are indeed very similar or that one does have inferior blades but makes up for it with RPMs.

Arctic P12 - 10€, hat pwm pass through und den gibt es auch als RGB Variante. In Tests ist der sehr ähnlich zum noctua und kostet deutlich weniger.

Despite the colour scheme of the Nactua one, I'd be more inclined to choose it over the Thermaltake version, purely because Noctua has a better track record of longevity in their products (at least from my experience). So I'd wager the long-term quality would be better on the Noctua, even if the colour of the Thermaltake is more pleasing to the eye.

The color doesn’t concern me as much as that outrageous price, I would 100% get the Thermal Take fans as long as the performance is close. I currently have a bunch of Corsair ML series fans, and have been very happy with their performance.

You should send a Noctua and a Toughfan to Bigclive and have him compare the electronics and the windings. I'd bet the Toughfan cut corners on the wire thickness and the controlling circuitry.

I got 4 of the Toughfan 12s in 2 two-packs (comes to 17 EUR per fan) to replace Arctic's P12 I had. You get a splitter per two-pack and a low-RPM adapter and screws for each fan. I used one on a radiator of Arctic Liquid Freezer II 120, the other 3 as case fans and they performed superbly. Extremely quiet even on higher RPM and they move a lot of air. I understand that Noctua still has better build quality (not by a lot, tho, Toughfans are well built) and quality control, but higher price too and ugly color to boot. I don't regret buying them.

Noctua shouldn't sue them, we asked this for quite a long time for a black version of it. They simply didn't meet the demand, but a different company was able to make the same thing but meet the demand the people wanted. Honestly, it seems like Noctua was just making excuses for not making it the color we wanted.

My Noctua NH-U12A came with a pair of A12x25 ran it for a few weeks couldn't stand the poo brown. I quickly switch them out with a pair of CM MasterFan SF120M. They also have the same style of blade design minus 2 blades and with a ring around them. CM spec claim fan pressure is at 2.40 mmH2O on high settings. I will change them to SF120 ARGB when they come out this year. Love Noctua but IMHO they're behind with the times.

And it isn't even a copy, both the Noctua A12X25 and Toughfan 12 are based on the Nidec Servo Gentle Typhoon, released in 2008 www.nidec-servo.com/en/digital/pdf/D1225C.pdf There have been made multiple copies of the design other than Noctua and Thermaltake, for example, the XPG Vento Pro, which was a licensed design, and more recently the Scythe Wonder Snail 120. Having thought about the static pressure thing a bit I think it could be interesting to test the total airflow using a test rig with two configurations. The rig could be quite simple consisting of a fan mount, a box behind the fan with a anemometer, preferably a vane type and rather large diameter, at the outlet from the box. This would measure the airspeed and total volume of air moved. Put a 120mm radiator behind the fan and you get a standardized and pretty typical obstruction in a computer cooling situation. Measure with and without the obstruction to see how the fans performance changes depending on how obstructed it is. Perhaps also test with the obstruction on the intake side of the fan to see how that influences the airflow and noise.

Thermaltake have always been copycats. In the early 2000s it was Heatsinks, more recently caselab's cases, they're unoriginal. I stopped supporting them 10 years ago
