Thank you so much for the comment! and: (in-persona response from the Contessa) All the crusaders I know tend to sleep in their respective Inns in the city of Rhodos. They lead quite the comfortable lives, by all accounts! 😀But I suppose it is quite different for those actively campaigning on the frontiers! 😉

I LOVE it! The tapestry is crazy nice. I'm in one like the blue/grey mundane tent to your northeast. YOUR tent is the goal! I mean, a period pavilion based on my early norse persona. I like your hygiene bucket! Yes, I actually use my little wooeden (anti lice) comb, it is quite useful. Containers, baskets, buckets, etc. I love them!!! The sewing book is great! I have pennsic garb with the hems still stained from decades of pennsic pasts. Hanging things up IN your tent is greatly preferrable, both for access and storage. AND airing.... I love the tent "lining" The morning sun is BRUTAL. LOVE your bed. I'm on an air mattress covered/layered with sheepskins. I am getting to the age that I need it up OFF the ground to make it easier to get up and down, and the underside of the bed provides storage!(rope bed planned) I like the bathing bucket. Oh YIKES....the privy! Yes, it has eaten many an accessory. Love your cat. We had a hen....complete with garb and accessories....(including a tiny bronze thor's hammer) who joined us at events, and loved the attention. She would get all excited when we put her in it, she got the idea. When she was garbed and armed (a yarn needle with an amber crossguard and bone skull pommel which she wore on a sheath on her back) I can't count the times that someone asked me if it was safe to give her a sword. I have two words for them....opposable thumbs.) At very least, we had fresh eggs every morning at events. At the Potrero war, we attended the food court daily to turn over our new egg to the crepe merchant, who would make our breakfast. Your kitty had the right idea.....just enjoy with family. She trilled listening to the music and singing, and bawked unkind comments at combatants while watching the fighting. Animals make life better. (Chicken 'garb" of embroidered herb-dyed linen studded with tiny amber beads. Tiny chain with thor's hammer Heavy leather studded belt with leather sword sheath and a tiny (less than 1") bottle of mead. a fur cloak for cold nights.) She "guarded" our encampment like a trooper! It's funny seeing drunk people back up when faced with an armed red hen. In their inebriated state, they are unsure of it's actual danger.......and it takes a moment before they start to laugh. Priceless. Cats, however, don't do accessories! I have seen them at events, perfectly comfortable in their moveable "home."

0:50 OMG that necklace! Did you make it? Oh and how do you keep the butter from spoiling? I love the wooden toothbrush and your toiletry kit!!! Such a great idea for keeping even every day essentials in period. 👌 I also really love that you use that bucket & beautiful towel for normal washing. I love to see items being actually used! I love that you've created a separate bedchamber! And that canopy! 😍❤️ And you have a real straw mattress, how neat is that?! I've seen people using the rope or set beds but I've never seen anyone use a real straw mattress! Did you have any issues with tiny creatures in your bed from it? I love the tapestry wall/backdrop for your main living space! Where did you get it? In the future would you do another "How to play on a shoestring budget" but with your tent/event campsite as the subject? Would be super helpful and interesting! Thanks for the tour and for sharing your temporary living space. 😁

Wow, great comments and questions! The collar is by Armour and Castings, an amazing Ukranian caster who are still producing during through the war. The wooden toothbrush was actually part of the amenity kit I got flying in business class on Air New Zealand - one of the best amenity kits I have ever received on a flight! I normally have waxed linen wraps for my toiletry jars as well, but forgot to bring them this time! I too love using beautiful items for their intended purpose! And this one did actually wash pretty clean adespite two weeks of Pennsic dirt abuse! That canopy is really super essential to me being able to sleep past dawn in the mornings - and it keeps my sleeping space cooler even when the full sun heats up the pavilion itself! Or keeps my sleeping space warmer if the pavilion gets cold at night. At Double Wars in Sweden, where temps can literally drop below freezing at night, it was a Godsend! No issues at all ever from tiny creatures in the straw - I hjave been using a straw mattress at Pennsic since 2008, and have never experienced any issues! Plenty of layers between my body and the actual mattress. 🙂 That tapestry is yet another deadstock Ebay purchase. I have a video on the general process here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/or6oedSqr86XnYU.html I think a medieval glamping cheaposimilar video is a great idea! I will consider how to go about that...Especially since the tablecloth on that table is one of my cheaposimilar suggestions from a cheaposimilar video. 😀 So pleased you enjoyed the video and deeply appreciate you taking the time to ask so many great questions!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment here! I plan on adding some new items to my kit this year, specifically cotton wool and powder so that I can powder my skin after applying my very natural sunblock (which is basically just sunflower oil and zinc oxide and stains my medieval attire pretty badly). The powder actually sets the suncream perfectly, allowing it to last longer as well as preserving my neckline and sleeve cuffs from the concoction!

@thecreativecontessa
@thecreativecontessa Жыл бұрын
The great thing about this setup is that it packs down really well! It would fit tightly in a decent-sized sedan (if one were driving alone) and easily into a minivan, SUV, or station wagon. The light-weight aluminum center pole breaks down into three pieces, for instance, and the pavilion folds up into a bag that would be checkable on an airplane without having to pay overweight/oversize charges, and all the poles are sized similarly. So you could actually fly to events with this pavilion! 🙂

They disassemble for travel. You set it up each time. Most of our people have a van, truck, suv OR jointly rent a Uhaul as a group. I would suggest the jointly rented Uhaul for first timers. The tents and beds are a bit of a pain to set up each time; but the effect is priceless. Trust me after two weeks of sleeping on it you WILL appreciate the bed, and the head space in the tent. You can do a weekend in your car with less grand accomodations. Most large groups have a great tent of their own for group dinners and socialization, and sleep in smaller surrounding tents. There ARE areas where every single one is a period production, and it's awesome! But do what you can to join the fun! We all started out in a pup tent with our feet out the door. When you are purchasing a tent for a two week encampment, remember.....four person=ONE person. Eight person means a couple with some gear. You're going to LIVE in there, not just sleep. You need room for storage, movement, and sitting. Our three person family uses a "family" three room tent. Figure at least 10x10 per person ideally. Just remember you're taking it all HOME afterwards, even if you bought it just for the event. Take it HOME to discard it. Too many people abandon damaged tents, and it's a burden on the family who owns the event site (The Coopers) Be a mench, and take it home. Be the barbarian you have always wanted to be, but when it's over, remember, you are on someone else's land. Preferably, don't leave anything but the dead grass where your tent used to be.

Great question! The rope bed is super comfortable! The straw mattress is so thick that one does not feel the ropes at all. It's also important that the ropes be close enough together (which these are). The rope net actually offers far more give than slats, so I prefer a rope bed. :)

@thecreativecontessa
@thecreativecontessa Жыл бұрын
@@cherylstraub5970 Next year, I will do a video on stringing the rope bed, I think! The ropes are not hard to tension as long as you have two people and cheat a little - we use ratchet straps to put the long boards under more tension while we run the ropes - like a bow. Then once the bed is strung with the long boards bowed towards each other and we release the ratchet straps, the ropes are highly tensioned. Sometimes the ropes sag, and there were devices in the 18th century to take up the slack and apply extra tension using torque. I have one somewhere but had yet to have to use it thanks to these rathect straps. 😀

How was the food court? I heard that the Bread Bowle had retired.
@thecreativecontessa
@thecreativecontessa Жыл бұрын
The bread bowl had indeed retired. I'll be honest. The food court is not a very impressive place. At my first pennsic twenty-seven years ago, the food court was a much more interesting place. Back then there was the battlefield Bakery, Phil's Grill with yummy Greek food, and other options. I do still like the Delights of Cathay because that's a good way to get a lot of good quality, fresh veggies and pretty tasty meat for not too much money. And the Australian burger place can have some interesting options as well. There is a middle eastern style coffee house that does have really high quality mokka and some decent Middle Eastern sweets. But honestly there are no actual medieval food vendors anywhere on site.
@dennisperusse3837
@dennisperusse3837 Жыл бұрын
@@thecreativecontessa Yeah, I agree the food court can be rather lack luster at times. The last war I went to was in 2019 and I only recently acquired a pic of the food court as my only picture of war was from someone on Facebook who was kind and sent me their pic. Usually when I’m there I take a lot of pics where the food court is one such area. Where Covid really tossed a wrench into things for the SCA it was interesting to hear from the members of my own household how things went for them.

@@dennisperusse3837 So there was the Beast and Boar, the Delights of Cathay, a new little place that had sanwiches, hotdogs, and other items that I did not really peruse in great detail; the Australian Burger place, the Hershey's Ice Cream booth, and the Turkish-style coffee shop (which was sadly relocated from the top of Rune Stone Hill to the loud, crowded foodcourt junction). Not much, really. Last pennsic was super small - tons of empty space everywhere. I expect it will be massive this year.

That being said, I have considered making a molded leather cover/sheath for the containers any of my regular toiletries that shouldn't be decanted, like my skin creams. Doing that for the sunblock would reduce the loss of sunblock at the end of the event from having decanted more than I actually needed. So thank you for getting my brain working in that direction again! 😊
