A walk through a large traditional Japanese house with a beautiful garden in Tokyo. The Asakura House is located three minutes away from Daikanyama station (one stop from Shibuya). The house was built in 1919 by a very rich family and it is rare to find such a well preserved building that survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the fire bombings in World War II. A must see if you like Japanese architecture and homes.
From Daikanyama Station, go to the intersection of Hachiman Dori and Kyu-Yamate Dori. It is a very short walk. You will see a police box (koban) at the intersection. Take the pedestrian bridge to the koban. The entrance is located across the street from the koban. The fee is 100 yen. Recommended not to go during winter in order to enjoy the views of the garden.

I cannot tell you how much I love how the Japanese incorporate the outside into their homes and live with nature, instead of choppping it all down like they do here in the UK to make god damn awful estates

@@jaredgrey39 there are plenty of detached houses and also all the houses cant look completely different as it may mess up the style of the road, e.g if you made a modern house in a historical neighbourhood

Cicadas are everywhere in Japan, I remember there being one in the hallway once and my Japanese teacher picked it up with her hands and threw it out the window like it was nothing, it simply flew away. Apparently people in Japan will catch them for fun during the summer.

Asakura family who built this house was rice traders and owned this area for generations.They still hold the shopping mall called "Hillside Terrace" behind this house.Cicada in Japan may be different species from US.The sound of cicada changes four times a year.Nobody feels noisy.The cicada of August sounds like "tsuku tsuku hooshi".In Japanese hooshi means Buddhist monk. I am waiting for this cicada coming to my home.

japanese had style before anyone else knew what style was! American craftsman homes have a lot of japanese knockoff design features but they're missing those wonderful sliding paper doors and outer hallways. Those outer hallways are fantastic! It seems like it would help make the interior of the house much quieter with a hall built around the entire living quarters.

One advantage of having the passageways on the periphery of the house is that they act as insulation for the rooms which are then easier to heat in the wintertime. One thing I'd like to see is what kind of storage they have for dishes, linens clothing, books etc. I like the bare room look but how about convenience? Surely there's a system.
@Fear_the_Nog
@Fear_the_Nog 11 жыл бұрын
There are scarcely any in Japanese culture. They sleep in Futons which are stored during the day.....the only things that exist are low tables for tea, meals, and lamps, which are also able to be stored. The philosophy is to have an empty space, which reflects Zen Buddhism's meditative take on emptiness, as well as the practicality of using the space to do anything. As such, a house is highly flexible and often reconfigured easily to fit whatever need.

Interesting to hear mention, in the blurb, that the house survived the sad bombing, of the Second World War. My experience of Tokyo, before the Second World War, was that most of the city was covered in wooden houses of two stories. Much like the density of the houses in London when that city was burned, by fire, three hundred and fifty years ago, spreading from eaves to eaves; the houses in London were all made of wood, too, mostly with thatched roofs, even in the city. . It is hard for modern day folk to imagine a wooden city but via text books we can see that this was common and that sparks (from bombs etc,) flying in the wind made the fire spread quickly. . Sorry to go on, thank you very much, Bobby, for posting the video, The Asakura House is a great place, thank you for telling, we all, all about it. . 0:41 Ill fitting carpet; someone should tell them. 2:12 The hallways are "on the outside"? I don't think you mean that, the hallway is "running around the perimeter of the house" might be better. Or just side; "run around the entire side of the house". "Outside" implies a separate structure. . 5:00 An Enclosed Garden with pond.

Always loved the traditional architecture and the homes with the interior gardens.. surprised by how small the rooms are for such a large place.. all hallways.. would have been nice to see them have artifacts and furnishings you would see used to get an idea of what and how the rooms were used.. though there probably wasn't a lot in terms of material possessions I guess.
