Hi everyone! I went to Himeji castle and had a tour in English. It wasn't planned this way. A Japanese lady approached me and offered to be my private guide! There were few guests and there was no line.
My actual plan was just to find OKIKU'S WELL but I ended up going for a tour of Himeji castle. To get to the well, you to enter Himeji castle grounds so and admission fee of at least 1000 Yen is required.
Watch this long video of my tour. It was quite facinating!
Here is a copy of what I wrote and read about Okiku's well during post production.
Banchō Sarayashiki is a Japanese ghost story of broken trust and broken promises, leading to a dismal fate.
The story is about a beautiful servant named OKIKU who worked in the dungeons below the castle. She was in a love with a brave warrier named Kinugasa Motonobu. Her master was a cruel and brutal samurai named Tessan Aoyama and was the regent of the caslte. The true owner of the castle was Lord Norimoto. One day Okiku overheard Tessan’s plot to overthrow Lord Nor imoto and told her lover and some other warriors about it. They were able to stop the attack by informing Lord Norimoto which allowed him to escape. Tessan took control of the castle. He was furious that Lord Norimoto was informed and escaped. He sought the traitor. One of the warriors named Danshiro was devious. He wanted OKIKU for himself and demanded OkIKU to marry him. However she refused him. After being refused too many times by OKIKU, DANSHIRO stole one of the treasured plates from the castle and blamed it on OKIKU. OKIKU was shocked because she was responsible for caring for the plates.OKIKU kept counting them but there were only 9.
DANSHIRO gave one last chance to OKIKU but she refused him! DANSHIRO was enraged that because she refused him again and would put her life on the line for another man. He killed OKIKU with his sword and threw her body down the well.
It is said that you can hear OKIKU counting from 1-9 from the well but never saying 10 breaking into a loud shriek!

I think they built steep stairs for a purpose. I observe many other Japanese castles, and they all have the same steep stair feature. Maybe they built it so steep that when the enemy storm in they have to be careful with their step-up(thus distraction), any distraction in battle means life and death. This steep stair also serves as one of those choke points around the castle, no matter how large the army is, they can only enter a few at a time. This would allow a much smaller force to defend the castle.

Thank you for the video! I just had a blood dna test, I found out I have japanese/chinese ancestry, also scottish, punjabi, bengal and sri lankan tamil. I guess that's why I had an interest in the shinto religion. I read about it in our encyclopedias at home. It was eight or nine generations ago. Do you live and work in Japan?

@@WOWTHATSJAPAN2 I truly believe my ancestors were urging me to study on Japan. I even had korean and japanese friends in my youth. I am grateful for them. Grateful for my ancestors urging me also. Even though it was eight or nine generations ago, I do believe they still influence your life to some degree.
