In this video, I go to the brand new music store at @Sweetwater in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The new store is three times the size of their old store, and now makes them both the largest online music retailer, as well as the largest music store! I take a tour through the entire Sweetwater complex, talk about the history of Sweetwater, visit the store in detail - and then review most of the synthesizers there!

All I can say is HOLY COW What an adventure at Sweetwater. Like you Scott. I am a huge fan of that business, and I will be a loyal patron of them. I bought many many things from sweetwater. My Modal Cobalt 8x to name one. Great tour of their vast facility. Appreciated your input and observations as you walked through the store. Excellent video. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Thank you for this excellent video. There are many folks who have posted their Sweetwater experience but yours is, in my opinion, the best so far. You actually took the time to show all the items they have and I could pause the video to take a look at things, unlike the others where it's just a blur sometimes.

Cool. I have seen many synth reviews from Sweetwater. But I had never been taken on such an excellent tour of the store. You must have had sweet dreams that night, seeing all that mouthwatering gear :D I was surprised to see the Korg Prologue in there. It's my first synth that I bought a couple years ago. It was advertised as their flagship analog (hybrid) synth. But now I always hear about Kronos, Nautilus, and other Korgs, but never about Prologue. Besides from some people who own one, or who create user-oscillators for it. For a flagship, it sure feels a bit like Korg abandoned the project. I can't compare it to much else, but I do like it a lot. Great keys, great sound, looks so beautiful, quite easy to use.

The user-defined oscillators is definitely a great selling point of the Prologue. Some of those Prologue oscillators can also be loaded into the $100 NTS-1! The Prologue really did surprise me at how good it sounded. I wasn't expecting that. I need to win the lottery. :)

Ahhhh..... kindred spirits when it comes to synths, you and I. I am mostly digital too, but decided I definitely wanted analog to input into my new-ish 1010Music BlackBox sampler. And what a combination that was...made in heaven, the absolute most incredible sound from the BlackBox with stellar output stage and DACs matched to analog MicroBrute and original Korg Minilogue. My first synth was a JunoAlpha2 bought new in the late 80s, then only digital synths for the next 40 years, and then the two analogs listed above. We both are only concerned about interface and sound, we don't care about the hype or what's new, and don't care if it is digital/analog/hybrid. (I lived in Northern Indiana for 45 years, never went to Sweetwater, now live in CA :).

A great roundtrip to a synths dreamland. And taste is individual (which is good). Regarding the Access Virus, I've started with a Virus A 3 years ago and sold it. But recently a Virus KB (old but excellent) and more recent a Virus Darkstar. As for me one my "lonely island" synths (with Summit and Peak).

I couldn't see how the hell you could review 75 synths in one video but you sort of did. I trust your taste and you just ruling stuff out is really valuable. How about a vid that develops the idea a bit further. Without too much detail, why you would consider or not various current synths. There is so much choice! In the low to mid price range and I'm too far away from any stores that have stuff on display. I know you have covered (and I haven't yet watched) the kit in your studio. Keep up the amazing work :)

First, great video and now I definitely have to make the drive to Sweetwater! The Microfreak is almost too much fun -- I've got one, and I never get anything done as far as actually making a song because I have so much fun making new sounds with it. The "keyboard" does take some getting used to, though, but I'd bet that using the Hydrasynth as a controller for it would really rock. The Skulpt takes some getting used to, but it is actually easier to get around than you give it credit for, and it also has the advantage of the Modal app, just like the Cobalt8 and Argon8 and Craft Synth. In fact, they can all share the same app instance. Not to come off as a fanboy, but the Kronos is really a beast. It does take some time to get to know ... and love ... but there is really NO workstation that matches its ability, although the Fantom has the potential to better the Kronos. As for that Yamaha MODX/Motif/whatever: talk about dated, based directly on the SY99 and SY77 that came out in, what, 1991? Yes, AWM2 is that old. I'm not saying it's bad, but it is about the most dated tech out there at this point.

that was a killer video. I'm about to take advantage of the 2 year extended warranty. the display on my deepmind12 module is losing horizontal lines. I also like your overall taste in synths. not many people value workstations. i have a low end workststion yamaha MX88 which is my piano (this thing sounds super) and a KromeEX73 as my controller. my synth modules are the DM12m, microfreak and an UNO synth. JV-2080 ($200 used with 5x expansion cards ya i had to buy it) my injured reserve synths are a korg X-50 and a DX7 which need work. I have been eyeballing a MODX ever since that last software upgrade and you have definitely stoked the fire. i would also get a 73key, one piano is enough. and finally, i also got a wavestate when they first came out. crazy amazing power, and i was already used to the korg layer(combi) system. i just need to figure out how to update it. i have the wrong windows versions. ps. reverb has a little mod box for the microfreak where you can remove that stupid keyboard. i hate it. one false touch and you played the wrong key..zero tolerance for any feely-meely (my music channel is Autistic Einstein if you were curious. this is my comment channel) and in closing, i am SW of, but near to clevo, so sweetwater looks to be about a 3-4hr drive for me too. i got a laugh out of all the old prices. that's ok, all the price hikes cured my GAS for a while haha
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff 2 жыл бұрын
Don't downplay the MX88, it's a great synth - I used to have an MX61 (in blue!) and I still see people playing out live with them all the time. The DM12 is also a fantastic synth, and the effects engine in it is super powerful. I would definitely recommend the MODX - I actually sold my MX61 after I got my MODX because I found I never used the MX anymore afterwards! I also have all the factory and expansion DX7 patches loaded into my MODX (it plays DX7 patches directly in its FM-X engine). The Wavestate is a horrifically complex little beast, but with the new editor, it's made much less daunting, and the sounds it can produce are otherworldly - I got mine when it first came out as well.

Imagine a store like this in the UK (sadly, most of the "big" stores either went out of business (Turnkey) or moved over to the EU (Digital Village) ?!? Fantastic review of a great music emporium, Scott (just need to package the whole thing up and USPS it to London, haha) !

Possibly, yes ! More so relative to the US-produced gear (MOOG, Sequential, etc.) (UK import taxes are quite punitive), maybe less so for the EU-produced stuff ( Waldorf, etc.) or Asian territory gear (ASM, Roland)..

Hello, I've been quite surprised by you opinion about the Korg Kronos. It has huge sound design capabilities, especially with three of its nine engine : the VA engine (AL-1), the FM engine (MOD-7), the physical modeling (STR-1). Despite the MOD-7 works on 6 operators, comparing to the Montage/ModX 8 operators, it is more versatile because of its full modularity and some other specs. I own the Kronos and the Montage. I must say they are fully complementary. Theit tone signature are really different. If you find Kronos sounds outdated, you know that many people find the Montage/ModX sounds outdated too !! I absolutely don't agree, of course. Do you find a violin sound, or a piano sound outdated ? The DX7, 40 years old (!!), is still popular. The very first DX7, with its 12 bits resolution, is still desired for its noisy sound !! Some use Lo-fi effects in their FM synth in order to keep these noisy sounds back. All depends on what we are doing with this synths. And for a passionnate sound designer, the Kronos capabilites are infinite.
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff 2 жыл бұрын
When I say "outdated" I was referring more to the Kronos having pretty much the same sounds and engines from ten years ago. I suppose the same could be said for Montage, as some of its sounds came over from the MOTIF. I do think the Kronos (and Nautilus, for that matter) really need a faster processor for running the touch screen. With today's available (and cheap) processor technology, user interfaces should have almost instant response, and I found the Korgs quite laggy and slow. The MODX and Montage are better, but still not as snappy as I would like.
@liviou2004
@liviou2004 2 жыл бұрын
@@ScottsSynthStuff Oh, yes, I see what you mean. Thank you for your answer. On a pure technical point of view I do agree with you. The Kronos motherboard, for example, is completely outdated and no more available. It's been a long time the idea of an hardware upgrade kit (with processor + motherboard + memory) has been suggested to Korg. Personnaly, I would have purchased such a kit and installed by myself, for a long time. There's a guy who did a tutorial for that matter. But to much complicated for the most people. Personnaly, I'm not embarassed with the touchscreen, be in the Kronos or the Montage. I don't need higher speed, it would been too fast for my brain !! So they perfectly suit me as they are. What worries me would rather be a Kronos motherboard failure, really. That the reason why all my synths are connected to an UPS power supply.

I have been using the Roland Cubes CM30 for my synth rig for 17 years now, not by choice, but because I can't afford to replace with active near fields. With the built in EQ I can get sound quality good enough for sound design and mixing. I then check my 2 track mix downs on Roland RSM90s near fields and a consumer Sony stereo as well as Sennheiser/Sony and Mackie studio headphones..then the car stereo. 17 years been working, my ears are trained, and never disappointed in my mixes or sound designs when played on friends sound systems. The biggest thing is these won't die, ultra dependable.
