The action on September 19, 1863 is really heating up here in Viniard Field. Jim Ogden of the National Park Service and Dr. Anthony Hodges of the Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association join us to detail the fighting and to show off some cool artifacts from the Indiana units at the Battle of Chickamauga. Hosted by Dr. Chris Mackowski of Emerging Civil War. #ChickamaugaBattlefieldTour

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Jim Ogden is national treasure. He has the ability to describe events in an informative and interesting manner. Love that you are bringing artifacts to the battlefield. It brings an extra level of connection. Chickamauga is a great place to visit. Thanks to all of you who bring us these compelling videos and I love that you are covering this theatre of the Civil War.

Been watching the videos on the '63 Western Campaign and am enjoying them very much as I find Chickamauga to be a very confusing battle to study. You folks have made things much clearer to me and I appreciate it. It was also very cool to see the "witness" Spencer Rifle and hear the story behind it, especially how it turns out that the govt stepped in and bought the rifles. Thanks again.

My great grandpa was there. Indiana volunteers th lightning brigade. His Spencer rifle is in our local museum. William Relph was name. He was wounded first day of battle. Right off the bat at 8:00 in morning. Story is that he laid out on the battlefield until dark. Then the ones still alive were gathered up and then rendered aid.

My grandpa lived in Tennessee when he was a teenager during the early 1900s and then again with my mom when she was 12 . They told me that the shots/bullets lay on the ground so thick you couldn't see the actual ground. I know my grandpa picked up handfuls and kept them. I don't know what happened to all of his things after he died, but I like to imagine the battlefields the way he described them.

Excited to see y’all are doing this series. As someone who is a civil war enthusiast and is also from Chickamauga, it’s hard to find good videos detailing the battle. Great job guys

One of the most overlooked battles of the war. As bloody as Sharpsburg and Gettysburg but did not involve the personaes that the Eastern Front did, although Longstreet and Hood were there. Longstreets behavior after the battle and Hoods conduct in 64 would overshadow the victory earned here. ONe of the very few times the Confederate Army outnumbered the Federal Army during the war.

@@adampender2482 I'd argue that there were every bit the 'personaes" at Chickamauga that were in the eastern front. George Thomas, Phil Sheridan, John Wilder, Brannan, McCook and Hindman, Cheatham, Cleburne, D.H. Hill, Breckenridge, Polk , Buckner and of course Nathan Bedford Forrest

@@generalnuisance91 by personaes I meant those that are "popular" with the less serious civil war "buffs" shall we say. At least that's what I think I meant 8 months ago

I’m so glad to have found your channel! We recently moved here from CO & we board our horses on a property that borders that national park along the south fenceline. I’m super excited to check it out now… I was a little intimidated to wander around by myself up there (so vast and a lot of ground to cover!) but now I’m excited.. maybe I’ll run into Mr Ogden if I’m lucky. He seems like a great teacher and I appreciate you guys making this series of videos.

Gentlemen! Awesome video(s) of this 3 day campaign!! Can you direct me to a website that might give data on Union soldiers captured at this event. I have found that my 2x great grand uncle fought at Chickamauga, was capture on the 19th of Sept and taken to Andersonville, GA prisoner camp and died within a years time. I would like to know if this could’ve happened at the vineyard. He was with the 49th Ohio Infantry. God Bless you, American Battlefield Trust, America, and especially the men who fought and gave up their lives during this troubled time.❤️🇺🇸❤️

Really enjoying this series. I've been out that way and walked Chickamauga but that was about thirty years ago (where does the time go?) Great to see it again accompanied by your fine narration. Hope I can make it back that way sometime.

Since George Pickett and his division were too decimated at Gettysburg they were in no condition to travel with Hood and McLaws divisions of Longstreet's Corps to Georgia. In Pickett's absence Bushrod Johnson kind of took his place under Longstreet's command at Chickamauga and did what Pickett failed to do at Cemetery Ridge - breakthrough the Union Center. Somehow, even though Johnson and his men had been part of the Army of Tennessee under Bragg, they accompanied Longstreet when Bragg sent him to ostensibly attack Knoxville (probably to get him out of Bragg's hair, as he had led the charge to have Bragg replaced), and afterwards back to Virginia to become part of the Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
