In this video we take a thorough look at Bill and Maureen's 2014 Toyota Tacoma long bed with Four Wheel Campers's Fleet model pop-up camper in the back. I love how surprisingly spacious the camper is. It felt much larger inside than it looked on the outside. You can also tell that everything is well-built and of high quality. This thing was built to last.
I didn't film Bill saying how much the camper cost (he told me off-camera), but If you Google "Four Wheel Camper cost," the first result shows a 2020 Four Wheel Fleet MSRP being $19,395. That's similar to the number that Bill told me.

Big thanks to Bill and Maureen for hosting me for lunch and sharing their rig with me. I'd never been in a pop-up truck camper before this. They always look so small from the outside, but inside, this thing was far more roomy, airy, and bright than I expected. I often think about my retired mom and dad and what they'd like in a small camping setup. Sleeping in the back of their RAV4 doesn't interest them, but something like this? I don't think that would be a a difficult sell. -Tristan

If I had a truck and considered getting a pop up, this would be ideal. The fact you can lower the canvas during a storm and still have a place to sleep is huge for me. Security wise, this is so much better than a pull behind pop up! Looks very spacious and well thougjt out. Bill did a great tour. Thanks for shaing it!

Bill did a great job showing us around his camper, outside and inside. Thanks to SUV RVing for letting Bill talk without chatter and interruption. Very well done video! I'm impressed with the thoughtful design of that camper. Four Wheel camper seems to be a company that cares about what they do and has given a lot of attention to the details. That tiedown system seems innovative and secure. For as long as Bill and Maureen have lived in that camper it doesn't seem to show a lot of wear.

In 1998 I bought one off a Mazda that broke down on it's way to Alaska. No Jack's so 5 guys picked it off the Mazda and slid it onto my Toyota pickup. Was only about 700lbs. It was awesome for the truck and used it every summer until we had to sell it for a larger growing family. I still see it around town today. It was the first one anyone had seen around here (Yukon Territory) and there are quite a few now. Great walkthrough thank you.

Nice review of a great camping set up. We just finished our first trip with a slightly larger Hawk model from Four Wheel Campers on our Tundra half ton pick up. 3700 plus miles, about 150 of which were in 4WD. Portland to southern Arizona and Death Valley, into some very rough canyons (Marble, Warm Springs, Johnson, Trail). We love the camper/truck combo, particularly not losing our low center of gravity when getting into those remote areas.

Well done Bill. You covered everything. I can say that as I own a Fleet Side Dinette that rides on a Tacoma. I've had mine in some pretty high winds and it's held up real well. The flexible vinyl pop up walls have never leaked a drop even at the windows. I understand it's the same material that "Rubber Rafts" are made out of. 35K of camping trips so far and looking forward to many more.

D Ranger: The roof is a continuous, seamless sheet of aluminum. I don’t know the gauge. But if I recall right FWC actually has to source it from Europe because no US rolling aluminum mill makes it in the width of the top. At least as of 2013 when I bought ours. Bill

Sir, thank you. I'm in the market for this type of setup. This was a beautiful walk through and explanation of "everything". I recently finished the Pan American Highway from Florida to Argentina in a 2010 Palomino Bronco truck camper with a Toyota Tundra. I met a few people who had this set up with the Tacoma, I like this set up better. Especially needed for some of the small villiages and roads I traveled. The Bronco was toast by the time I finished the trip, as it's mostly for easy camping and not off roading and such. Thanks for your indepth review. Cheers!

Fantastic review, love so much about this setup. I have a 2014 Tacoma, but I went with the 5 foot bed :-(. On the suspension, while I have had good luck with Firestone airbags, they can dry out and fail after several years. I switched to Timbren rear leveler kit which are solid rubber inserts for about $225. You can’t adjust height and ride like the airbags, but for me, they have worked very well. Almost no leaning when cornering with heavy loads. If I do get another Tacoma, I’ll get a long bed after seeing this setup.
@lostinmt8370
@lostinmt8370 4 жыл бұрын
Jack: Thanks for your experience with Timbren. I suspect as you point out I will have to service the Firestone Airbags at some point as they are 6 years old. Switching to Timbren SES Levelers at this point would be problematic as I also replaced the OEM springs with a 2 inch lift, 7 leaf pack made by Alcan out of Colorado. I do see that Timbren makes spacers which might work in my case. Thanks for watching. Bill

I remember I was camping out the back of Knob Guts point near Manangatang Australia, we were in a very similar setup to this one. We had just had a lovely camp oven roast koala and platypus curry whilst playing guitar singing Slim Dusty songs. As the night went on we got stuck into the grog and got very drunk, I polished off 1 slab of bear and my husband the best part of a slab of beer. After a while we got the munchies and ate some ice cream and pancakes topped of with some chocolate cake. It was getting late and so Harry and I thought that we would go to bed, as soon as my head hit the pillow the bed began to spin and I felt unwell and Harry said "are you okay Herman?" to which I replied by lifting one leg up toward the roof of the camper and tried to fart but a little bit of poos came out. Harry also felt unwell and he made a vomit on the floor that I tripped on and twisted my ankle on as I tried to run out of the camper to vomit. The problem there was I hit my head and almost knocked myself out. Anyway the Camper is now for sale on ebay.

I’ve got an Outfitter Caribou Lite on my 2013 TRD Tacoma doublecab. We did Firestone airbags only, usually with 65 lbs of air in them. Many trips with this setup. At 90k I went to Bilstein 5100s and heavier front springs. Offroad.com built the front strut assemblies for me so only 4 bolts to swap each front corner. Transformed the ride. As far as maintenance on your taco at 90k, get ready to replace the serpentine belt, idler pullies (bottom one will go first by squealing in the cold), rebuild both front half shafts/replace inner and outer seals, and read drive shaft carrier bearing. 5100 and spring upgrade made a huge difference in stability. Had a dometic 3 way in our Scamp and same in the Outfitter. Never had an issue with it. Enjoy the rig!

Leo: Thanks for all the tips and specs on your build, it sounds perfect for you. I run 60 lbs on the right and 70 lbs on the “battery ladened” left. I installed a rear set of custom made Alcan leaf springs ( www.alcanspring.com ) on the rear with the air bags from day one! Your maintenance tips are very much appreciated. I do carry a spare serpentine belt with a flexible ratchet head wrench for the tensioner in my recover bin. But most important is a print out of the routing of the belt. It would probably take me 2 days of trial and error to get the routing right without it🤣😂. Bill

Hello there! Very nice little rig! I commend you on your minimalist footprint with modern quality and safety. The only item not there we need is a dry bathroom with foot flush toilet and shower, plus A/C! I do like the idea of the mid-sized truck. That’s how we roll also, but I’m a Chevy guy and we are on our second Colorado. The first was a 2016 Ext Cab Z71,4x4, V6, we bought for the wife to commute to work in and for both of us when together, or towing our 22’, 4,000 lbs Travel Trailer all over, up an down the East Coast from Bar Harbor ME to Key West FL, we’ve had till we both retired and moved to sunny Central Florida. Once there an all settled into our new home, after an epic 4 month adventure camping from Central Florida as far west as Corpus Christi and Waco Tx, checking out museums and local brew pubs while staying mostly in State Parks. After we settled in finally at our new home, we were in need of only one vehicle, so I went looking at all the half ton an mid-sized trucks an SUV’s. We wanted a new Gladiator, but their so dam expensive! But like I said above, we ended up with another Colorado, but a Crew Cab 4x4, V6, W/T Trim this time, mostly because I found one on the lot with exactly all I needed. Including OnStar 4G LTE WIFI! Along with the dealer installed Skid Plates offered on the Bison. I also changed the tires to the KO2, in 265/70-16 size, plus a 2” Level Lift Fox Coilover loger travel setup, with the FireStone Air Bags. With an 84 month 100,000 Bumper to Bumper Warranty! All for a total of just under 35k! Our Travel Trailer is a modest Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16FQ that weight just under 4,000 lbs gross. On that 4 month trip over 4,250 miles we averaged 16 mpg on the whole trip towing or exploring the areas in just the truck. The new truck gets 14 mpg towing on the highway at the speed limits or as low as 10 in the mountains. Commuting we get 17-26, with a high of 30 mpg on The Overseas Highway at night with the Cruise Control set at 45 mph, over a stretch 41 miles long at night cc’d with no traffic! We really like the Colorado and have had no issues in the first one we had just under 90,000 miles on it and still got 20k in trade on the new one! Well good luck, have fun and stay safe!

K. R. V. Thanks for sharing your latest rig build out it sounds great. You are able to park your trailer then hit the trails exploring!! So you should venture west to AZ and UT you would have a blast out here in your rig. Yeah bummer the Gladiator is so expensive😢. But I am still trying to figure out how I can get this FWC Fleet in that 5 foot Gladiator bed and get the overhang properly supported! 🧐

Lost In MT yea I hear you about the Gladiator! But the way Jeep has it configured, with the rear axle placed so far forward any slide it camper with have its center of gravity behind the axle, that would lighten the front axle too much, while leveraging too much weight on the rear axle! If I was not so enamored with the high speed passing power, empty an towing, I’d have gone with a DuraMax Diesel Colorado. But I’m glad I did not, especially with the present situation, around here in Central Florida, gas is down to under $2.00/gal.! Even though I use premium when towing, where I’ve discovered with the higher octane gas I am able to feather the gas pedal on the highway keeping the trans in a higher gear to get better mileage. In the mountains and on hills if I feather it I keep the rpm’s down and keep the trans from downshifting so quickly.

K. R. V. Thanks for the comments back. I have measured out the Gladiator box and it’s looks ok. As you so observantly point out the axle location is an issue. I have to measure the back of bed Gladiator to the axle and compare it to my Tacoma long bed. I have my private pilots license, so weight and balance calculations are always on my mind! The Tacoma axle spacing puts negligible weight to my front axle (See my comments to “Travels with Yoly” for my Weights.) Stay safe and healthy!!

Nice setup. So to overcome the limited payload capacity of a tacoma all we have to do is ad beefier spring and air bags?
@lmcc007
@lmcc007 4 жыл бұрын
mixflip My 06 Tacoma has a payload capacity of 1200 lbs. which includes me. Air bags and springs help with sagging and beefing up breaks will help you stop, but you shouldn’t exceed your payload capacity. The truck will probably operate fine by going a bit over capacity, but if you get into an accident (your fault or not) insurance may refuse to pay.

I doubt that the water in the hot water heater can be used as part of the total amount of usable water because when the water supply in the holding tank is gone, the water pump will not be able to pump the water out of the water heater.

@@budirving7007 To address this issue, the Camper is plumbed in a manner that will allow you to drain that 6 gallons back into the 20 gal tank. Then by closing 2 valves you can completely isolate the water heater tank. That allows you to use the last 6 Gallons. Any water not able to be pumped out of the 20 gal tank can be drained if needed out the outside value that I pointed out in the beginning of the video. Thanks for watching SUV RVing’s channel - Bill

You cannot increase payload, mods are for ride quality. Adding suspension modifications lower your payload, they do not increase it, ...100 lbs in springs etc, you now have 100 lbs less payload. The Tacoma has an available payload of between 1100 and 1200 lbs in 4wd, that means that with upgrades, passengers, fuel, water, gear, etc. these campers are just too heavy for Tacomas, simple...people always speak of upgrades to suspension, but never speak of braking...they are actually decreasing their payload by adding things. The new Ranger is closer to 1500-1600 lbs payload and I would carefully add up the weight when putting a FWC on one of them, Tacoma? No. Keep in mind that Rangers, Nissans, and Toyotas outside of N. America, have bigger payloads, diesel engines etc. almost 1000 lbs across the board for a Ranger or Hilux.

2 10 lb. propane tanks is a great idea! Lifting a full 20 lb tank up there is too heavy for me! The dual or different purpose of the steps is great, too. Do those 4 cushions for the queen bed make the lower bed into a couch? I love the windows, too! Pop-up campers are the only kind I would want because of driving in wind and being top heavy on dirt roads. And the fact that there is a bed without popping it up is great, even if it's because you're too tired when you park.

Thumbs up Bill, I do like your camper & the exterior looks of excellent build quality. Wonderfully demonstrated too. Everyone of us have our own likes & dislikes so I'm glad you showed us YOUR design. A couple of comments after watching your demonstration, 1. Why a dual cab, you could have even more camper space? 2. Maybe due to licensing regulations but if you could overhung the rear slightly and have a slight floor cut-a-way it could possibly give you a little more entry height. Btw: Enjoying your replies in the comments too! Happy travel's when you can move freely again.
@lostinmt8370
@lostinmt8370 4 жыл бұрын
Blue Yonder: We selected a dual cab because we are retired and our kids come to visit, and the other is gear storage. FWC only makes one “shell” model (But lots of interior options) for the 6 foot bed length Tacoma. So truck cab does not play a role in camper length. On your second question, I have seen that arrangement on full size pickups. The overhang for me would be a “Departure” angle issue. I have already dragged the receiver hitch getting out of a number of washes! Also if you check my actual weight reply, It would only add to my rear axle weight and subtract from my front. Best wishes to you, we all hope to be on the move soon! Thanks for watching. Bill
