The Paso Fino name means 'fine step'. The Paso Fino is a blend of the Barb, Spanish Jennet, and Andalusian horse and was bred by Spanish land owners in Puerto Rico and Colombia to be used in the plantations because of their endurance and comfortable ride. All Pasos share their heritage with the Peruvian Paso, the American Mustangs, and other descendants of Colonial Spanish Horses. Puerto Rican and Colombian horses, as well as Paso Finos from Cuba and other tropical countries, have been interbred frequently in the United States to produce the modern American Paso Fino show horse.
On the second voyage of Christopher Columbus from Spain to the Americas in 1493, he disembarked with his soldiers, 20 horses and 5 mares on the island of Borinquen at the bay of Aguada (today Añasco), and gave the region the name San Juan Bautista.[2][3] Soon after, in May 1509, the first governor of the island, Juan Ponce de León, brought horses to Puerto Rico from his hacienda, El Higuey, located on the neighboring island of La Española (now Hispaniola).

It takes a horse rider to appreciate the beauty and power of these magnificent horses. I used to have a Paso Fino horse. Beyond their visual elegance and the syncopated sound of their horseshoed hooves, what really makes them special is that the ride goes easy on your body. What makes riding a horse rough is the impact on your body as it is jolted up and down, a Paso Fino horse keeps your body horizontally aligned. You'll really come to appreciate it if you have to travel by horse for more than two hours. Your body will thank you for picking a Paso Fino. It might look like a vain exercise, but back when there were no cars this is how people traversed long distances. What you're witnessing is living history.

In UK we rise to the trot, which means one develops strong leg muscles..but a smooth gaited horse you can sit to would be relaxing for long rides, for sure. Rising means that one has to change the diagonal every so often, as often horses prefer one over the other...just sit for two beats then rise again.

@@Oakleaf700 Yes I never see any other Country using the ride and trot like we do here in the UK, it makes strong leg muscles for the rider and easier on the horses back I would assume. I never knew the history of these magnificent horses so I thank the OP for letting us no.

Maybe I've watched too many Columbia narco-novella but the Paso Fino and their ambling are beautiful... When TP Industries is successful enough, I'm buying a ranch in Grapeseed and we'll ride nothing but Paso Fino!

Paso finos are a breed found in the eje cafetero which is in the northwest of Colombia, the llanos use regular mixed breeds suited for that sort of labor, you aint gonna find a paso fino there really, its a prestigious horse

They can also do flat walk, collected walk, Paso Corto, Paso Largo, Some can trot, they can canter and gallop.

What is the purpose for that mincing, choppy gait? It looks very uncomfortable for both horse and rider. I thought this breed was known for comfort in the saddle and covering ground smoothly. Thanks.

mawmawvee the gait is not man made and is completely natural. But it does look weird

@@rusty2998 the gate do is man made since the it was bred to develop that gait which after centuries its completely natural, these horses were symbols of wealth and used mostly at parades by rich people

@@rusty2998 mustangs are wild spanish horses in north america not in south america, paso fino was bred and developed in the eje cafetero by wealthy people, the horse acquired its gait because it was used mainly on stone roads, the gait made it smoother for the rider, thats how these horses came to be

I have yet to see a horse moving like this that is not being made to do it by the rider or trainer. Like dressage, the movement is enhanced or reinforced through training and controlled by the rider. It is not a step that is normal to any horse. and the high stepping versions are only achieved through cruelty.

If you are riding on a trail and want a smooth ride then this horse is a good choice. It can go much faster at that gait and they normally have a good personality.
