It's a tough place to get to but man is it worth it. Carne Golf Links was one of our favorite stops on the trip. A rugged, brawny links on the Mullet Peninsula, this Eddie Hackett design is one of Tom Coyne's favorites in the entire world.

Next summer will be 20 years since I played Carne with my dad and uncle. My uncle, in his infinite wisdom, thought it would be a nice relaxing treat for my dad who had taken a liking to golf. At that time my dad was on the heart transplant list and was a 30 handicapper at best. I'll never forget the look of trepidation on his face standing on the first tee with the wind howling in on us from the Atlantic. For 18 holes he hacked it round Carne and took every opportunity to f*** and blind my uncle out of it. "How could you ever think this would be relaxing?". After finishing on 18 it had got to the stage where I was just hoping that I still had a lift home when out of nowhere my dad says..."Well if I can get through that today I can get through any transplant". He got called in for the transplant a few months later and got a good 18 years out of the new heart before passing away last year. Next summer is probably as good a time as any to go back.

I laughed out loud at that story of Carne. The bit about the lift home reminded me so much of the rounds I played with my own dad.

I have found the more recent seasons are being formatted closer to the Strapped pattern with more emphasis on the community/city. I do miss the "older" model with emphasis towards the on course banter and exploration as they play.

As an “Inglishmun” hooked on your journeys and adventures, I think I now get why so. No matter the larks and scrapes you get up to, it’s the respect that you show everywhere you go. Whether it’s privilege manicured to within an inch of its life, or somewhere raw and honest crying out for people to make the pilgrimage, you make the effort to immerse yourselves and the output reflects that effort. I pretty much want to play everywhere you’ve been for that reason.

I play here every year and thought I'd had all the goosebumps I was going to have... but this video brings them back! Carne remains my favourite golf course anywhere and the prospect of a composite course is captivating. As has been noted in another comment, the Kilmore nine was designed (and built) by Ally McIntosh, who developed earlier designs by Jim Engh. Their budget was just €200,000.

Just got back from Ireland. Played all 3 nines at Carne during my 3 rounds there. As great as the Hackett course is, the Kilmore 9 tops it. Amazing place. FYI, they switched the 9s on the Hackett course since this was filmed. So, for example, the 17th on the Hackett that Tom Coyne mentioned is now the 8th. Spoke to Gerry and Fiona and mentioned this video. Gerry said that the guys showed up early in the morning and were very professional. There is a reason why this series is so good and they make it look so casual. Oh, and my buddy aced the Kilmore 10th (18:55 on the video) from the white tees with a strong wind at our backs.

Great ‘Tour Sauce’ episode on Carne Belmullet. With three buddies I visited Carne in September 2019 and had the same warm welcome and friendly reception. After our round, Gerry showed us his scheme for re-routing and incorporating the new Killmore 9 holes into a 'truly spectacular championship golf course'. Gerry offered, actually insisted we go out and play the new Killmore 9. It was WILD!! Can’t wait to get back to Belmullet and play Carne again, especially once combined. It is on top of my list just behind Cruit Island. Looking forward to the next few weeks as we also played Enniscrone and Rosses Point. On a side note, to a person, we three do not believe Tom Coyne walked to Carne. Way too long, way too far. Hell, it was a long drive. We ask for proof, please
