Video description from the original upload:
"Adam highlights the striking similarities between music and spoken language. At a young age, his observation of music being used as a form of communication between professionals, was one of the reasons he went on to pursue this career. Adam Neely is a bassist, and music educator and KZfaqr with an engaged subscriber base of 500,000, 2 million monthly views, and 42 million lifetime views. His video essays, gig vlogs and educational content explore what music means, and what it means to be a musician. Sometimes called the "VSauce of music," Adam engages a wide popular audience with esoteric and obscure subjects in music, tying them to other subjects in neuroscience, acoustics, aesthetics, history and art. As a bass player, he also shares his experiences as a working professional session musician in New York City. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community."

I know i'm late, but still. The audio here is, at least to my hearing and understanding, not stereo, but mono. He probably took only the left channel, amplified it and rendered the video again with effectively mono audio settings - eighter by literally rendering mono or by having left and right channel be the same (fixed) audio track.
@mattheasboelter5217
@mattheasboelter5217 4 жыл бұрын
All you have to do is take the content of the left channel, and copy it to the right. When working with stereo we have two channels of audio, each to be played by a different speaker. When working with mono, we only have a single channel. Likely what happened with the TEDX presentation is that they recorded in mono, getting a single channel of audio. When it was brought in to be edited, the software was using two channels, and when it encountered the mono, it played all of the mono signal through the left channel. This leaves us hearing the presentation coming out of only the left channel. To fix it, all he had to do was take the contents of the left channel, and copy it to the right, making it a the equivalent of mono, even if it's technically stereo audio.

Claude Lévi-Strauss is referring to capital M "Music" here, not musical compositions. A work can be altered and reimagined indefinitely, but a musical concept cannot be anything other then what it is - there is no analogy other then itself. An F#maj7 carries emotion, story and feeling that is essential to that relationship of frequencies. Attempting to translate that essence to another set of frequencies or another medium would be destroying it's very definition.
