The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is a once-in-a-generation undertaking. Not only will the project deliver much-needed transportation improvements for international travellers, it will also provide jobs and opportunities for growth to the Windsor-Detroit region and includes features that make this project truly distinctive.
The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3). A public-private partnership is a long-term performance- based approach to procuring public infrastructure where the private sector assumes a major share of the risks in terms of financing and construction and ensuring effective performance of the infrastructure, from design and planning, to long-term maintenance.

There are many studies that show epoxy coated rebar can be worse due to the fact that the epoxy can actually trap water between the coating and the bar causing more damage due to corrosion over time.

3:50 how long are the pieces of rebar? Are they connected to the pieces below, or overlapping? Is the rebar a larger diameter closer to the ground?

I’m not in the industry but I believe the rebar is welded onto other pieces as the construction goes up - so it’s more or less one continuous steel structure from the base to the top of the tower (35 underground plus 140m above ground now, 35+220 = 255m at the final height) And I don’t think they use different size rebar, just more rebar at thicker areas.

They don’t weld the rebar because it denatures the steel. They use lap splices (kinda like overlapping). The rebar footing is much larger in diameter than the tower legs.

Surface rust doesn’t affect the rebar or its stability. It’s totally normal.

rust is iron+air+water ain't too much air or water getting in there once the casting is complete, not for a good 50 years at least. if they do it right it'll last 100+ years
