David Garibaldi: The master of groove and master of not *overplaying-show-them-your-chops-at your-loudest* school of drumming lol. A treat to watch, so up close!
@teedub1274 жыл бұрын
Back in the 70's David's dad was the head of the school bus barn in my town and every time TOP would get ready to go on tour, they warmed up with a free concert for the HS kids in the valley. BUMP CITY baby!

Such ease: relaxed limbs, no rushing the fills, and a fat-ass groove. It’s always a treat to watch masters in action up close like this. #goals

Back in the mid 90's( 93/94?) I was playing in the Brian Setzer Orchestra. We played the Filmore and Bernie Dresel hired Mr. Garibaldi to cover soundcheck for him because he had a session back in Los Angeles. During the soundcheck , Brian kept telling him " Feel free to play louder " . After about the third time he turned to us in the trumpet section and asked if Brian was jerking his chain ? We told him No. Bernie was really F'n loud and don't worry about it. The look on Garibaldi's face was priceless. Moral of the story. You don't have to play too loud to drive a band especially when you're mic'd . Loved Bernie , but he sure worked hard and busted the ears of the 3rd trumpet and 3rd bone players. Glad to see he recovered so we'll.
@davidwinn7214 жыл бұрын
SW, you made interesting observations....implication being that Bernie D. plays very loud on drums and David G. maybe not so much. .....at least in the context of what Brian Setzer and his band-mates were accustomed to. Do I have it right? I've seen Bernie perform live a few times with Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat boys.....man, an honor to hear him play in that orchestra....Gordon let Bernie go loud and let him improvise and exhibit the showmanship that he is/was so good at. Excellent drummers, both.
@stanw9094 жыл бұрын
@@davidwinn721 I should have said that Bernie played to Brian's taste. He once subbed on Ladd Macintosh's swing band and played at a more comfortable volume. No loud Guitar to compete with. Bernie is also a master percussionist playing mallets, tympani etc...

I was fortunate enough to catch Mr. Garibaldi at a guitar center drum clinic back in the mid 90’s here in south east Texas. Those ghost notes he plays still haunt me till this day! The true jam master!!!! He’s still rocking his signature snare.

No! Sadly enough. Rocco was replaced due to health issues for about 2 years ago. And of course it had to just a few weeks before I went to see them in Copenhagen. :-(

@@metaltimeyouscreamweroll3072 oh man, so sorry to hear that. He was such an amazing player. I saw them here in the Bay area back in the 80s and it was just mind bending how Garibaldi and Rocco could lock up. I also saw James Brown a number of times in that era and even his band couldn't lock like tower power. There was just something very special about that combination

I tip my hat to Dave for creating those iconic drum beats that forever will be Immortalized, just go back and play along with those groove and see if you can even come close for example “Oakland Stroke” most drummers that been around for over 50 years and still out there doing it bravo 👏 besides being a real cool guy.
