I did a ton of research and decided that due to the ability to store this dolly upright, the light weight, and afforadabilty this was the tow dolly for us. The main tow dollies I considered where Demco Kar Kaddy, Tow max, and Acme Eze tow dolly. We traveled around the country with this tow dolly pulling our minivan. As noted in the video, there are some pros and some cons. Hope this is helpful. If you enjoyed it please give it a thumbs up and subscribe. Thank you!! :)

Wow, watching your video was like deja vu all over again. :) Excellent job! We have the same model and have done 2 1/2 cross country trips towing a Chevy Equinox using the same splitter and magnetic tow lights. Yes, aligning the car properly can be very time consuming. Some days, you just can't seem to get it centered. Rarely does hookup take less than 1/2 hour and you jump in and out of the car a LOT. Laying on the pavement in 100+ degree heat is worse than when its freezing. It also sucks in the rain. Because it's such a hassle, we rarely unhook the car until we get to a destination. This prevents sight-seeing along the way and defeats much of the purpose of the trip. That, more than anything, is why we will probably switch to as economical a tow bar as we can find. You can get a complete bundle for around $2000 if you're willing to go with surge brakes and can do the labor yourself. And even though this is a "light" dolly, it can tweak your back if you're not careful. The tow bar weighs much less, which can only help on hills. Storage space is also a non-issue. Yes, the ends of the straps fraying is a major pain. I push mine through from the top with a flat head screw driver, then pull from the bottom when I can catch something that came through the slot. Yes, the ground wires for the lights vibrate off. We also lost an entire license plate and bracket due to vibration. They should provide a solid plate mount. Our brake wires (running under the frame) also worked their way loose and had to be tied/taped up. Yes, you need to be positive those strap hooks are fully vertical when everything is tightened up. We had a strap come off completely, most likely because of a missed inner hook that had snagged. Safety chains are a must! We use an extra long one in the middle, connected to the bolt that holds the ramps in place. We also swapped the original chains for some with clips on each end after a chain bounced out of the eyelet on one trip. The clips prevent this. You can save a step on the safety chains if you put some bar magnets from a hardware store on your control arms or find some other way to leave them in place. Tuck the chains up there when you disconnect and they stick. We never had them come loose (we used several magnets) while driving the car. Reach in and pull them through the eyelets without having to remount the chains on the control arms each time. Yes, the tires wear out after about 5,000 miles. Having a single spare, we bought one mounted replacement on Amazon while on the road. (No longer available). Now, with two rims to spare, we bought the next unmounted pair on Amazon for about $100. Mounting cost about $30. The trailer guy who mounted them said he thought the tire surfaces were being vulcanized because the surge brakes were being over-applied. I tend to agree with your turn analysis on the video. Either way, they wear out fast and the cost does add up. We also had a flat and were lucky we had a TPMS installed, a spare, a cordless impact driver and small floor jack with us. Swapping in the spare wasn't too bad under those conditions. Didn't unload the car from the dolly. Can't recommend the TPMS and enough tools enough! I noticed your ratchets appear to be mounted upside down. I mounted mine with the release handle up, as in the Acme demo video. The handle to get in the way of the ratchet locking properly if there is a lot of tension on the strap. I often have to keep some tension on the ratchet, then tap on the handle with a hammer to get the catch in all the way. Your way seems better!

Thanks for your hard work with cold hands making this video. I learned so much watching it. We just bought a 2020 model tow dolly and have not used it yet. You have such good suggestions for loading, strapping and chaining your vehicle. Great video!

I believe the reason why the doly is dragging when you turn is that the chains that you are attaching underneath the car are too short and not. Enough slack when that chain is taunt it is now pulling on the Dolly.

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion - I wish that was the case - in fact I purposely took some turns to watch it as I turn but the chains had plenty of length...

Thanks for your video. I actually just ordered the EZE-tow dolly but will be towing a much lighter car. We'll see how it works out for us, but your video gave me some good things to watch out for.

Good video, thanks for the explanation as you worked on securing the van. We're looking to buy one in the next few weeks. Would you still recommend buying an EZE Tow Dolly?

Hi Jim, Great question - I don't really have a strong opinion on it as I haven't tried other dollies. It worked for what we needed - I wanted something with brakes and the wider stance to allow me to tow the van. I actually sold the dolly because I now generally pull a trailer with toys instead. In hindsight for the amount of time we used the van we could have used UBER, rented a car, etc. It was not totally necessary for us to tow a vehicle. Hope this helps.

That was actually a big concern for me as the rear suspension is going in our van. I actually don’t think the back of the van ever scraped.

Had this car dolly and it's junk. Went through three tires caused by the front angle iron! If you are stopping in a turn the side wall hit the angle Iron damaging the sided walls.

Thankfully I have never had that problem with my tow dolly. So far I have put just shy of 9000 miles on it. My biggest complaint is that the trailer tires wear out so fast due to when I turn it slides. What trailer did you end up using?

Sold the trailer and the vw bug. Replaced it with a jeep and now tow 4 wheels down. Easy hookup and I don't have to lay on the ground hooking up the safety chains.

The tranny on the can or rv? The rv tranny seemed just fine. The van tranny wasn’t affected as the van is fwd and the rear tires just free spin. Hope this helps!

Does the rear of the van get scraped on the ground
@danypak
@danypak 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! I just logged in and saw your question. I was really worried about this as well as our van is older, the rear suspension is shot, and we have a tow hitch. Fortunately, the hitch did not scrape. However, we were not able to mount our bike rack to the back of the van as the bike rack would definitely scrape.

Hi, for all the research I did it I could not find an economical way of flat towing it. I wish I could though. Towing the van was nice as we could put 5 bicycles in the back (it was like bicycle Tetris) of the van.

@@danypak I also bought this dolly for the same reason. Now I see you can get a Ready Brute tow bar (with surge brake capability) bundled with everything you need for about the same $2000 the tow dolly cost me, provided you can handle a wrench enough to remove your front bumper cover and bolt on the baseplate. And if you're using this dolly, I'm pretty sure you can handle it.

I have always wondered if the odyssey could be towed 4 flat. I’ve heard of people doing it but was hesitant in doing it because Honda says not to. Let me know if you end up doing it and how it turns out.
