Damn good song by one of the best singer/songwriters of all-time. Anyone who disagrees, needs to get their head checked.

I knew there was a reason this was my favorite Townes song . My family’s from the same island as Nikos Kazantzakis, Crete! I’ve visited his grave in Ηράκλειο many times . Thought about getting the quote on his tombstone tattooed, translates to” I hope for nothing, I fear nothing , I’m free” gives a whole new meaning to Townes - Nothin now !! Rest in Power TVZ and Nikos

A masterpiece from the patron saint of pain. Townes, thanks for putting aside your own struggles to write this incredible music that helps ease the burden of ours.

Townes is gone, pass the word, never let his music die. The words are ever thing. If you can't love your self , how can you love the one your with. I think Townes loved others more than him self . So many are the same. Look

I went to an Oxfam store last week and saw a Townes Van Zandt Live CD for only 2€. Didn't really know this genius, but I knew he's Caleb Followill's favourite singer, so I bought it. This song is so incredible and my favourite, and his music is priceless. Thank you, rest in peace.

"being born is going blind / and bowing down a thousand times / to echoes strung / on pure temptation" might be the greatest lyric ever written, that is pure genius. I read it as both a comment on the necessary constraint of our own ignorance/lack of knowledges/wisdoms, and also as a nod to the inherent vices we share as humans, vices that "echo" and are "strung" through time, connecting us in a way.

My favourite lyric ever written is also from this song but it's Sorrow and solitude / these are the precious things / and the only words / that are worth remembering

I always thought it was: "...a thousand times / TACKLE'S strung...on pure temptation" As in, "bowing down"/biting like a fish... fishing tackle baited with "temptation". Hmm

There can be profound beauty and meaning in a life of sorrow and hopelessness, many have lived and do live a life that doesn't fit the social, "happy/content" expectations of the norm, in spite of best attempts to fit in. Townes lived that too, I reckon, and fearlessly captured this alternate reality perfectly in this poetry and music. Sharing that truth makes me feel less alone and helps me value my own road this time around..and friend, that's something. Love.

@barclayv82825 жыл бұрын
He was inspired by The Last Temptation of Christ, which is source material that many considered blasphemous. I'm not saying that TVZ didn't include some kind of "faith" in his life, but if merely "thinking about the faith" is source enough for your respect you could extend that same respect to Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and a whole slew of people who didn't or don't necessarily share a belief in said faith.

im not sure,but its the subtle nuances in a townes performance that make him great.each and every time there were small diffrences in sound or just the way his voice changed as he got older,somthing about each and every live performance that made it great.its an intangible that doesnt translate well in studio.i cherish every live version as a sacred jewel that can never be replaced.
@willong10006 жыл бұрын
The stuff he recorded during the last year, or so, of his life is simply painful to listen, and not in a good way like this session. That said, I think Townes' best and most soulful performances were from the mid-eighties to about 1993. Listen to an early version of "Two Girls" first; then listen to the version performed on "Solo Sessions" video and I think you'll agree. His young voice was sweeter and clearer; but his aging timing and emotive expression make all the difference.

This comes from a dvd titled "Townes Van Zandt houston 1988 a private concert". C 2004 varese Sarabande Records, Inc. 14 songs by Townes and a few other TVZ songs covered by others with commentary. The songs are recorded at a Houston hotel by his manager if i remember correctly. Guess it might still be available. I purchased my copy off the rack about 15 yrs ago at a B & Noble in Mississippi. I think I've heard all of the songs on KZfaq. A national treasure no doubt.

@@jameshaydel4203 Yes. Sorry but I need to correct you on point. He is not just a national treasure, but a global one at that. This music has its roots in the depths of the universal human predicament. Thanks for the comment brother!
