And as we have always promised you, we will take you through all the towns and cities in England and in the whole of the United Kingdom in order to inform you, educate some, and remind others about the key features of those towns. And as the scheme of things changes in those places, you can be sure that we will keep you up to speed. Today, our exploration has brought us to Blackpool. You are in for an interesting treat as we are discussing the history, culture, people, and population of the town. We would also tell you about the town’s crime rates and cost of living among others.
Where Is Blackpool?
We’re starting by telling you a bit about the location of the town of Blackpool. Please note that we’re not discussing the Blackpool urban area also called Greater Blackpool which is the area surrounding the town of Blackpool. We’re similarly not talking about other locations within and outside the United Kingdom known by the designation Blackpool such as Blackpool North, Blackpool North and Cleveleys, Blackpool North and Fleetwood, Blackpool South, the Blackpool in Devon, or the one in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
We’re primarily concerned about Blackpool which is a seaside resort in Lancashire. It is located on the northwest coast of England. This town is the main settlement within its borough also called Blackpool. Blackpool is by the Irish Sea, that is, between the Ribble and Wyre rivers. It is situated 27 miles north of Liverpool and 40 miles northwest of Manchester.
The History
The history of Blackpool dates back to time immemorial. Archeologists have given us reasons to believe that the town had been settled since around 11,000-13,000 years ago, basing their conclusion on the Carleton Elk skeleton of 1970 which they say had apparently been hunted by earlier settlers around that time. Romans were also said to have lived there around 80 AD.
During the Medieval Times, Blackpool also featured in history, though prominently. The most acceptable recorded history of the town around that time was found in the famous Domesday Book of 1086. Before and during the arrival of the industrial revolution, the town made some marks in history. It was involved in struggles during some of the English civil wars.
The arrival of the railway in 1846 was one of the most significant events in its early growth. It opened a route to Blackpool from Poulton running on the main Preston and Wyre Joint Railway line plying Preston and Fleetwood. The same can be said of the town’s pioneering the use of electric power in 1879. It was the first municipality to have electric street lighting in the world.
The history of Blackpool in the 20th century is replete with events that are still felt up till now. In 1911, the famous Carnegie Free Library in the Grundy Art Gallery located on Queen Street opened. The much-visited Blackpool illuminations were switched on for the first time in 1912. Fast-forward to 1986, the Sandcastle Waterpark was built. The Blackpool Sea Life Center which houses over 2,500 endangered aquatic animals and species was opened in 1990.
The town took its name from a stream called Spen Dyke. It was carrying water darkened by peat with Marton Mere to the sea as its source. The stream called ‘le pull’ was flowing to a moss. It gradually dried out and became habitable for man. People from that area were called those from the area with a black pool. The name Blackpool thus came to stay and stuck.
