Three days after the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, on Feb. 3, 2023, officials - with the EPA’s blessing - burned 116,000 gallons of vinyl chloride into the region.
Now, for the first time since the incident, new data reveals just how far those toxins spread.
Within minutes, a mushroom-like cloud of toxins billowed into the atmosphere and smothered the area.

It is the Republicans who deregulate everything and want to get rid of the EPA. Republican era deregulation paid for by big corporations paying for the legislation is what got is here. The mobilization of multiple governmental agents with expertise-which the GOP plans to dismantle at the at the order of their corporate donors- is what limited the damage and stayed on the job over a year after this mess. Yet conveniently they throw the EPA under the bus, as if they set the fire. And by no way am I idealized a huge lumbering government bureaucracy.

You know it was Norfolk Southern who somehow led the entire cleanup, and probably threatened legal action against the town if they didn't comply. I also wouldn't doubt it they somehow threatened the jobs of the local officials, or the officials are also in NS's pockets. I have a suspicion that most towns who have a major railroad going through them are paid off for these exact incidents. I live in a town where CN rolls right through, and we have also had very minor derailments here. If something like this happened in my town, I wouldn't doubt it if they would implement the same response.

I've noticed here in central Maine that the last year my asthma has been horrendous out of the blue, and I only have sports asthma. I can't sleep at night without constant wheezing and coughing, even if I'm staying in someone else's house or a hotel. I'm 33 and overall healthy, and this has never happened. I was blowing it off as allergies from pollen and humidity, but that doesn't make sense in the cold months. I wonder if there is any kind of bloodwork to detect levels of chloride in someone's system? If there is, I'll be the first around here to sign up, and I hate being stabbed and having blood taken. I'll add that my sports asthma wasn't even this bad when I had covid 2-3 times in the past 4 years.

I was totally outraged by how both disasters were handled by ALL the government agencies who were involved, but even more livid about how the current administration blatantly disregarded their duty and responsibility to addressing them appropriately and effectively.. it seems to me that they can't be bothered to care about crises we have here because there's no money in it for them like there obviously is in other countries.. smh.. greed for money/power and depraved corruption will become the ultimate collapse and downfall of our entire nation, and eventually the world, if it's allowed to continue😔🥺😳😤😧

Nuclear waste is also transported by rail too in case anyone has forgotten. It could have ended much much worse. So YES rail safety protection & toxic disaster protocols need to be strengthened in a HUGE WAY. And residents along those rail lines should have the RIGHT to know what is being transported across country, through states , cities, towns, neighbourhoods , & backyards. & I would even Go so far as to call for & support everyone having a voice Or vote in the matter of approving or disapproving dangerous cargo, especially in the the amounts that effect the health and well being of the entire nation - our children - & their children's children. Especially after this massive failure to protect the nation.

@@SizzleMoonSong Nuclear waste would have been a far better outcome. It would have just been a couple hundred virtually harmless concrete blocks that would need to be picked up. @@aaronkoning7255 you obviously don't know much about nuclear waste or how it is shipped... It is so radioactive it can be easily tracked by satellites in space , even over 30 years ago...
