I have my Toy Hauler conversion about 95% completed except for some interior trim. This video gives a complete walkaround of the features I have incorporated into my build. In the future, I hope to add solar panels to the roof and lithium batteries, but that will be for future videos.

Good build, my last trailer had a roof in three sections and after a couple of years it started leaking, first in one spot then another. It eventually ruined the interior and caused mold. My new trailer like yours has a one piece roof that curves at the sides. Looking at all the builds with the fancy interiors no one ever mentions the roof, like your house it is the most important, but people concentrate on interior and think little about the exterior quality.

Fantastic and innovative ideas and great workmanship! One thing that came to mind when you mentioned the interior security latches for the ramp so that someone couldn't open the ramp while you're inside without having to lock the exterior latches. There's nothing to prevent the exterior doors from locked from some pranksters walking by while you're inside, leaving you to see how much fun using the emergency window actually is. I couldn't tell if you had addressed that somehow by locking those latches in the open position to prevent this while inside the trailer.
@johntalbert8227
@johntalbert8227 3 жыл бұрын
My reasoning for the interior locks was mainly for securing the trailer. Locks are so easy to cut off using bolt cutters or a grinder cut off wheel. They would have one more level to deal with. Then again they can just cut off the lock on the entry door, or just cut thru the wall of the trailer with a saws-all! With the interior locks, I have 3 possible methods of exit, the window, front door, or rear cargo door. Some people put latches on the outside where they can lock the bars open, but I won't worry about that as I have the emergency window as last resort.

That's really nice. Might need to cover that roof with about 1.5kw of solar for that a/c. I notice the sides & front are one piece sheets of aluminum also - more expensive than cheaper trailers, but no leaks & peace of mind. Very nice ceiling, cabinets & shower!! Ingenious & simple inside lock for the ramp, too. Love to watch all these build videos for the ideas. I'm a little surprised you didn't (yet?) insulate the floor, especially in that part of the country. I'm subscribing in case you post a video on the solar install.

Despite your precautions, propane cylinder in an enclosed space is a terrible idea. Supply valves can leak, pressure safety valves can leak, etc. Just check out industry standards for storing flammable cylinders. There is a reason for them. Cheers.

I have 1/1/2" of blue foam insulation in the walls and ceiling. The 9000 works fine so far. The 9000 is great because it is only 110 volts and uses a 15 amp circuit. For my small trailer, the 9000 provides plenty of cooling and heating.

I only cut one stud. Just above the window is the top of the frame with a double layer of 1 inch square tube. The distance between studs was only 32 inches after the cut. I have .40 aluminum skin. I figured that it would be silly to add a steel frame around the window. There is also the interior plywood walls. It is very sturdy with just the window frame in.

As far as the wt, I don't have any issues with my build, I have plenty of nose wt to compensate for the bikes. @johntalbert8227

welded small mounts to the frame. mount is just a square of strap 1/8" metal with a hole drilled in it. Then a small 1 1/2" steel rod about 1/4" dia put in hole and welded to the flat piece. This was then welded to the trailer frame. The bottom of the actuator has a mounting point which is a hole that just slides over the steel rod I have on the wall, then a cotter pin put in place to hold it from sliding off. Works great.

Very simple. Just lay a piece of plywood on the roof and sit, stand on it while installing items on the roof. With the steel frame of the trailer only 16" on center, it is a very strong roof. Just not directly between ribs with concentrated weight like a person standing on the aluminum roof. 1/2" ply will be plenty strong to work on the roof. Good luck.

Only a problem when going all the way to the top and the two actuator side hits the ceiling first. Going down is no problem as there are limiter switches that shut them down automatically. No big deal. If I had to do it again, I would use 4.

Nice clean build. Couple of questions: -how is water splashing with the shower? (Does water go out to floor?) -what would you estimate the over all weight, and tounge weight to be? -what price was the trailer? Thank you

No splashing of water. There is about a 3 inch lip that keeps the shower curtain inside, works pretty good. Have not weighed the trailer yet. On my trip to WV we had the trailer loaded with my Himalayan which weighs a little over 400 lbs and a ktm 690 which is 360. Bunch of gear up front. When dropping the tongue on the hitch the truck barely dropped maybe an inch at most. On the highway never any swaying, even with big rigs blowing by us. Super stable. I have a super duty F250 4x4 four-door so the trailer doesn't faze it. Trailer was $5400, afraid to total up the receipts for all the upgrades.

@@johntalbert8227 Well thank you so much for the answers and details. I am curious about weight because of a smaller town vehicle I have. I don't want to almost double the trailer cost, (guessing), to go with aluminum (I know there are other benefits as well to aluminum). My plan is to try this conversion out, see what I like in the design and not, and then start a business building these customer campers for people! I'm in NC, so fingers crossed there will be a person to kick start this with an order. I am a civil engineering cad designer, so planning to use my experience to produce high quality builds.

@@johntalbert8227 It's very hard to believe you only paid $5400 for it. I see you have a 6 inch frame with the front corners covered, 7 foot wide, and the one piece aluminum roof, with .040 thickness. It appears to be higher that a 6'3" interior height. I've been looking to custom order a 6'x14' tandem, with similar upgrades , but 4" frame, .030, and standard 6'3" interior ceiling height That's a great price.

Actually, I have no idea where I got that hat. Don't own any snap on tools! I think my Son gave it to me, and he doesn't have any either. I'm more of a Harbor Freight guy. Took me a minute to figure out what you meant. I guess if you buy $300 worth of tools from the snap-on guy he gives you a hat? John - you have inspired me to go ahead and do a trailer build. I ordered my Reed Trailer and hope to have it soon. I think I figured out the 2 - 20 gallon fresh water tanks www.classacustoms.com/Under-Mount-Style-Water-Tank-20-Gallon_p_252.html. I was hoping to go with a larger gray tank , 30 gallon, but it seems to be limited with the spacing on the supports. Has the 20 gallon been big enough? I plan to elevate the front bathroom area - I have ordered the trailer with the side door further to the back - plan to make it a little larger. Can you give me any pointers on how you plumbed the two fresh water tanks. One fill pipe that has a tee and goes to both - same with the vents? Thanks again for your documentation on the build.
@johntalbert8227
@johntalbert8227 3 жыл бұрын
Just saw this Jim: 20 gal is very limited really. If I had to do it over, I would cut out some frame and reweld to allow a bigger tank. I have a 1 1/2" line that goes from tank to tank so when filling one it transfers over to the second tank as the first one fills. The vents are connected with a tee to both tanks.

@@johntalbert8227 John - I did order the three 20's from Class A Customs - trailer is getting close - hope to pick it up in the next week. So, you think the gray 20 is too small - what about the 40 gallons of fresh water - is that enough? With you suggestion - I will either use the 3rd 20 for additional fresh or just use the two and go for a larger gray tank - do you think 30 gallons on the gray would be a help? I like your smaller solar but I am an electrician by trade and I just finished my solar that will be installed in the rig. I have a 48V system and am using a Growatt SPF 3000TL LVM for the brain. I built the 16 cell 272 Ah battery this weekend - it is massive. The BMS has the cells all in balance. I plan to place it on the drivers side of the trailer to counter balance what I have on the driver side. I'm learning about this KZfaq - I might put some of my experiences on line. Thanks again for your work on posting - I do like a lot of your ideas.

@@coachgym You can always use more of everything, but then you start getting heavy, expensive and I wanted to keep things small and light. I just have grey water, so I can leak some out on the ground slowly. I only use it to shower, no food particles or stuff that would attract animals. Sounds like a hell of a battery use built!
