Realtime and time lapse footage of splitting 12" rounds and knotted white oak this thing works well. I have split up to 12-14" rounds as long as they aren't TOO tough.

Three things. First put that splitter on a stand so you can work standing up..presently you are a young man, but when you get older, like me at 70, your back will thank you! Second, take it to a welding shop and get a taller wedge put on it, that way you will split through the center of those larger logs! And lastly, put a table the right height to hold those pieces to be resplit, so they don't drop on the ground. Also saves your back!

I got one used a couple weeks ago ($225) and I love it. My record is 25 inch diameter ash. Get some gloves though, you are right that if your not committed when you move the handle it can jerk and wack your knuckles against a large diameter, long log. Also expect to add a couple of washers at the front of the black guide rails. The rails can eventual bend slightly and then the ram does not always retract. The thickness of a couple washers adds enough clearance. The trade off on the size is that, although easy to store, working that close to the ground is murder on the back. I set mine on my trailer when in use, but a foot higher would be even nicer.

I purchased a low cost 25 ton MTD hydraulic splitter from the Home Depot on sale about 18 years ago for maybe 750.00 and it has run great over that time. I pretty much only burn oak and I have split logs over 32 inches in diameter. I split about four to six cord a season and I have a few friends that also use it to cut a similar amount. That unit does look painful to use. I would be concerned the piston would just release and take off my hand. I like how much control I have with my unit. Also my splitter has no issue splitting the wood. I think I would rather use an ax. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

I agree with some of the other commentators: you really need to put it up on something to save your back! Working sitting down or kneeling or bending over all the time will kill ya! I've got the similar Timber Champ and I mounted it to a sawhorse (legs trimmed to get it at the right height for me) and attached a table flush at the exit end to catch the split logs. This has been a lifesaver and makes the unit a joy to use: quick & efficient. (Not perfect, but much easier!) I've split some really tough stuff (bodark) that I couldn't get a hand maul thru to save my life. These kinetics are the way to go for sure, but my next one will be a bigger model (will save up...) ☺

Cool! At the very first attempt at splitting on this video it saved me the $450 I was thinking of spending on this. I'll keep my electric Harbor Freight splitter. In the end, it's just as fast as this one. If you have to keep going back two or three times on almost every piece of wood to split it, it's not better than the hydraulic splitters.

An electric motor is no joke when it comes to power.Try out a 3hp electric chainsaw sometime and you will see the difference in torque between electric and gas motors.These little splitters would not be practical for a commercial firewood cutter,or a homeowner that burns 30 loads a year,but for someone using 3-4 cords a year,this is ideal.I have an older Timber Champ 7 in my basement where my wood furnace is.That little splitter is ideal when the rain is falling or the wind chill is -20.I just plug it in and split what I need .Usually about 3 days and nights worth of wood in about 15 minutes.

What was supposed to be the last 3-5 minutes of this video you'd probably enjoy (the racking I store my wood on), but the battery died unfortunately. Basically though, I use pallet racking beams laid on cinder blocks to keep everything off the ground. I got the beams for about 50 cents each since they are an oddball size, so each rick worth of wood the racking costs me about $6 for and it will hold it stacked as high as I want. My driveway is about 500' long at the end of a half mile private road that serves about 10 houses. My neighbor usually plows our half (the common half gets enough traffic to squish the snow down usually, but not always). But, when he is gone or when I need to be one of the first ones gone I could have a half mile or more to do. There are a couple times where I've snow blowed the full half mile+. Not sure if you've seen my other videos, but I have a snowblower to go on this tractor and it works like a champ. I took it out today just for fun (and to make sure the plows didn't bury the entrance to our road since I was expecting a package) and got the deep parts where the cars hadn't yet been. I did have to slow down to probably 3-4 mph (it was fairly deep, but pretty powdery and soft still because of the cold). I've been wanting to get it on video, but here hasn't been a single BIG snow since I got the snowblower. Still, even with 4-6" its nice making one trip down and one trip back and having 8-9' cleared out. With a 24" snowblower and 6" of overlap it would be about 3 round trips at a much slower speed to do the same.

I have the exact same splitter, and have split lots of wood with it. Only problem I have had so far is it didn't always want to retract, I just added a cheap bungee cord and has been working great. It takes a little getting use to and to learn little tricks. The one thing I don't like about it is you just jam the gears together go make it extend (although it's not been a problem so far), I wish they would've design a clutch system instead.

Sorry for the late reply, somehow I stopped getting notifications. I find the lack of retraction is usually due to jammed up debris so I clear it as I go. I also, if I remember right, bent out the sides to provide clearance (but I could be misremembering this)

@HandfulOfTranquility
@HandfulOfTranquility 6 жыл бұрын
I can tell you with certainty that this splitter would NOT work for that. The opening is 18" and it needs at least an inch for the ram to engage. Now, it can split pieces longer than 17" by putting them upright, but if its then 20" diameter it wouldnt fit that way either. I did easily split some 8" diameter pieces that were 18" long by standing them upright and splitting them through the side of the log. If 10-12" diameter is the size of teh branches of trees you are taking down you probably want a bigger splitter. My neighbor has a 30 ton processor so for larger trees I bring them over to his place to split, the smaller stuff I can take care of. During winter I keep this in the basement and use it to re-split pieces that didn't get split enough before or to split a log into a pile of kindling as needed.

I guess it's all right but no matter what claims DR makes about how tough the gears are, multiple strokes have to be hard on them. I'll keep my old worn out hydraulic.That wood was straight grained enough so that splitter ought to pop it with no trouble. I doubt if mine would get up to 500 lbs. on the pressure gauge. I'd say a 6 or 8 inch stuff would be fine and kindling would be really good. Electric is good. Just depends on what you're doing and what you have. Good video!

@@HandfulOfTranquility Hi. Yes they did. After pulling it apart, I found one of the flywheels was snapped. They sent me a new flywheel, although the instructions on how to remove and install were hinky (they install is directional, and it is easy to try to install it backwards), it is now good as new. I had the 2 year warranty so everything was covered.
@scottnunya2441

Another update: The new flywheel lasted about 1/2 cord before become loose and wobbly. The set screw was missing and the wheel was twisting around the keyway. Another call, and a week and a half later, another wheel arrives. I installed it correctly, really torqueing down on the set screw which is difficult as you need a very long hex wrench to this so you can't put a lot of torque on it (I snapped the end off mine in the process). Since then, it has run like a champ. DR no longer sells this unit if that tells you anything. I wouldn't buy this unit again if I had the choice.

It is holding up fine. However, I mostly use it in the basement to re-split pieces I find too large and dont quite fit the stove. I love having it in the basement for that use! Worth the price for that use for me? No, probably not. Worth the price as a primary splitter? No, probably not, I'd probably get a used gas splitter. But if you do have a need for an indoor electric splitter it is pretty handy. It takes no time to fire up, split a few pieces into kindling or just from a way too thick piece into 2 or 3 decent sized pieces. I dont know that I'd buy it again, but I also wouldnt sell it. I would vastly prefer it over a little electric hydraulic unit for sure, I just wouldnt prefer it over a gas splitter as a primary splitter. However, check my recent videos where I am using another DR Power splitter. That unit I am a big fan of! Its fast due to two way wedge, uses my tractor that I know will fire up when I want, and can be adjusted for height. My only gripe is it isnt quick hitch compatible, though I will be changing that at some point.

i really hate to diss DR, but I have a k10 and have had a great deal of trouble with it. Lately DR doesn't answer their phones and I need parts. I have even gone through Generac, an affiliate of DR and been unsuccessful. I bought my k10 in October of 2017, I purchased an additional 3 year warranty, My first problem was a broken flywheel. I ordered and got a new one on warranty. next another flywheel, plus the pinon gear shaft. Next recently the electric motor flamed out. Finally last week the flywheel broke again. They always break right at the point of the setscrew. crack right down the center. I suspect the metric (very short) shaft key and cast iron flywheels contribute to these failures. I also admit that the oak and elm I usually split would put a strain on most smaller splitters. I think I would probably not buy another DR product since My small farm can;t tolerated long waits for parts. I have several DR products and have had good luck with them but the K10 seems a bit undersized and not as strong as it should be for the size and price.

To you perhaps; obviously to me it was. The opening is 18" and its meant for 16" pieces (though it certainly handles 17" pieces). That timber champ says 18", is that marketing BS too? Does it have a 19-20" opening and can handle 18" pieces or does it have an 18" opening and it is nigh impossible to actually operate? Not sure, though I had never heard of them so thank you for bringing them to everybody's attention. Still, the 16"-17" capacity handles all 80% of people need. I have a wood furnace that can handle 20" pieces down the length, but it only handles 16" pieces across the width. I typically load 2 long pieces down the length, then 4 16" pieces across the width, then 3 more 16" pieces down the length on top (don't want too long there since it doesn't catch the re-burners if its too long). I was happy to get something that can do 80-90% of what I needed it to do (though I certainly would have been MORE happy to pay the same amount and get another couple inches of capacity!). While mine may or may not be maide domestically the COMPANY is USA and I knew what level of service I would get from them (and they lived up to it!). I'd have thought a bit more over some of the other options. The other thing that makes me happy to get this one despite the 16" limitation is that at some point I'll make or buy something much larger that can be driven by the tractor that can handle larger pieces and then this will be used when I want smaller pieces or kindling (I use it every 2 days or so in my basement when I want smaller pieces than what I originally stored).

Handful of Tranquility oh, good to know that the opening is 18" and not 16" that I thought it was. I cut my wood at 16" but pieces could be up to 18" long sometimes. I don't own a kinetic splitter but from my research. I think lumber champ has a longer opening. Maybe 20". Also can a log be split standing on the flat round side. Let say you have a 20" long and 12" round log. Could you split it with the log standing? Just curious. Thanks
@HandfulOfTranquility
@HandfulOfTranquility 6 жыл бұрын
Thats a great question and not one I had thought of. I just took a 16" long 10" or so round and split it sideways. Its unsplit but it was cut I THINK last year so its somewhat seasoned (splits easier). It took 3 or 4 whacks to go through (and you need a shorter piece too because these kinetic splitters the ram only goes to about 3-4" from the wedge to keep you from chopping your hand off), but it went through. Then I flipped it over and went through the crotch and 2 or 3 more whacks and it was split in half. Its would be a bit tippy with 20", but I think it'll work. Thanks for the great idea, now some of my 19-20" pieces that are a bit too long while still inside and only as needed (I don't want to split it all because I may want a large piece for a long burn, or I may want smaller for faster heat).

18 inch is hard on the machine and your hands so I would not do it often. I cut my wood planning to rent a full size splitter so I have alot of long pieces this year. Then I bought this splitter, so I've done pieces I've had to pound in place with my fist. Yes, it does still split them but it really jerks the handle against your hand when you engage the lever. In general it's probably better to trim a couple of inches off with the chain saw. Those 2 inch blocks a kind a nice to use when a piece is at the end of the tray and still pinched on the wedge. Place the 2" round on and it knocks it off of the wedge. I've done oddly cut pieces sideways and it works but i doubt if it would work on a large diameter or long piece.

How long do you want to keep your back in one piece dude? Get off your knees for fuck's sake...Btw, use it in this fashion for 6 months and the rack and pinion will be gone, along with some of the barings.. Talking from experience here...
