He's a young collector. I don't think he understood in a sense of where some of his stuff was because ebay prices can be tricky and I think the modern carded figure you already gave him each $2-3 more than what I would have and if was up to me, I would have kept those modern stuff because its too early and the market has yet to grow for those.

I think some collectors don't realize, that if they sell on Ebay you are dealing with shipping costs (easily $10-15+ per item), ebay fees 13%, and then...drumroll please.... INCOME TAX which is like 25%? Add it all up, and you are easily losing 40% from an Ebay sale over taking cash from a shop.

As a collector, if you want more for your collection, never sell to a toy store. They have to make money as well. It is best to be a vendor at your local events or sell on your local social media club. On the bright side, I'm glad everyone was happy.

Exactly! Those guys will under value everything you have present and try to sell it for more. I have had to call out a few stores for doing this. I went in and bruised what they had to see if they are selling similar items I had and for how much. I then went in and asked them how much they would take for a few vintage SW and vintage Mego figures, all carded and unopened. The price they gave me was ridiculous. When I showed them what they were selling less pristine figures for that were wrapped in plastic bags, one store owner got upset and told me he doesn’t want me in his shop anymore. I told him he doesn’t need to try to rip people off thinking we don’t know the value of what we have. The other guy tried to play it off and said he didn’t even realize he had some of those items and tried to change his offer. I refused and walked out. I stick to selling things on Ebay.

There is a huge difference between selling to an end-buyer collector vs a reseller/store. The reseller/store is going to resell, its their whole point, so they are ALWAYS going to give you less. Otherwise, they wouldnt even exist. If you want max money, you gotta sell privately to the actual collectors wantingt the stuff. There's no bigger scoundrel in the universe than a comic book store employee. When you buy the shit, it is all limited edition and probably the last one left in the universe, so naturally it has to be priced more than the price guide in less than perfect condition. Then when you go to sell, it isn't worth the box it came in.

I mean. That's just how it goes with any store that buys your stuff. You're working with margins in a very niche market space. If he wanted 1800, he'd probably have to piece it out on ebay. And that's a lot of money spent on shipping, etc. Things generally are not worth what you pay for them, even more rarely worth more than what you paid for them unless they become in demand + sufficient amount of time has passed.

They gotta pay rent and employees. Stock that doesn't move is literally money lost, as a lot of them have business loans that can be paid off if they kept minimal inventory. They're usually shitty because they're socially awkward AND stressed, so they come across in the worst way possible. Being in the financial industry for many years, it's the ones who hide behind a smile who are the true scoundrels. It's the unknowns you don't know about that gives you the biggest losses. @@tylerk3616not at all, other than the really rare minifigs that most collectors wouldn't have. Your average retired UCS sets has bad ROI. The best ROI is speed champions followed by the high in demand city stuff like trains. If you want high value sets, then it's either pop culture tie ins like stranger things, LOTR, Harry potter, or modulars, especially the short lived ones like brick bank. Too much star wars releases, and even despite the poor ROI, feels like a massive crash will come soon, especially as the franchise looks to be on its way down.

you cannot go to a store ; dump all your stuff there and expect a super high price ! as a seller you do ZERO work ; you just take all your stuff and dump it on the store in one take . then the store has to do ALL THE WORK ; sort and price everything , clean , seek customers , open the store every morning hoping for buyers , some items will sell quick , most items will be in the store for a very long time , some items will never move ; all the risk , energy , time , work is for the store to invest . result = you get a low amount logically .

There are too many people that started collecting those, and then the market got flooded with online auctions like eBay. Back when you could only find stuff at a local auction, comic store, or comic-con, they were worth a lot more.

How is the shop scamming him? The shop has to part with a chunk of cash when buying collections. They are getting pieces that may sit for over a year before selling. That means liquidity tied up in inventory and not being spent on something else that will sell more quickly. No one is required to sell their collection. But, if they want fast money without taking on any of the risk associated with actually selling all of it, it comes with a discount. The discount gets higher are items get more expensive unless they are in the middle of a massive market run up like 2020 when everything sold. But, when the bottom fell out of that, a lot of stores went under by paying too much in for their inventory.

No hard feelings on either side. A lot of times maybe the market was taking a dip or they just knew what they could sale vs already had 20 of in the backroom. Knowing about what I expected coming in always helped because they were able to explain why it wasn't worth that (at least to them). It helped me adjust expectations next time I came by for a trade.

Completely disagree, the fan newer fans have destroyed it. I have listened to tons of people bitch and all I hear is people complaining because not all the original characters are in every movie. People get older and pass away or killed. So yeah the characters must change. George Lucas gave us a world to creat from for ever, but you can't keep telling the same story over and over and I think that's what today's fans want. I will admit I didn't like The Last Jedi and I think they need to give us the full version of the Rise of Skywalker and what we was supposed to see. Fans of anything today are toxic, y'all dog the hel out of everything but still spend your money to go see. All I'm going to say is if not for Disney we wouldn't have Star Wars at all anymore. Again the problem today is just the society itself, if people have to think about something for themselves it's stupid and don't make sense, and hate on it. Yet you explain everything step by step and they don't have to think, they love it. I call it the Dumbing Down of America.
