Ryan and Tony at Toylanta 2024 | Toy Federation x Knowhere Toys | Vintage Toy Show Highlights
Welcome back to the Toy Federation KZfaq channel! In this exciting video, join Ryan from Toy Federation and Tony from Knowhere Toys as they take you on an exclusive journey through Toylanta 2024, the annual vintage toy show held in Atlanta. This event is a paradise for toy enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone with a love for vintage treasures.
The History of Toylanta
Toylanta, formerly known as Joelanta, started in 2000 as a modest gathering for GI Joe collectors. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the premier vintage toy conventions in the United States, attracting fans from all over the globe. Renamed Toylanta to reflect its broader focus on various toy lines, the event now spans an entire weekend, featuring a bustling marketplace, panels, cosplay contests, and exclusive previews. Toylanta is not just a convention; it’s a celebration of nostalgia, creativity, and community, bringing together people who share a passion for toys from all eras.
Ryan and Tony’s Booth Highlights
In this year’s edition, Ryan and Tony have outdone themselves with an incredible booth filled with rare and sought-after items. Let's dive into some of the standout pieces you'll see in our video:
Kenner Indiana Jones Well of Souls Playset
One of the highlights at their booth is the legendary Kenner Indiana Jones Well of Souls playset. Released in 1982, this playset captures the thrilling moment from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" where Indiana Jones retrieves the Ark of the Covenant. The set includes a variety of accessories, such as snakes, the Ark, and a detailed backdrop. It’s a beloved piece among Indiana Jones fans and toy collectors for its intricate design and playability. The Well of Souls playset has become increasingly rare over the years, making it a prized possession for any collection.
Transformers Toys
Another major attraction at their booth is the range of Transformers toys. From Generation 1 classics to more recent releases, Ryan and Tony have a selection that will make any Transformers fan’s heart skip a beat. Among these is the original Optimus Prime, Megatron, and the Dinobots. These iconic figures not only defined a generation but also remain timeless pieces of toy engineering and design. Transformers, with their ability to change from vehicle to robot, revolutionized the toy industry and continue to be a staple in the world of collectibles.
Super Powers Collection Iceman
Collectors know that some figures from the Super Powers Collection are harder to find than others. The Iceman figure is one of these rarities. Produced by Kenner in the mid-1980s, the Super Powers Collection was a line of action figures based on DC Comics characters. The Iceman figure, in particular, stands out due to its limited production and distribution. Featuring excellent articulation and a design that closely resembles its comic book counterpart, Iceman is a must-have for any serious DC toy collector. Discovering one in mint condition, especially with its original packaging, is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Why Toylanta is a Must-Visit
Toylanta isn’t just about the toys; it’s about the people and the experiences. The convention offers a unique opportunity to meet fellow collectors, share stories, and discover the rich history behind each toy. Panels and discussions with industry experts provide valuable insights into the world of toy collecting. Cosplayers bring beloved characters to life, adding a vibrant atmosphere to the event. Whether you're a seasoned collector or new to the hobby, Toylanta has something for everyone.

Your He-Man art: Those look like the black line overlays and blue line under painting of art by one of the original MOTU illustrators, Errol McCarthy. If you wanted a painted look, this was the process. Print the original line art on acetate, then print that same lineart in a light blue on art board. They would do all the coloring on the artboard and marry the two layers together for photography (thus the registration marks on the clear overlay). Very cool pieces. Art by McCarthy, Earl Norem, and Fredo Alcala claim top dollar. Great pieces! Edit: they might be by artist Fred Carillo also. Another early MOTU artist.

I recognize some of those images in that internal catalogue booklet you showed at the end. They were used for a set of stickers that my brother and I had as kids. They were puffy stickers with kind of a plastic surface to them. There were some really neat sticker sets for all the toy lines back in the day. Some good memories. 😁

Reproducing on software is fine as long as the book makes it clear the photo isn't 100% a photo. Bc if something isn't quite right with it but the image then goes on to be relied on as 100% accurate reference material... that's not good for anybody.

I remember you saying you didn't understand the hate towards WhatNot. My reason, as a seller myself, is they upped all their fees to a point where unless you're a big seller such as yourself, there's zero chance to make money unless I raise my prices. But I can't do that because the bigger people and stores with direct wholesale access can keep their prices much lower. It's for this reason I had to stop selling on WhatNot. They forgot about the people who made their site work, and went with the fast money.

It does, but it also keeps things at that condition so accidental damage doesn't happen. It also gives a set condition on things (whether you agree or not) because I've seen comics graded way differently then they probably are. So it can be peace of mind.

What’s peoples opinions on collectibility of ‘vintage toys’ late 70’s, 80’s, 90’s in the far future? Do you think the next generations will find passion for these or will the nostalgia die out this us ? Some franchises like transformers & turtles will have Place due to the franchise’s still going strong today but will GI JOE, mask, mightymax, street sharks, MOTU countless other toy lines still carry a premium in 20 years or will the end up like tin toys or beanie babies?
@ichigen511
@ichigen511 5 күн бұрын
It's a fascinating question I don't think anyone can fortell but I feel like since the 70s there was so much hype for those toys that grandparents and great grandparents will be keeping the hype going and grandchildren and great grandchildren will still want to get a piece of history. I have a hard tie thinking Star Wars toys will ever be left in the dust but also to your point Star Wars is still alive because of Disney and will probably be around for hundreds of years. Who knows!

Do you collect toys your parents and grandparents had?
@ichigen511

@@brianrvd No. But my comment was pointing out that the 70s was when toys became mainstream madness. There has NEVER been a toy line more obsessed on then Star Wars in 1977 and 1978. Christmas 1978 was the greatest Christmas of all time. Millenium Flacon, Tie Fighters. X-Wings, Sromtroopers, etc, etc, etc. The begining of the madness was 1978.
