My 5th gen 4runner had been having a recurring problem going into limp mode soon after start up. I could clear the codes and it would then run fine. While I had the truck in for and oil change and alignment I went ahead and let them run the codes. I had multiple codes for the secondary air injection system (SAIS). My valves were stuck closed and the fix was quoted as a $2,000 repair for parts and labor. WOW. Intent to just fix it myself I went to pick my runner up and the service manager told me about the bypass. He used the Hewitt bypass on his Tundra and he explained it was quick and much cheaper than the OEM replacement. So, I went to Hewitt Technologies and purchased their gen 2 unit for my 4runner. It is quick and only took about 30 minutes or so to install. I encountered a little problem when starting my truck up after the install and it took me a few days to get it just right. I called Hewitt and worked through my issues and determined it had to be something simple or my valves were bad (which would have required a Pressure switch option). However, I have a relay that I use for a switched ground that gets its power from an add a circuit from the under hood fuse box, which just happens to be the fuel injector fuse. With the vehicle now happy and starting and running right it took a few minutes for the computer to sync with the bypass and all is currently good. Their customer service is as good as their product.

Have a gen 1 Sequoia that had similar issues with AIP errors. Bought a Hewitt bypass and its fixed everything. Been about 3 years with no issues. Hewitt bypass is legit.

I had the P2441 on bank one (passenger side) in my 2017 4runner, this IS 100% covered by the manufacturer emission systems warranty as long as your vehicle is under 8 years of age and or under 80,000 miles which ever comes first, the dealer wont tell you that. I just made it by 2 months before my warranty expired and started throwing this code. I never had any issues before this or after the dealership repair, all is good for 2 years now and counting. I guess I got lucky with this issues timing. The warranty's wording online is very vague and doesnt specify which parts are covered under the emissions system warranty, also quick tip if you run a 1 inch UNI or a K&N filter on the pump it will void your warranty 100% (switch back to stock filter b4 bringing it to the dealer). And make sure they dont try to charge you for the diagnostics fee of $150 an hour shop rate, that is all included in the warranty coverage. There wasnt much info out there on the warranty specifics and the dealership wont tell you shit until you bring it into them and then they can try to weasel more money out of people. Hope this helps.

I now have around 1500 miles since install and it works flawlessly. Its an easy, effective way to save 3000.

Thanks for the detailed video! I'm a 1-and-done guy so much so, that I think I would just pay the cost for the OEM repair. I can't take that long to not be able to count on my 2016 4Runner 100% (ok maybe 99%). But if I ever have an issue with this and want to DIY the repair, I know where to go for the part!

Glad to help. My truck only has 50k miles so I was a little shocked at how quick this failed. The service manager said that the SAIS is the only Achilles heal on these. Once i tracked down my unrelated issue it has been flawless.

Great installation video. I noticed on the passenger side air vlave vacuum line is broken. A broken or disconnected vaccum will keep the valve closed.

Good eye. I’m blind at times and caught myself looking before I bought the bypass. Completely missed it. Anyway I don’t have to worry about the other side doing it and stranding me somewhere. Thanks for letting me know.

Good video. What year and engine is your Tundra? I just ordered the Gen 2 bypass kit for my 4.0 L 2012. I havent done any real auto repairs in many years since Im older and limited physically. So Im watching as many videos as I can while I await the parts. The Hewitt people are great to work with. Looks like I should be able to handle this with some good lighting and a step ladder. Thanks. Thank you. My tundra was a 2nd gen 5.7 this install was on my 4.0 4Runner. I think the process is really similar though. You can do it no doubt. It’s pretty straight forward. Thanks for the comment.

Glad to see rig is going wel, watched the entire suspension build! Any thoughts to why your SAIS issues started after your lift or purely coincidental?

I had a viewer point out that I had a cracked vacuum line in my sais system. I believe one of my helpers inadvertently damaged the line when we were removing the air breather box installing the snorkel. I knew it was something g simple but never saw the cracked hose. No regrets though this system works flawlessly and I will never have to worry about the sais in the future.

For anyone in Canada that ordered, were you hit with fees from Fedex? In the past, they used to charge 50$ brokerage fee for shipments from outside Canada.

Hi, did the dash warning signs stopped from coming on since the fix? I have exactly the same problem with my 2016 T4R and this video i stumbled upon in my search for solution. Thanks!

Absolutely. I have had zero issues other than my stupidity in the beginning. I have about 1500 miles on it since installing and no warnings or check engine lights. Highly recommend.

@@Wheel2LiveOffRoadabout how much did you pay for the kit? It seems very easy install. BTW I'm not noticing any unusual with my truck and I've been driving it for the last 2 weeks since it's my daily driver. Thank you again.

I would reach out to them directly. They do make a statement that these are intended for off highway use or competition purposes. Installer assumes all risks associated with its use.

These 4runners just have a lot of problems. Constant CELs after you modify anything.

Few. This is a known issue that is easy to diagnose and the fix is permanent. My D2 is held together with bailing wire and scotch locks but will start every time as long as the battery is fresh. Said it before, its the most reliable thing I own.
