I installed the Spidertrax 1.25in wheel spacers, which significantly increased tire rub on the inner front fender liner (the spot in the video). It went from only rubbing in reverse uphills with wheels turned, to rubbing while going forward with moderate turns of the wheel. I drove it like that for a week...only to/from the train station. Pulling into parking spots took extra care. Yesterday I pushed forward & secured the front inner fender liners. Also used a coping saw to cut a small corner off the bumper. Really easy, only took about 30 minutes to get everything button'd up. There's some photos I posted here: www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/101762-what-did-you-do-your-4runner-today-1378.html#post2188916

Thanks for the review it inspired me. I'm using your setup on my 2005 sport. After hearing your comments about rubbing I'm a bit concerned with the going with the 275 70R17 (stock wheels). are you going to take any steps to solve that problem and if so, what? Should I do the control arms? Thanks for your advice. Would you do anything different?

Geek Out On Gear I ended up installing Camburg UCAs and it is perfect. Alignment/camber issues solved. Don't worry about the rub. I pushed the inner fender liners forward and trimmed a tiny piece of both side of front bumper. Fixed all the rubbing issues and you cannot tell anything was trimmed by looking at it.

Hi J_mosk, I am trying to get my 275s put on in couple days, and I am trying to find out, if your 275s (on stock wheels with no wheel spacer) will rub the stock UCA at full lock? Please response, and thanks so much! :)

And I just bought the ko2s so I was scouring the internet to see how they would look and lo and behold here's your video being so gosh-darn thorough at not only showing the tires but going into detail about many other things. I have a '07 4Runner SR5 and put a 3" Icon stage 2 lift. Just upgraded to 265-75 R16 Goodyear Duratrac tires. 1" taller and 1/2" wider sidewalls than stock. They look meaty and change the ride completely. Went with a load range E for towing and off road. You get triple side wall. Haven't had if rub yet, but not gone off road with it with the new tires yet. Was looking at KO2's, but the took out the triple polyester side wall and went single nylon. These were rated better off road and snow. Your right about the mileage. Lost about 1 to 1-1/2. If I drive real careful, I can keep it at 16. I think it might just be a recal on the speedo, but haven't found anything on it. looks great You did a good job.

I find that the 275's are more than enough tire. Very glad I didn't get 285. Would be too much for me. But if you do a lot of wheeling maybe the 285 is the right tire for you. You'll have rub with either tire but it's easy to fix.

@bradhouck9827
@bradhouck9827 8 жыл бұрын
There are how-to's online about how to get rid of the rubbing. Basically you pull the front liners forward as far as you can and then rescrew them with new holes. The wear on the edge of the front tires is most likely due more to the front wheels turning than the camber being out.

@ThePedalDance

Very nice! I still stand by Old Man Emu Lifts & would buy another kit without hesitation. OME is a staple in the industry & still seems like best bang for the buck. However, another company to look at is Dobinsons. Might be a bit more expensive but I’ve heard great things. I’ll probably give them a try for my next truck. I would also buy skinnier tires to save weight: 255/75r17 instead of 275/70r17 and maybe a less aggressive tread. It really depends on actual use case of the truck. I think the 255s would have done everything I needed, on road and off-road, while being lighter. The BFG KO2 is an excellent tire but they are heavy and if doing more highway driving, then something like Firestone Destination X/T All Terrain or Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S might be better. No doubt, KO2 is one of the best but basically I’d pay more attention to weight when building another 4Runner.

K02: I put 33x10.5r15 K02's on my Jeep TJ in Oct of 2015. Those tires will 100% make it through summer. That was daily driving appx 12k miles per year. The TJ is a VERY ligth weight vehicle so that factors in as well. But I couldn't be happier with them.

The 4.7L V8 is great...I absolutely love it. Very torquey, especially down low. And the MPGs are almost the same as the V6, very little difference. I have a Gibson exhaust on mine and it sounds mean. Are you thinking about a lift if you get it? If so, avoid models with the rear airbag suspension. I have the Sport Edition which had the xreas system, it worked okay but was kinda worn out at 117,000miles. I took it all out, plumbing, reservoirs and all. Highly recommend the Old Man Emu suspension lift from Toytec. It's a full kit, all engineered for the specific car. Had the same suspension on a 2001 4Runner and would do it again if I bought another. Let me know if you have any questions. If you're in NY hit me up, I'll let ya test drive and film a review:)

Doesn't aftermarket UCA typically provide additional castor adjustment, not camber? I am curious why you couldn't get your camber to spec with stock UCA.
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 8 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know. After reading your comment I googled camber & caster, read a bunch of explanations, looked at diagrams, and I'm even more confused than before. On Total Chaos' website the UCA description mentions both camber & caster adjustment. All I know for sure is that my front tires wear more on the outer edge and it can be fixed by certain aftermarket UCA's.

The first measurement you keep mentioning, 275 or 285, that is the section width. The number that is the measurement for height of the tire is called the aspect ratio which is the middle number '70 or 75' and then of course rim diameter '16 or 17'. So 275 is width 70 is height or aspect ratio and 17 is rim diameter. 275/70/17.

Definitely doesn't look "level", by no means looks bad just def. higher in the rear? I think 3/1.5 would be perfect from what I've researched... Personally my favorite is the ToyTec Ultimate 3" lift, but it's a little pricey. How much rear lift does your have!? Saw a post recently of Bilstein 5100 all around paired w/ OMU 885s and a 1/4 spacer up front. Sat slightly backward rake. I believe it ended up being a 3/2 lift?
@Johntvancejr
@Johntvancejr 6 жыл бұрын
I contemplated this forever with mine and ended up keep a little rake. Reason being? I regularly tow a trailer or put a 4 bike rack on my hitch. I don't want to be cruising down the highway with my front end sky high. This way it sits perfectly level when loaded down.

The OME lift is roughly 2.5in - 3in. You will likely have a little rub in the front regardless of 2in or 3in. I had to trim the bumper slightly and push the front fender liners forward a bit. If I had to buy new tires today, I'd get 255/75R17 to save some weight.

Yes. I trimmed small pieces off each side of the bumper. Can't see any difference. And I moved the inner fender liners forward an secured. Zip ties worked great. Haven't had an issue in 5 years.

Hi, thanks for the video. Did you install the Differential Drop Kit? I have the same truck but V6 model, do you think that same kit will work perfect on it?
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I installed the diff drop kit but it is not required if you keep the lift at 3inches or less. Kinda up to you. The same kit will work but if you have the V6 and do not plan on getting a steel bumper then consider the softer springs.

j_mosk would there be a problem running the stiffer springs till I get aftermarket bumpers

I did install the diff drop. It is recommended by not required for a lift 3inches or less. The same setup would work on V6.

j_mosk but the stiffer springs without the metal bumpers. Would that be a problem
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 7 жыл бұрын
MrTherooster it will be ok. It might be a stiff ride but will settle after a couple weeks. If you know for sure you're doing steel bumpers then get the heavier springs. You can always put some weight in the trunk if it's bad.

275 is the tread width not tire hight. 33"/32" that you are talking about is the tire height.
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 6 жыл бұрын
I am aware. The KO2 285s are about 33 inch, whereas the 275s are around 32.6 inch. So there is a difference in width & height.

How is the ride on those BFG K02 Tires - at 27570R17 they are E rated I believe

Steve Norman yes E rated, 3ply Kevlar side walls. Ride is awesome in all conditions I've encountered. Quiet on roads, great in snow & rain.

I love them. Quiet, nearly no road noise off them. Very capable tire. Would absolutely buy them again.

Did u have to extend any brake lines?
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 8 жыл бұрын
+michael strumpis Nope. They say 3" inches or under no brake line extension necessary. But if you do a lot of wheeling and will be flexing the suspension out, it may not be a bad idea to install extension.

Thanks for being willing to help. Would you buy one sight unseen? Don't hate on me but I have owned a 99 and 03 4Runner and have driven both to 250k miles and never serviced anything other than oil changes and tires. I just noticed I signed in from a different KZfaq account.
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 8 жыл бұрын
+CHARLIEBITESHARD I wouldn't buy one without looking at it in person and driving it. Put a refundable deposit on the vehicle so no one snags it and go see it asap. No hate for no maintenance, that's why Toyota's are awesome. But which would you choose if you're buying used & have the option to pick a truck that has been properly maintained by the previous owner or one that only had oil changes and tires?

Nice 4 runner I just bought the same 06 sport edition v-8 on 10/12/15. It has a luxury super smooth ride! I would like to lift it like yours! I am on a budget, and concerned that if I lift it, I will lose that smooth luxury ride, did you remove the factory shocks with the fluid dampner system? Also, do the sport edition run all wheel drive full time or are they 2 wheel drive full time? Any help thanks?
@ThePedalDance
@ThePedalDance 8 жыл бұрын
+ACYOTA Crown Thank you! Congrats on the new (to you) 4Runner! How many miles are on your 2006? I removed the XREAS suspension: all the shocks, springs, reservoirs and the plumbing that connects the shocks to the reservoirs. I explain some of this in the "BEFORE video" that's linked in the description. With the Old Man Emu Suspension, you will lose some of that smooth luxury ride. But that's not to say the OME doesn't ride well. It feels firm & rides more like a truck than with the stock suspension. I love it. As for your budget, there are cheaper lift options out there, such as spacers (Daystar, Cornfed, Toytec). I do not recommend going this route. You will lose more ride quality & capability by installing spacers with the factory shocks & springs than you would if you just went full OME suspension lift to begin with. Also, many people who lift on a budget with spacers do not like it and tend to upgrade springs/coils not long after. I prefer to save the money & do it right the first time, as it will be cheaper in the long run. Toytec sells the OME full suspension lift kit for about $900 (Link in Description). Check out the T4R.org 4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/102272-4th-gen-suspension-options-faq.html The V8 4th Gens are Full-Time 4WD. I'm not sure the ratio of torque split between the front & rear wheels but my understanding is it's never sending 100% of the power to the rear at anytime. Let me know if you have anymore questions! Happy to help:) Also, I recommend making a T4R.org account. Tons of great info on there & many people who are very knowledgeable when it comes to 4Runner's!
