The procedure to remove the oil is standard, Filling the oil is the technical part. When you replace the plastic straw at the bottom pan, you start filling the oil. Using approximately the same amount of oil as what you took out. A guy here mentioned Oil temperature. he is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. you must get a scanner. Start the engine. Let it idle until the TRANSMISSION oil temp is between 109 to 114 degrees F. you can use a computer scanner on the car itself or a basic laser temperature scanner on the transmission bottom oil pan. Its not about engine temperature. when that temperature is achieved, you continue filling oil until oil flows out of the straw. this would indicate the correct oil level. you then replace the drain plug and tightened. Transmission oil expands with heat. that's why you need that specific temperature range. Hope this helps. Trust me. I did the research guys.

Did you replace the fluid at operating temperature or cold? The research i did states that the fluid should be changed when it is at room temperature.

SO what I did was collected all the fluid, and replaced the exact amount. Reason being I did it on a weekend and could not get my auto technician to attach a scanner to determine the temperature. And I also did not have laser temperature guage. Ideally, its supposed to be refilled, then then start the car, bring it to the temperature range that I listed and then check the level.

Yes, that's the refill plug. just remove the wheel, then the plastic shield and you have easy access. Use the correct size socket and it comes off easily.

I changed the CVT fluid on my 2014 Corolla S with 140,000 miles. Mostly freeway miles. I commute 200 miles daily. The fluid that came out was so black and it stunk. Basically I just followed the visual instructions on this video. Of course, I couldn't read the subtitles but its pretty self explanatory and the video was very helpful. I kept the car leveled, I think that's important. I noticed that about 2 inches above the fill plug is another fill plug black in color. I found this plug difficult to access and put a funnel or hose in it. So I used the fill plug they use on video. It was much easier. Began by removing fill plug. Then remove plug from pan and let drain. Then remove that little tube from inside the pan. The video shows a longer tube than mine, looks like metal. Mine was half that size and orange plastic. Once it stopped draining, I measured the amount of used fluid using a empty jug. I then poured the same amount of fresh fluid into a separate jug. Insert the plastic tube in pan and I started to fill trans thru fill hole. Once fluid started coming out the bottom, I had my wife go thru the gears while I continued filling as fluid poured out the bottom. I had to use a little more fluid than I had previously measured. I did this till fluid came out clear red. At this time we stopped going thru the gears and put it in park. I waited till it stopped dripping and then I installed drain plug. Installed fill plug and put car back together. Overall it was fairly easy. I did it in my garage, lifted rear of car on ramps and jacked up the front to level it. Greaf video and very helpful. Thanks. In the service manual says to replace around 60K miles if driving in slow places like city streets or idling a lot. I'm at 65k and I just realized it's time! Time to get oily. Thanks for your help!

@@raynishdhauntal2883 Yes, it's been running great for over year now, have 2 Vitz vehicles, both used, one with 165K, had to drain and fill 4 times every 2 weeks to get a clearer fluid, was pitch black. I simply used a temp scan tool to give me a reading of 45 C on the trans pan, jacked car up leveled, removed drain plug and straw, drained about 2 liters, reinstalled straw, filled transmission fluid through the fill hole and wait for overflow through the straw, started engine and ran the stick through gears N, R, D, 2, B, five times, left in Drive while wheels were jacked up and rolling, continued filling to overflow, then reinstalled drain plug on trans pan. Reason why I left it on drive, was if I placed it on Park, it would spill through the straw, also was told by a mechanic to leave it on Drive as this was a better method than to leave it on Neutral, as in Drive, the trans fluid would fill the gears up better. I haven't had a problem since and the drives great. I've heard that people have been having problems with Valvoline CVT if they have Toyota Hybrids, Honda's running in cold climates and Nissan vehicles requiring NS3. Nissan;s requiring NS2 vehicles seem to fair better.... ohh, once you've reinstalled drain plug, lightly step on brakes and shift to Park. And that should be that. Your done. No issues for over a year. Replace every 20-30k miles depending on use, I'll just replace mine every 25K, better than having a messed up transmission.

@@blueadept4689 do you have a repair manual for the vitz? I thought the plug should be opened when temperature is between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius. What about the filter?was thinking about replacing that too. On soms of the toyota cars you can short the ob2 port(4 and 13) for an indication of the fluid temperature, is it possible on the vitz?

Yes, warm up vehicle for 20 minutes or drive it around, then begin procedure as prescribed by this wonderful tutorial. Use a temperature scan tool and take into consideration a variable difference of 5 degrees C between pan and actual tranny fluid. 2 years now and car runs better than when I received it used. I will be attempting this procedure along with an aftermsrket filter, the car has 225,000 km on it and runs like a champ. Did this procedure when car had 165,000 km on it. Used Valvoline CVT Fluid.

This is much better info than what i found on forum called Pakwheels where it says say you remove the entire sump (which has 13 bolts) and you have to replace the sump gasket (which is difficult to find as it isn't a commonly replace part). Explains why, the second drain tube is removable which is something the author on the post of Pakwheels did not seem to be aware of. I just wish the subtitles of this video were in English, would it be possible to update the captions in the video description? it would really help.

I started experiencing erratic gear shifts from parking to Drive on my allion 2011 but when its come to changing gears, my car is okay. I changed cvt and the car was okay. after sometimes it started again, the mechanic told me 4 tires fluid could not be enough since we drained everything, I topped up 2 litres and the car was okay. after some few km, the problem has started again. Is the transmission fluid not enough or what is the issue

When draining the oil there was oil coming out of the sump but when filling you did not fill the sump.

Thanks for the good video and very clear and informative, i alway met different mechanics with different way for changing CVT. Recent change is they just fill up the 3 litres ,they said too much oil will cause problem. i insisted to do N.D, and then top up till 4 litres finish. months later, the drive shaft right oil seal leaked. Seal no damage. So now they only let me top up 3 litres + only. please advise whether it is enough? will it affects my gear box. alot of AXIo got gear box damage problem . Worse is this car no Dipdick to check. Any advise ? Or correct me if i am wrong.

If just drain, there is still many leave in the gear box, if use the method in video will drain little bit more which mean more new oil inside your gear box.

I know my transmission is damaged but I want to change the fluid soon to prolong it's life. Online manuals recommends filling 6 litres [if you fill and drain as shown in this video above, while running the car] Did your tranny fail on you? Any updates?

hello, I have a question, because I am little bit confused. I read around 10 articles, 3 official forum Toyota and 80% recomend to change oil in CVT after +/- 60 000 km. But from official Dealer in Poland I have got information that this is not necessery, and they do it only when they are changing gear for the new one. I want to buy Corolla 2016r, 1.6, CVT, 86 000km. and really I don't know - change oil or not, is it save or not, is 86k km is not too late for changing gear oil (of course if it's really necessery). help :)

80k km is slightly too late, once you drain out the fluid compare with the new atf, you will understand then.

I almost destroyed my Toyota Camry transmission by changing the fluid again and again flushed it 5 times transmission was jerky I didn’t know what to do tried every KZfaq method.then I come across one video almost same as this guy does.I put the transmission in reverse and about 109f on the pan let the excess fluid drained and it finally worked now I feel a slight jerk into second gear the rest all fine.

Practically yes, as you change it during starting the car, if you need more cleaner, just prepare another bottle, keep filling and let it drain out.

sayed mazhar I wouldn't flush it. A drain and refill removes about 1/2 the capacity of the fluid

The early the better, best is 20k km - 40k km, the oil is not that expensive right :)

Most newer cars have filters that can't be replaced and unless you were racing your corolla, you should not need to touch your transmission at all.

No you dont, the pan and gasket comes off with 19 bolts and the filter is right there. Its 20 bucks to replace it and takes an extra half hour, you also get twice the fluid replaced.

Your step -open oil sump nut and drain -open secondary nut inside it and drain -close secondary nut -fill new cvt oil untill some of oil come out from drain -start engine,press brake, alternate gear R-N-D change untill some oil come out from oil pan and back to N,at the same time fill the oil. -close back oil fill nut -close back oil drain nut

Can these steps be applied to a 2014 Toyota Corolla with the CVT? Also - do you mind writing the steps out in English? After filling the CVT, it looks like you turn it on and run it through all of the gears (D-R-N-P) a few times. Then do you fill it again, wait for it to stop dripping out from the drain plug, and put the drain plug back on? Does the fluid have to be at a certain temperature when you are doing this?

Do you mean the Corolla with the latest CVT FE fluid? If yes, it's same, during the gear shift moment, we do fill it slowly and let the gearbox circulation drip out the old fluid till it becomes fresh red, after that, shift to N, wait for the water temperature raise till normal and the fluid stop dripping out, then put the drain plug back, done!

Thank you so much for the reply - people in the US are scared of doing this themselves, and I'm trying to research if it's possible for the average DIY mechanic. Do you have to hook up a live scanner (Techstream, or live OBD reader) to make sure that the CVT fluid is at a certain temperature while you are checking it? I heard that it can expand / contract and give false readings if it's not at the right temperature? When you say you "wait for the water temp to raise to normal" are you talking about the coolant temp at the halfway mark, or were you referring to the temp of the CVT fluid as measured by a live scanner?

If you don't have scan tool or any OBD2 reader, you may just wait till the radiator fan start moving(without on air-cond) which the temperature of thermo fan switch is preset, usually range 85°c-95°c.

Good video, but not complete. More oil comes out when you remove the oil pan. There is also an filter inside, which needs to be replaced. Remove oil pan.

I have worked on cars for about 50 years, never wore gloves until recently, and then only bc they keep my hands cleaner. Don’t have cancer. Not saying it doesn’t cause it, but there is a lot of exaggeration. Ditto benzene and other solvents.

Less than 4, but we fill it all to push old fluid drain out, make it as clean as it can with the capacity.

This fluid was first used in the following transmission: 2012-2013 K41B (Scion IQ) 2013 - CVT Fluid FEEdit In 2013, Toyota released the CVT fluid FE fluid specification for Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT). This fluid was first used in the following transmissions: 2013 K313 (Corolla) 2014 K41B (Scion IQ) 2017 K114 (C-HR) 2017 K312 (Yaris Thailand) 2020 K120 (Corolla)

If your is cvt model, just follow the video instruction, turn your steering to most left, open the plastic cover with 4 bolt, then u will see the refill bolt stat either TC or FE :)

@@zendengoh Strange that the C-HR has K114 - It does. The Wiki for the K-series transmission states that the C-HR has the K120 (it does not have this). There is no entry for the K114 transmission. I tried to correct this, but someone keeps removing it.

Scotty Kilmer says just under 2 liters. You never remove all of the fluid. You just change it more often say 30,000 miles.

@@dybus87 numbnuts...you don't check the temperature of the transmission fluid for its ability to flow. You check the temp because Toyota tells you to. Transmission fluid will expand once the desired temperature is reached, giving you the correct and true level.

Toyota Yaris 2007 1.3L, 35C-45C, was told that CVT fluid expands with heat, so if you overfill it, could damage the transmission, though I don't see that happening with an overflow tube.

@tho nuguyen, genuine Toyota CVT Fluid TC is maroon-ish red. That is what they have put in. Do some research before you comment to confuse people.

Valvoline CVT full synthetic is Amber-light yellow. Had no patience for ordering Toyota's CVT fluid and bought this instead. 2 months driving and the car shifts great, Toyota Vitz/Yaris 1.3L, SCP90. The previous owner failed to maintain the vehicle, and am assuming the previous owner adhered to Toyota's mantra on 'Life Time Transmission Fluid', blah blah blah, upon receiving the used vehicle, it had high revs constantly and AC fan was on like crazy. On first drain, the transmission fluid was black, thankfully no signs of metal shavings, there is still hope, which is the reason I opted for a 'spill and fill' rather than a 'flush'. Did not bother with a pan drop and filter replacement for fear of damaging the transmission internals as there are multiple sensors on the pan itself. After 4 changes, the color is still dark, but not black on the 1st drain, but a lighter hue and the viscosity is fluid, no maple like on the first drain. Goodness, after all this drama, the car runs smoother, idling quieter, better mpg, AC on at acceptable intervals and a better improvement on torque when accelerating, all this in conjunction with an engine oil change.
