The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is finally here in America, a potent hot hatch with 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, and a clever AWD system letting the driver choose between various torque splits (60/40, 50/50, and 30/70). It's a riot to drive, and worthy of its price tag.
In this video we'll discuss the 1.6L 3-cylinder turbo, 6-speed manual transmission, AWD system, suspension, wheels, brakes, tires, and what it's like to drive on both the road and the track!

same sentiment here... just wish they would make it in numbers that dealers won't gouge customers. 37k isnt chump change, but im betting dealers will want 10k markups, putting the car in a different price point. I actually don't know if it would be that useful for learning. I think it's a gimmick to entice people unsure about manual transmissions, but it seems that the car helping you give enough throttle when you don't give enough yourself would be training you wrong. And auto revmatching is just lazy, that's not something you need to be able to do to drive stick anyways, it's something you'll develop over time.
@Soh90
@Soh90 Жыл бұрын
@@Mutantcy1992 Ok negative Nancy. I’ve been driving manual for 20 years and I still appreciate Toyota IMT function. For beginners (my wife) it made it super easy for her to learn. For experts (me) it takes a little bit of fatigue out of my drive. I can rev-match on my own. Hell I can upshift without the clutch because I’m THAT in tuned with my car. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate being able to just slam the can in a lower gear and have the car work out the matching engine speed for me 🤷🏾‍♂️ It’s kinda like adaptive cruise and lane trace assist. Yes I can control my own dam throttle and keep my car in the lane by my damn self, but having the car do it for me while I just hood the steering wheel and relax my foot near the peddle is so much easier.
@Mutantcy1992

@@Soh90 Okay we get it, you're the one true savior of manual transmissions and you've returned to us at last. Seems like you replied just to brag about how you are one with the car. @@smellyfish36 I get it, I was referring to it as a haldex because it employs the same layout (just like all transverse engine 4WD solutions). It also has the same hotspots as a haldex, the wear of the clutch pack in the rear transfer unit and the complexity of haldex, as opposed to traditional quattro systems that may have electronic assitance but the power transfer function is mechanic. Hopefully these things are built to last and will not turn the clutch packs into silver goo, clogging the pump unit like those VAGs and Volvos... :( Having had a Quattro and now having a haldex I can really appreciate the efforts Toyota is doing here to give 60% rear bias! :D

“This is better”. Yes. The Corolla GR showcases why 90’s Supras are 6 figures. When Toyota sets their engineering team free, we see greatness. Like the Mark IV Supra, like the Celica, like the GR Corolla. This car is everything we Toyota fans want. However, I don’t think anyone disagrees when I say the Mark V Supra would have been substantially better IF Toyota decided it was worth the in house R&D the Yaris/Corolla GR received. After 20ish years Toyota has finally given us a pure Japanese sports car to relish.

@@Xander1Sheridan We'll see--you can't even buy a regular Toyota anything right now without ordering it, there's no cars on the lots anywhere. These vlogger hype videos piss me off, honestly. The whole automotive industry is in deep doodoo.

@@bb5242 Yeah our toyota lot has like 3 hybrid highlanders and the rest are used chevy and ford trucks. I would buy one of these for $37k.. but its not gonna be $37k, and I heard its pushed back another year now? (nov2023?) oh well, one can dream

based on your image at 1:48, the turbo is NOT integrated, but just bolted on same as any old school turbo and the runners aren't any shorter than any other old turbo setup. Modern design (e.g. VAG and others) has the turbo bolted directly to the head with the exhaust manifold integral to the cylinder head. Kind of puzzling that they didn't do this given the rest of it seems pretty modern. Kinda heavy for its size too. That said, I'll try and get one if it makes financial sense.

If you can afford the extra cost, I'd go with the Corolla, definitely more fun! Both solid cars though.

As a GR Yaris(circuit pack) owner since April 2021 I can say this review very much spoke to me. I am sure that you are 100% right in what you said. I am happy it is light but it is very small. If you plan on getting the GR corolla, you don't want to get the core version for sure..
@EdwoodCA
@EdwoodCA Жыл бұрын
Seriously interested in why you think it's better to pass on the Core version. Is it solely because it doesn't have the better LSD? Or other reasons? [I ask as I was pondering the Core but optioning the better LSD.] -Cheers!
@MT-eb2dx
@MT-eb2dx Жыл бұрын
@@EdwoodCA Because the GR Yaris lives for the amazing grip it has in wet and dry due to the LSDs, I certainly fell in love with it! It's not a drift car, if you like drifting, get a red car. The GR corolla is no different.. You can option the better LSD in the core??? Didn't know that, the GR Yaris had basically 2 options... But the good tires are a must as well..

I hope they sell well, and Toyota takes note enough to take a larger part in their sports car development in the future. Imagine the same engine in a chassis like the 86, or 2 of them stacked together for a proper Toyota inline 6 👀

Oh, golly, this is golden: a great overview of the new Corolla, and a little personal on-track abuse by way of Mr. Camissa's surprise cameo. Yes, I hope Toyota sells these by the trainload. (And, hey, now we know the emergency system works, right?)

The best looking hot hatch was my long gone Alfasud 4 door. It was impossible to unstick, had four decent discs and the Alfa boxer engine was a 7000 rpm screamer and a 512bb type exhaust note. Front and back were very spacious. Light and very low cgi. Rust got it.
