I’ve been working with@BushtechCanopiesAccessories
for a couple years now, and have loved using their products and their design philosophy. So when they asked me if I would be interested in helping develop their X Series Tray and Canopy for the Hilux double cab, I jumped at the opportunity. We had used the tray system on one of their R&D vehicles through the baviaanskloof, and it was awesome, so to have the opportunity to do my own custom setup for my needs, I was just so excited! It was a lot of work, we spent 3 weeks every day, stripping and rebuilding my vehicle back into an overlanding rig! We custom designed a new mounting setup for the @REDARCElectronics Redvision setup, with the Manager30, we have space for up to 400AH of Lithium and a sizeable inverter, a new stand up fridge from Flex the CF65 to test out, and in general we can begin playing around with the new set up.
Check out the tray here: bushtech.co.za/tray-canopies/

Can you do an overlanding series for mainstream workers, minimalists and/or low budget. Meaning a tub rack or roof rack at most and tents for camping. Portable equipment for cooking with a rollertop and no canopy. No bullbar, no fancy 12V systems just a standard rig and let's see how far you can push it. 31" tires and no lift, standard suspension. What is as close to stock a Bakkie capable of in the overlanding space is what I would love to see...

It’s a good concept for sure. At the end of the day you need to travel the way that makes you happy. Our budget build series with the Isuzu looks into these different vehicles setups in a fun way, and will continue to show a variety of different types of vehicle setups. But I’ll put some thought into a stripped down overlanding vehicle setup

Your rig is looking more and more like an Aussie style Hilux ute. 😁 What a great upgrade for your Hilux. Congratulations. 👏 You probably won't know what you'd do with all the space you now have. Not to mention the ease of access to all that space. You should consider flipping the opening side of your fridge (opening from the right), to suit your setup better and improve access.

Thanks for the great report RO - the whole vehicle and canopy looks classy and good to see you’ve gone for the Red Vision mgt system which is all made just down the road from where I live in Adelaide - my project is going on to a 2010 Hilux using Amptron Lithium batteries, Red Vision system and Engel fridge/freezer.- I also had the tub and ARB fibreglass canopy but being short I could never get inside the side windows and also reaching over the rear tailgate - here in Australia we’re all dumping them and fitting aluminium canopies which I can now access so much easier and the storage is amazing - enjoy your travels.

From a history of using these types of systems. On your kitchen slide add a second slide that comes out and can fit a collapsible bin for a sink etc, add dividers in the canopy to keep stuff better organised and keep it from moving around. On the non kitchen side ad a second drawer up towards the front with a divider shelf. It will serve well as a area to store camera equipment , charging area, and place to have a work station if doing things like uploading data to SSD or working on storing drones etc. could have worked in an area on the front side of the canopy like called frenching for an antenna for cell booster or comms on non side. Didn’t see how you put in water but having that accessible on the front side outside kitchen of canopy is baller easy. Adding a shelf up top especially under the oven towards the back you could do a small storage cabinet for spices or such. Adding some extra outside lighting for camp and out and about at night would help too. I take a large look at how many in the AU are running their systems and you can get some great tried and true ideas. Other things like a handing rod or even cabinet to hang clothes. Adding an area with a larger mirror for the ladies to comb hair or make themselves up etc. much one can do but there is extra one can do to make even better. Even having the canopy as a single piece and having basic things like electrical Already installed. And having the bed as a one piece system for those who want to be able to install easily themselves. With tanks and such already installed and run. The flatbed may be better served with a small headache rack etc. good luck.

Congratulations what a great build out. Can't wait to see the Botswana series. Will you be creating a trip prep video? One that talks about planning booking permits/permissions, fees, if guides are required etc. Sort of a logistics to show viewers how they can plan similar trips and also a bit behind the scenes of all the work you put into these trips.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I’m so excited about it! The Botswana series is going to be something special for sure! 😉 I haven’t really got anything planned like that; usually the prep of a trip is so chaotic we don’t even get a chance to get camera’s rolling 😂 there is a lot of lastminute.com stuff 😂 this time we saved ourselves a huge amount of stress though by using Ultimate Routes to book our trip, they arranged all the permits and everything for us. It was worth every cent!

@@RoamOverlanding That is something great to understand. Here in the States many people plan their overlanding trips to State, Federal, and Free Land Management (BLM) parks, themselves. There are a handful of apps, that can help set routes etc. Thanks for sharing 👍

A worthy upgrade to your Hilux. Look at all that space now. But more importantly, the ease of accessing them. Have you considered fitting a slim upright pullout pantry in the space between the fridge and the drawer? Plus if it was my rig, if your upright fridge have the feature, I'd swap the door hinge to the left side. Then the fridge door opens from the right to the left. IMO it will provide better access. If Bushtech offer a permanently mounted fold-down ladder at the back (like you'd see in many Australian canopies), also highly recommended. 'Coz usually the steps are wider, thus more comfortable than the RTT ones. I'd also place an LED light on top of the rear canopy pointed rearwards to provide illumination to the pull out trundle drawer. 'Coz friends who have them, frequently use them as tables.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
We did try fit a pantry, but the gap was just too tight! The fridge could swap the hinge, not a bad idea 👌🏻 BushTech are working on designing a fold down ladder, so let’s how that goes in the future 👏🏻 and it was hilarious because I got to my first test night of camping and realised I forgot a light for the rear 😂 we made a nice little plan with a magnetic rechargeable led light that can do red, white and amber; worked like a charm 👌🏻

Good that you’ve considered as much as practical your weight mgt in the canopy keeping as much above the rear axle - I’ve seen bent Navara and Triton chassis because the vehicle has too much weight to the rear and as soon as you come out of a big hole at speed something has to give - in fact by pure design the Triton’s rear axle is much closer to the cabin compared to a Hilux thereby limiting how much you can load on the rear tray/canopy - I’ve also fully insulated the canopy using insuwool to keep the temperatures lower than normal

@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely heavier; but the vehicle is handling better because the weight distribution is so much better. The ecu is remapped and o have a hybrid turbo to make some lower down torque. My egt’s run hot so I’m on a mission to get a proper tune done now. But the truck is doing good considering. Better than a 4.2D cruiser 😂

Very nice setup , very similar to Ryan's setup from 4x4ventures, really nice. Unfortunately not all the guys and girls that aspire to the overlanding scene can justify the amount of money to spend on these types of setups . Those that can't afford it will vasbyt with what we already have in true south african style.

The normal canopy and drawersystem setup is no slouch! There is a noticeable difference between the two in terms of access and space, but it’s definitely only going to be worthwhile for those that don’t have to sell their children for it 😂 (or it depends on your children) 🤭

I think if you need that stuff and equipment you should just stay home, part of the fun of getting into the bush is ruffing it. Still I have to say I would still like that vechile well done

Looks very heavy?
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
It’s actually only 75kg more than the previous setup. What’s increases the weight a lot, is that you have so much more space and accessibility that you can load a buuuuncccch more stuff in. But the weight distribution is so much better that the vehicle is actually handling very well 👌🏻

It looks beutifull, but looks is good for a weekeend and no longer, qith my wife, we went for 8 days journey, I think we got more stuff than this metal canopy plus a XR650r on, we place a base camp, and enjoy all around with the bike, that osviuoly save some gas for the whole autosufient jorney.

I have no delusions about that; but my channel has shown builds across many financial brackets, and this is the turn to show the folks who have some bucks to spare a couple interesting and exciting options. Have you checked out our budget build series instead maybe?
