It's time for another tug of war showdown between Mat and Yianni! Mat's brought along three contenders to see if he can take down the Land Rover Discovery. First up, it's the VW Touareg, with a 3-litre V6 that'll hit 286hp & 600Nm. Alongside that, he has the Audi Q7 (which includes the same engine as the Touareg), and then finally, he has the Land Cruiser Invincible! Meanwhile, Yianni's in the Discovery, which is powered by a 3-litre V6 turbodiesel that'll produce 254hp and 600Nm. Does the best of British have what it takes to win against these three contenders? Hey guys - you have to show and compare the tires too - Tire type and tread depth play a bigger role here than horsepower and torque. Added to this is the weight of the vehicle, including the driver, the contents of the tank and other clutter in the trunk.

I think you'll find that the TRUE off readers like landcruisers are only MADE in 4wd with low range. Whereas land rover makes a lot of 2wd and fraud-by-fours.

That's the beauty of that Land Rover Terrain Response system. It just digs in and doesn't let the wheels spin up so that when the VW, Audi and Toyota systems eventually fail, the Land Rover system just pulls away like it's nothing. It's very impressive to be fair.

@TheDotaGuyN'LetsNotForgetCS GO no... The Land Rover Terrain Response keeps the torque vectored to each wheel whereas the other systems aren't as sophisticated so they spin the power away. Did you not watch the first tug of war between the G63 and Range Rover SVR? He explains it at the end of that video. Please watch it.

2 big problems with this. Side fixed towing spreads the power less evenly across the wheels. Traction is limited so unless there's more grip on the side the tow is hooked to, you will lose traction more easily than then same car using a centre mounted tow hook. 2nd problem is Matt puts down too much power when he thinks he's losing & makes the car lurch sideways, making a sideways drift inevitable. 4 cyl or not the Toyota's big disadvantage is the tow mounting.

Hang on a second, the wheels didn’t start spinning until Yanni started to actually accelerate, that is not a problem with the driver, more so the abysmal TC on the Toyota, Audi and Volkswagen, the systems they have couldn’t control the power going to wheels, hence they started to spin, losing traction and ultimately losing the tug of war. If you look at the LR, it’s wheels started to spin but within a second the TC kicked in and allocated power elsewhere. Take a look at 6:00 - 6:07, it shows the TC of the LR controlling the power to wheels, something all of the other cars didn’t do.

Tug of war doesn't make sense when Mat drives as on asphalt. Yianni is actually sneaky starting with low RPM for low to none slippage. Rules of physics dictates this war. Once Mat rev like Murica F YEAAAH, Yianni is like "here we go!"

A range rover with street tires can win a land cruiser with offroad tires. And let's not talk about all the air suspension systems that range rovers had since 2005 with a screen that tells you the information about the wheels. When the car is parked, if one wheel makes more pressure than the others, the suspension of the car will be novel to be straight. After watching all of tug of wars i can definitely say Matt's an amazing driver but just not experienced enough with off roading. Off roading needed to be done with a light foot and keeping traction in mind, being heavy footed will just make you loose traction ever more than a car which is standstill. Yianni did a good job and he knew matt would be heavy foot and waited for him to loose traction as always.

I think it's more the Land Rover Terrain Response System knows when and which wheel to lay down the torque to. Mat explains it quite well in the SVR vs G-Wagen tug of war video.

That's completely correct. This is staged and the outcome is easily decided in this particular situation. Every time it starts with the "victim" vehicle tugging first, on the grass and mud, until it starts spinning its wheels. Spinning its road-biased tires on grass and mud makes them SLICKS. At this point the disco just steps on the gas a little and off it goes, since the other vehicle is already slipping and has slicks on it. Simple. And stupid. If they swap the disco (waiting car) with something else, it will end the same way. The waiting car will always win this particular set-up. Also a tug-of-war is one of the dumbest "tests" out there. It shows absolutely nothing in terms of vehicle offroad performance. Not a thing.

@@gc2234 No. It's all about the grass. Once you remove the top layer you lose. Yanny waits it out. Leaves his grass intact and waits for Mat to press on the gas. The moment Mat has too much power down he has lost it. If you just release the brake you have a higher chance of winning than hitting the gas all the way. Just look at him, he presses the gas so slightly that the car doesn't even move the first few seconds. He is controlling it so smoothly. This can also be achieved by just braking. Brake at the start, wait for the other guy to spin his wheels, game over.
