We were driving over some high sand dunes in an area we were not familiar with.
There were lots of hollows and sand traps, these were filled with very soft sand due to high winds the day before. There was still a little wind blowing.
We came over the top of a dune and headed down into a trap. Although we were driving very slowly, at that point the sand is too steep and too soft to reverse, so we gently eased the Land Cruiser into the hole. There are a lot of areas like this. A lot of people are injured by driving into these at speed.
The Land Cruiser is a 3000Kg vehicle not an easy thing to extricate. Luckily we had another vehicle with us. We cleared the sand from the front of the Land Cruiser, this was so that we didn't damage the front as we winched it out.
We positioned the Nissan Xterra on the slope below the hollow and attached the winch rope from the Land Cruiser winch to it. If we were alone we would have used our sand anchor, • Video
The Land Cruiser then winched itself out.
It took around 20 minutes or so with the digging. It was windy, but luckily the temperature was 21°C and not the 50°C that we see in the summer.
