Hey mate great vid, finding these service vids for the 90 really helpful, did my first oil and filter change off your other vid. Just wondering if you used the same oil for both front and rear diffs, and how to know which oil to use, would supercheap be able to help me with that? Another question regarding a service for the old girl, what else would you do other than diff oil, gear box and transfer, and engine oil? filters ect? Cheers mate loving the videos

Thanks Xavier! Any of the auto stores will be able to help you with oil types and quantities mate. Other bit of maintenance I’d recommend is greasing up your tailshaft’s every 10000kms or so. Just be very careful not to put much grease into the 2 slip joints. If you do it can cause issues with seals on the shafts (and the crush washer in the diff) as it pushes on them as the grease expands the joint. I’ll make a video on tailshaft maintenance one day once I get a chance….

Good vids. My problem is that the drain plug on the rear diff is mush. I mean like it's made from blu tak - I think the only way to get it off will be to weld whole new nut on the top

Tried the hammer and chisel thing. Nut is mush. Had to weld a new nut on the top. I really think that when they made the nut Toyota just looked for any metal lying around on the floor and used it. Old tin cans probably. Why on earth would you make a nut like this out of soft metal ?????

Yeh I’m hearing you bud! I stripped one years ago on a hilux and I remember Toyota selling me a hardened/upgraded one to put in.

There are 2 other nightmare issues with the 90 that I know of: 1) Try changing the rear shocks - the top nut has been 'hidden' up underneath the boor floor. A day in hell is the day you have to take those rusty bolts off. By the way on the 120 they have provided two little removable hatches in the boot floor to access them 2) The rear light cluster in the bumper. They catch all the road muck and rusting solid is not even a good enough description of it. Try getting any tools into the curved section of the bumper to get them off... and try doing anything from the outside without damaging the bumper. In the end I spent about 3 hours carefully with a dremmel getting the bolt heads off from the outside (they are also encased in plastic). This really should have been specified as a stainless steel bolt it would have cost them $0.01 extra. Now mine are changed I have covered them in grease which I top up every 6 months so I don't have to go through that misery again.

Hey, I just moved to Melbourne and brought a really good condition stock 90 series. With 250km on the clock. I have had two previously in South Africa and done lots of touring in them in africa. Ill slowly build up the current car for touring. Question: are you running diff breather? i haven't seen them in any of your videos, if so easy to do on a 90 series? thank you

Thanks mate I’m sure people can work their own oil out. I didn’t go into it as people can suss out their own preferences for oil. Also it could vary if they have lockers fitted etc and running temps they are likely to encounter. Also most auto shops will recommend oil to suit

Hey buddy, I love these vids, gonna help me heaps! The pump that you use to fill the diffs, does that come with the oil or is it a seperate purchase, if so can you get them at supercheap etc. I'm hanging to get started on my 90 when I get back. Oh yeah, dont wanna build me one of those rear bars you have made do ya 😋

Thanks Dan stoked they are going to help you! The pump is a separate purchase. Any half decent auto shop should have one. As for the rear bar I made that when I worked up north in a fabricating shop/steel yard. Unfortunately I don’t have access to any of the gear anymore. Thanks for watching mate 🍻

Hi mate, quick question. I have the petrol version of this. Do u have diff lock front or rear. Also if so what brand and would air locker or e locker be better. 🍻
@bushandbeachaustralia
@bushandbeachaustralia 2 жыл бұрын
I went with a Detroit auto rear locker. The locker itself has been fine but the shop I paid to fit it didn’t set it up correctly. I’ve had to rebuild it and replace the crown wheel and pinion and all bearings. Unless you really need it or take the time to do it yourself and set it up correctly I wouldn’t bother. It’s hard to find someone that takes pride in their work anymore.
@bushandbeachaustralia

Personally I don’t like the idea of running airlines or electrical to a locker. If you wanted to run a front locker you would have to though.
