Toyota Prius 2017 Prius prime coolant change DRAIN and FILL do it yourself

My first time doing a drain in fill for the Prius coolant. The first 45 minutes is a recap on the whole process. And then after that it shows how I remove the bottom plastic cover. And then other details.
*** Make sure you fill it up as much as you can drive it around let the engine completely cool before opening up the coolant to top it off.
This is for a Prius and similar years I am sure.

Subbed my guy AS much Prius Prime content as possible if you ask me! I have just bought a 2018 prime with 60k miles ish (86.000 KM's) on it and i plan to do as much as i can myself in terms of maintenance. I'd love a sort of "list" but so far i am just going off what i read on forums etc. Fantastic car!

Good job. I'm just hitting 104K on my 2017 Prime. I finally sold my 05 Prius, after getting it ready to sell by doing front and rear brakes, engine water pump and belt, a taillight assembly, and a few minor things. I'd already done the transmission fluid a while ago. On the Prime, I would have done front and rear brakes last weekend if I hadn't fallen head first onto a boulder and also banged up my knees a little. I got very lucky to not break my skull or neck. I guess I need to stop thinking I'm 30 when I'm 65. Surprised my Prime needs pads at 104K, the original brakes on the 05 lasted 230K, but I did drive the Prime hard out west a few times, basically going flat-out on twisty mountain roads. The rotors are only lightly grooved, and seem barely worn, so I was going to just do pads. But then I spent $78 to get 4 rotors online. It's easier to replace them than guess whether I can milk the rotors to last through the life of the new pads. I'll see what thicknesses the original rotors are after filing and/or turning them, maybe reuse them on the next pad change at 200K. I'll do the Prime brakes within the next few days or week. Original windshield is being replaced on Thursday. And I have to replace the front right signal light assembly. Busted it when the car was 3 months old, eventually bought the $735 part off a wreck for $150, but never installed it. Time to get the Prime back to like new. What a great car it is. Thanks for your videos. I always say I ought to post video of the work I do on mine, but then I never bother to do it.

This method only drains the radiator there's another 3qt or so coolant remaining in the engine block which has separate drain plug. Also trapped air needs to bleed out over time so keep an eye on reservoir and keep topping off.

My 2011 shows overheat and mechanic told some issue with head gaskets that can only be repaired by authorized service center. When I looked myself to this coolant tank its almost empty. Is that normal that all coolant will be sucked inside engine ? Will filling some coolant myself will help?

Thank you for this video, but you didn’t have to bleed air out of the system or anything? Just worried about my 17 Prime 130k miles overheating due to that. I’ve always done my own maintenance since day 1, but this is the last thing I need to do.
@DIYBIGMAN

Just make sure you run the engine and keep topping off the Reservoir tank and radiator. I had to keep topping off a few times the next days after as well. It’s all good now.

Have you ever heard of an issue with low heat temperature? For example, heat is set to high, but the air temperature from the vent is on the cooler side, even after running the car for a while. I have a 2017 Prius Prime. Wondering if if could be related to the coolant. Thanks!
@DIYBIGMAN

Honestly, I’ve never had that problem with my car. But I have heard of other people with similar issues that you are speaking of. But I have noticed my car does generally heat up faster when the engine is running versus just EV only

How often do you change the oil? Dealer told me 16,000km, which seems very long. And I can't find anything in the manuel
@DIYBIGMAN
@DIYBIGMAN Жыл бұрын
Personally because I drive a lot of highway miles I change mine every 7500 miles. Plus I drive a lot of electric miles. You can never go wrong with the 5000 mile or oil change. I would always err on the side of changing it sooner than later and more frequent. Bad things can happen when you wait too long or too many miles.

I went to Pep Boys today asked for a flush I watched him through the window and all he did was drain and fill when I was advised by them for a flush with the machine.. He used red/pink coolant for the engine and inverter which I clearly told them not to touch the inverter.. am I in trouble or do you think I'll be fine 2016 Prius..?
@DIYBIGMAN

Not sure just make sure you check the levels a few times after all the air bubbles are out. And top off as needed. I don’t trust anyone so I do it myself as much as possible.

Yes you can but that’s just a fraction that you will end up replacing. Which is better then nothing. I ended up using just over a full container to refill after my drain.

Nice video but how you bleed the engine coolant? Why the engine reservoir coolant is not even level in ? You have a second valve on the coolant reservoir for what is that? Not something to do with bleeding the system?
@DIYBIGMAN

Hopefully someone has the answers to you questions! This process worked fine for me wish there was an easier way to bleed. I heard you could just put it in maintenance mode to help bleed out the air. I just drove it around the block several times in my case.
