I have a 2013 Prius and I've always driven it in ECO mode but I have a lead foot so my MPG averaged about 30 MPG. Since gas prices have risen this year I've been finding ways to conserve gas. These tips all helped me get an average of 54 MPG, even with city driving since I use cruise as much as possible.

Good video, I am the owner of a Prius 3 Executive and so have some extra tips: 1) Drive behind a truck which speed is 85 km/hour (53 miles/hour), also you feel less guilthy driving like a snail. 2) Drive as if you do not have any brakes, but I do recommend to brake, when really necessary. 3) Put some block of wood underneath the gass pedal, but be sure it can't move under the brake pedal. 4) Turn on adaptive cruise control and put it on a low speed (don't know if this helps) 5) Leave to your destination, when there is some traffic jam, your average speed will be lower and so will the fuel consumption. 6) When people ask you if they can drive with you to the destination, refuse that and recommend them to walk. This improves fuel consumption. It does not improve human relations. 7) Only drive when the outside temperature is about 15 degrees Celcius, which is 59 degrees Fahrenheit, from my experience the fuel consumption will be the lowest. My lowest fuel consumption ever was 3.0L/100km which is (I need to calculate) = 78.3 miles per gallon, over a distance of 100km (62 mile distance). Hope you have some extra tips for me :-)

The biggest tip for this guy is probably to stick to the posted speed limit. He is doing 48 in a 35 zone (1:00), 56 in a 45 zone (2:59) and 60+ on the highway where the speed limit seems to be 55 (3:43). The biggest tip for non-lead footers is: get off that gaspedal, the speed limit is just that: a LIMIT. Not a minimum speed... (we drive a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid and the average we make is 58 mile/gallon over 19 months -> www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/835233.html )

One of my best tricks for highway driving is to drive right behind a truck, stay close to it. Fuel consumption will be dropped to 70-80 MPG, because of rather small speed of a truck and air that is pulled by this truck in forward direction. If truck driver becomes annoyed by you, then overpass him and use another truck ;)
@alansach8437
@alansach8437 2 жыл бұрын
This does work, but I am told it is very dangerous, especially if the truck driver doesn't know you are there. If he has to brake suddenly you could end up in his rear end. Even if you aren't real close the truck can block wind hitting your front end, cutting wind resistance.
@ittakir
@ittakir 2 жыл бұрын
@@alansach8437 Yes, you should be much more cautious when driving like that. But trucks usually doesn't break hard and you don't need to be very close to it. Recently I used this technique when I was very low on gas and the next gas station was only ~50km ahead. I drove behind a truck. But the truck driver didn't like it and tried to avoid me by speeding up. So I took another truck and finally drove to the gas station. The amount of fuel in the gas tank was 0 liters at that time (I used OBD application to monitor this value).

@@ittakir "Usually" they don't. But if...And you cant see through a truck. So be carefully and keep the save distance. In Germany this distances is "Halber Tacho". So the half of speed in km/h converted to meters. Normally about 50m on the highway. On that distances i still works. But what makes you also use less fuel then, is that you are driving slower. ;-)

I bought a 2011 from Fred Anderson in Raleigh last year, it was off lease car. After a year and 15K miles later I can say what you said makes sense. But I find in the Prius that if you keep the temp at 70 or below on the heater the car saves more gas. I find that driving with ac at full I use less battery because I think the motors are back feeding on the battery I can sit for 20 minutes before the engine kicks on. The only feature I don't like is Ev mode because you really cant take advantage of ev with such a small battery pack unless its the plug in Prius. The ev mode takes over automatically for my car when I am driving in short bursts. I speed so at 80 mph I still average 45 mpg. Last year I hit 60 mpg driving in town, this year I am seeing 54 mpg I think this has to do with this winter the car might of got too cold and the battery might of suffered some. I has been for its regular maintenance. I noticed since it got warm I can fill my 9 gallon take with 10 gallons. I was baffled at the expansion of the bladder bag. I have heard of other prius owners putting 13 gallons because there bladder tank expanded.

Cruise control works great most of the time but it can't anticipate hilly terrain though because we wanna pick up some speed while the road is still level and allow it to lose a little speed on the way up. That way we don't need to floor the throttle.

#1- Only changes how the accelerator "feels". Negligible effect on MPG. #2- Like #1, but with some adjustment to the AC system (see #14). Minor effect on MPG. #3- Hurts MPG. Storing battery energy is inefficient, so stored electricity should be saved for A) To assist long glides (low power), B) assist acceleration, or C) when approaching a long hill. #4. Debatable. Acceleration is best done when the engine is operating at its most efficient RPM, which for the prius is at a more brisk pace, though not more than filling up the pwr bar. #5. Yes. #6. Better to glide in this situation by lightly pressing the accelerator. Otherwise the prius well add some drag while it regens the battery. #7. Yes. #8. Yes. #9. Yes, but on highway driving, the effect isn't very significant. #10. Yes/No. While true the prius has to warm up before it gets its advertised MPG, sitting and burning a bunch of gas in the driveway waiting to warm up isn't going to give you a net improvement. #11. Yes. #12. Yes, but, huh? #13. Yes, but duh. #14. Depends. Lower AC consumption will of course improve MPG, but having a higher fan speed AND warmer temp setting will still cool the car for less energy spent.

I just got a used prius 2013 with about 152k miles. If I just drice to work and back I'm getting 50.1mpg. Obviously I've been using it to go in those little trips to the store, gym , visit family, etc. and I get about 48.1mpg overall. Question, if i used the EV mode for say 1min or 2min because I can go at 25mph would that eventually wear out the battery life? Also, wouldn't that drain battery cause my gas engine to work extra to charge it back up? Thank you in advance

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. We just purchased a Prius and I had heard that you could achieve upwards of 100mpg... haven't seen that yet, but I am definitely gonna work on it :) When I had a "standard" vehicle, I would "dump the clutch" every chance I got and was amazed at the results... do you think that putting the Prius in neutral would be beneficial? I also noticed the transmission has a "B" or "brake" setting... I don't see that as being a huge help in the MPG department but it does seem to charge the battery. Should we use that feature at all? Thanks again!

What does "dump the clutch" mean?
@LoganTheBladesEdge
@LoganTheBladesEdge 8 жыл бұрын
I'm sure by now you have your answer but for anyone else reading this do not use neutral in a Prius, whether you are slowing to a stop or completely stopped with the engine running to recharge a bit if it is in neutral the regenerative system is completely disconnected. I can't explain the technical parts as well as many people can here but as it says in the manual battery no charge at all in neutral, engine braking however works well

I'm not sure you can get a consistent 100mpg unless you are in ev mode, which you can only do for a few miles. If you have to climb any hills at all milage will drop to 25-35 mpg during that stretch. Maybe less on a steep hill. But going down the other side you will get 100mpg! My objective is always more than 50mpg total, but I'm not going to drive dangerously or like a jerk to obtain it. Some trips I get 60-70 (or even a bit more), some trips 40-45. That's just how it is. A few trips I only get 30-35, especially short trips where the gas engine doesn't get a chance to heat up, as in freezing weather. I'm just happy knowing whatever I get it is likely better than I would get in most other cars (except all electric of course.)

After 2 years using a Toyota hybrid I think eco is better in the city but not for long trips. I have the feeling that in eco mode the car number one priority is to charge the battery. Without eco mode I noticed a better millage on long trip and the electric motor seems to boost the gas engine more frequently (uphill for instance) whereas in eco mode the system seems to save the battery, waiting for the full ev mode in town and doing so, tries to never start the electric motor. I might be wrong maybe someone noticed the opposite as the difference is tiny . (hope to be clear, not a native english speaker).

Actually, the "cold start" myth is false. While is will be more comfortable, your vehicle gets the worst mileage while idling. In cold climates, this means the engine will run in the Prius after 7 seconds have passed since startup. It will continue running until you enter the vehicle. Bye bye gas you could have used.

@hxsm8090 3 жыл бұрын
You seemed to not get what a hybrid means when idling. No, you wont use gasoline while idling in a prius. You dont even use them until they get to around ~10mph in eco mode. And cold start (he did mentioned cold weather) is especially true for prius. Batteries dont deliver electrolytes as good in cold weather. Getting battery warmed up before use is making your battery move electrolytes more efficiently, hence better milage.
@BryanDileskiMusic
@BryanDileskiMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@hxsm8090 do you not understand what I’ve stated? As someone whose owned 4 of these vehicles I know that 7 seconds after you press the “engine start” button it will fire up the combustion engine. Don’t talk about what you don’t understand lol. Also, the cells are proven to warm faster while in use. Leaving a Prius to warm in the cold doesn’t do anything but waste gas that could have been used moving. @doctoberfest598 you are the exception. Forged and aluminum parts need time to warm up.

Most tipps a quite good. but Number 10 is nonsense! Cant say that loud enough. Normally the engine starts to warm up with higher revs an loads the battery with the energy. You should start your driving instantly.Otherwise you just burn gas while standing and this is an average of 0miles per gallon ;-) If you start slowly you will hear, that the engine is not reving up, and that means you won't burn more fuel than standing around. Avoid cold starts, thats right! After a cold start, do not "pedal to the metal", but don't let the car warm up while standing around, that saves nothing.

Yes. EV mode is all electric. You aren't using gas at all. It says 100mpg on the readout, but reality is unlimited mpg because you aren't using gas. Limited to one or two miles though before gas kicks in, and only low speed. Eco mode adjusts how the climate control works and makes you press harder on the accelerator for the same results (great for lead foots!). Normal mode is good for 99% of drivers and conditions.
