RATTLE SOLVED FOR ME!! I have a 2010 Toyota Prius with 212k miles. My daughter was using it in college and called me up with a sound byte of the engine rattle. My mechanic said that it had a few miles left but I should start looking to sell it cheap! -I replaced the PCV Valve using the "underneath" method, found that the #1 Cylinder coil had a burn spot on the down tube, so replaced that. -Noise was gone until the next day. Looked under the hood and noticed the coolant was real low. THOUGHT THE WORST!! -Pressure tested the Water system and it held perfectly. -Cleaned the EGR and cooler [super bad but not failed] -Small pickup tube in the intake manifold for #1 cylinder that had the failure was clogged. -Cleaned and re-assembled. NO PROBLEM My suggestion would be: 1. Pressure test the system or have a mechanic [start saving $$ for a 1200$ bill if it is worth it] IF IT HOLDS PRESSURE, 2. Replace the PCV from above and clean out the intake pickups, EGR tube, and since you have most of that stuff off pull the EGR with cooler, chemical clean. {all needs to be done and while you are there might as well} 3. If it does not go away, great. Throw some good injector cleaner in there for a few tanks and call it a done!! ---If not swap the spark plugs and look for burn marks on the down-tubes..

It's the hybrid system (via motor/generator MG1) which is causing the rattling sound in the damper disc. The root cause is the misfiring engine (spark plug, EGR, injector etc.), this misfire is causing a fluctuation of the engine speed (every time a cylinder misfires the engine speed slows down a bit). The hybrid system measures the engine and MG1 rotor speed very accurately and wants to keep it at a chosen speed. So it will compensate the fluctuation of the speed by increasing or decreasing the torque on MG1. This very quick compensation of MG1 is causing the rattling.

that rattling noise is one of the symptoms of blown head gasket. The same exact thing happened to my 2010 Toyota prius. I changed spark plugs the first time and it was good. Bu t the next day engine rattling came back and I found out it was the head gasket because overnight coolant seeps into the combustion chambers and we know that you cannot compress fluid or liquid thats why it rattles on cold start. I changed head gasket and all aasociated gaskets and seals, so far ao good. I'm already at 15k miles ever since.

Success hurrah update after all the attempts at diagnosing this rattling ice engine I finally fixed it?, it wasn't the intake manifold nor EGR valve nor cylinder head gasket or as I suspected a faulty Throttle Position Sensor. I am a retired mechanic with many years in industry so I may be rusty but I do know what I'm talking about and I hope this story helps others avoid getting ripped off. I had replaced the spark plugs in its service along with oil and filter, there was zero indication of a head issue as no fluid loss, no smoke from exhaust, no overheating, no oil in the water or visa versa, I did get a code multiple misfires which after clearing a few times settled on misfire detected on Cylinder 4 I moved plugs around but fault came back still saying no4 so I moved the coil packs and still it said no4 so not plug nor coil pack. I blocked the EGR with a thin blade and the fault was still there rattling and a new code "insufficient flow through EGR system" I removed the blade, I also removed the EGR assembly thoroughly cleaned it, and the pipe to the intake manifold and used long brushes to decarbonisation the manifold once removed, I also cleaned up the throttle body and bought the specific cleaner for the MAF sensor, all of the above were dirty and will have benefitted from the good cleaning but they weren't the cause of the shake rattle and roll between 1450-1550 RPM so what else was there?? the injectors are electronically controlled pulse so as it was an easy test I dismantled just enough to remove them and move the one from no4 and put it in no1 cylinder, reassemble clear codes and run engine, fault obviously still there but importantly the fault code had moved with the injector, just to double confirm I repeated this process this time putting suspect injector into no3 cylinder and sure enough the new code said misfire No3, so I ordered a aftermarket set which were about $80AUD delivered, I installed them this morning and once the system depressurised the engine ran smooth, I erased codes and disconnected both battery systems to enable the car to reset to factory, at least that's how some forums recommended a full reset, after reconnecting batteries and trying a few times to get car to start it finally did and was smooth so I boxed everything up final check for fuel leaks, all good, out to road test. instantly she felt like a new car switching between ice and electric smoothly, acceleration back to full power, cruising excellant, no sign of feel of a misfire, no rattles bangs pops or shakes, it quite literally was perfect and a massive relief I had finally found and fixed the problem, shame my ODBC which has the Lexus software installed couldn't pick up the faulty injector out of the gate would have saved soooo muuuch time and effort, all up though it has cost me several hours researching and testing but less than a couple of hundred dollars to fix, heaven knows what a Lexus dealership would have tried to screw me for. I just have one tiny issue since reconnecting batteries there is a warning "Check Hybrid System" which is odd as on road test pressing the DISP button with right thumb on steering wheel I can see the system switching exactly as it is supposed to charging discharging and switching ice to electric and back, I feel there isn't an actual problem because there wasn't prior and this is just something that needs resetting so a little more research unless anyone can give me a clue. I hope my story helps others having same issue, I thank all forum inputs but nobody suggested injectors so maybe this can be added to list to be checked when encountering this mysterious shake rattle and roll of the ct200h.

I had same noise. Changed plugs changed a coil pack. Took apart the intake. It was a clogged EGR elbow.

Is it possible for this clutch damper to go bad on its own. I have a new Toyota hybrid with only 22000 miles and it makes a very slight rattling noise (similar to this) when warming up in the morning, maybe for the first few minutes or miles, then it stops. I've had the car checked by the dealership and they said the computers are not showing any misfires or other errors. Could it be just the dampener failing? Or, is it possible it's normal to have a slight rattle noise from the damper as the engine warms up and runs a little rough?

I have a 2012 prius v with 162k miles which i recently bought and the previous owner did not take good care of the car. I recently have cleaned the Mass air flow sensor, throttle body, changed the oil, cabin, engine and oil filter also changed the spark plugs. I Watched your videos and changed the coolant and inverter coolant also. Recently in the mornings or at night when it is cold, the engine makes noise like in this video for few seconds. The car drives smooth, i have checked the oil dipstick to see if it is soapy to indicate if coolant is leaking in it but its clean, coolant levels are good also. Do you think it could be dirty EGR? Only one light is on and thats the traction control, everything else is good.

I had a same experience with my previous Camry Hybrid. The problem was only the electrical connection to the injector was loosen.

Replaced spark plugs, injecters, and cleaned egr,manifold,egr cooler. Had motor rebuilt. Still has noise. Also, it says to put it in park.dampner?

I have a Gen 2 Prius vs the Gen 3 you have here. The sparkplugs were replaced a few weeks ago. I was 2 miles or so leaving from home and all of a sudden the triangle came on, the engine stopped, and I coasted to a stop! Wow. Anyway I got it started, but it ran awful, clanky like the one in this video. I tried to drive on, but it did not smooth out. I managed to get it home. I cleaned the MAP sensor (did not seem dirty), replaced the air filter, made sure the throttle throat was reasonably clean, and I replaced the injectors with rebuilt ones. None of this resolved the problem. It may have run better a few seconds, i don't know. Could it be the EGR / carboned up manifold? The EGR system seems different than the Gen 3? Why did it go from running just fine to awful in about 1 second? These type things come on real gradual like. I don't see any indications of a blown head gasket, no smoke or coolant in the oil. Could it be bad gas?

I have a knocking sound once in a while. It is an Auris hybrid 2014, but the engine looks the same.

My 2014 Prius with 210,000 miles, intermittently has a small shutter sound in the engine compartment at speeds of 4 mph and up to 35 mph, I don't hear it over 40 mph. And I don’t feel it in the steering wheel or car at all. I took it to the dealer for service. He diagnosed misfiring, but could not observe any misfire. He said Spark plugs looked fouled. Service Technician recommended and preformed: Replacement the spark plugs and Replaced one coil of cylinder 4 and He also performed an ECU update. After service complete, I am experiencing the same small shutter, with a lot more frequently at the same speeds. It shutters often now. Will this cause any harm to drive it like this. I do a lot of long-distance Interstate highway driving at 65 to 80 mph in Texas and Louisianna?

Will the clogged egr passages cause a misfire at idle? I remember years ago Honda 4 cylinder engines would misfire under a load if some of the passages were clogged because all of the egr gasses would go to the cylinder where the passageway wasn't clogged. There is no egr at idle.

My 2013 Prius had this shake. It turned out to be one bad coil pack (diagnosed by the check engine code). Replaced all coils and one spark plug. The EGR scenario fortunately was not the problem this time.

My 2013 Prius C (USA) has the exact sounds when it starts up. Took it to the mechanic and they said it needs the head gasket. $2,500 just for that plus if any parts are broken/needed in the process. Oil looks good not milky, coolant looks totally fine. What’s your input?

OK... So I had this noise come up in my 2010 Prius 3.... Attacked it first by cleaning the EGR Valve, then replacing the EGR valve, then spark plugs, then I cleaned the injectors, then I cleaned the EGR tube and intake EGR passages, then finally I replaced the Head Gasket. Still no joy. The exact shake and rattle changed slightly to begin with I was getting it to clear up by disconnecting the coil to Cylinder 1, but since the last bits, the coils don't stop it at all, but cylinder 4 disconnecting diminishes the shake and rattle. I'm not losing coolant (never was) so I don't think its an issue with the cylinders. I had a mechanic friend (who doesn't specialize in hybrids) tell me it COULD be the clutch plates damaged. Any thoughts out there to that end?

you did not show us how you got the spark plugs and coil pack without taking the wiper motors and stuff???? did you take out the throttle body out of the manifold or you just fliped it?

Hi. I need help please. My 2010 prius, 97k miles , rattles on cold start when converting to engine. Rattle lasts for about 20 secs and then settles. Spent lot of money.. changed EGR, spark plugs, cleaned manifold. But made no difference. I keep a track of coolant level. There has been no coolant loss at all since last 5 months.. My mech says it can be broken spring of a worn fly wheel. As there is no drop in coolant level, could it be possible that its not the head gasket? Does flywheel noise present this way? Also. I notice that during start while still on battery, if I put the mode in D ( with brake applied) the rattling doesn't happen when the engine kicks, as long as gear is in D. The rattling happens when in P mode only and not when in D mode . Any idea what this could be ? Any help is appreciated.thanks

i have the same noise, i changed the headgasket rebuild injectors ... but still the same. In "N" no noise or really less; car is running ok with the electric motor but when the engine start the noise start also. If an idea i am ready. Thank you.

I am having the same issue i believe but the rattling noise does not persist. The rattling noise often starts when the engine is coming out of hybrid mode then it starts to rattle for a few seconds then stop.... then i wont hear the rattling sound again until a few days. Could it be one of those issue? My car is a 2017 toyota aqua with only 42 thousand mileage on it.

My 2011 has always had this scenario when it is short cycled on a cold start. EG: need to move the car after being parked all night. Start it, move it, and shut it off before the engine can finish its initial warm and charge cycle. The next time the engine is turned on (that day. Not days later) it will clatter like that for 10 seconds or less and then even out. It may be a vapor/condensing issue in the cylinders from the short cycle.

This is what happened to my car.. got plugs changed and cleaned up.. I asked them to do a transmission oil change as well.. they gave me back the car and it started to shudder... I told them.. they were puzzled.. so brought it back..and now they said I need a new transmission>>>?? my trans was running fine... now I need a new one?? How can I fix it without needing a new one.. because it seems odd.. was working fine.. now it doesnt?? it shudders at lower speeds..????

Gin brush cleans manifold ports in 10 minutes no chemicals brush and air .

Since the EGR is closed at startup and idle, having clogged EGR ports shouldn't cause that misfire.

What if engine shake and coolant low, is that head gasket?

You need to add a baffled oil catch can , and you will not get this at startup anymore.

That's the death shake not the rattle. Definitely the head gasket

I have the same problem with my car.but no voice.only hesitates.misfires in cold engine.engine hesitates in idle. computer checks P0302, (sometimes P0304,) P0300, P0316 codes .After heating runs good in highway. I changed spark plugs, ignition coils, evap, cleaned egr , fuel injectors,throttle body, changed engine and transmission mounts,changed intake manifold gaskets.But there is no change. And checked compression test in normally hot engine.it's 10 in all cylinders.( fabrical must be 12.3).please help me.I don't know what to do for solving this problem. Thanks

Can I ask you a question? I have the Same rattle in my 2010 Toyota Prius with 203k miles on it. There is a sloshy , watery sound behind the dash when the gas engine kick is in on start up or when the hybrid system kicks off at coasting lower speeds . Could this be the same thing, or the famous head gasket give out? Thank you in advance

That generation has high susceptibility to burning oil... Prius owners in North America also have a poor maintenance reputation (5k mile oil changes is crucial) PCV at spark plug change. (60k PCV is better) . Transmission fluid at 60k is good too. EGR should be done, symptoms or not, at 60k.

Mine made this today for about 15 seconds at start up, then stopped. Didn't make the noise the rest of the day.

hi everyone, if anyone can help me out here. i have got toyota prius 2018 100k miles on it. was losing very little coolant so decided to replace the water pump myself with genuine toyota part. after changing the water pump i have to top up coolant a lot. as this is car is used as taxi i top up at least three times a day. no visible leaks, pressure test done but no leaks. in the morning when i open the coolant tank to top up coolant it has air pressure when opening the cap like air trapped inside the system. also i don't see any oil contamination in the system as well. any help is much appreciated.

That knocking on cold start normally means the head gasket has failed, it’s a common issue on the Prius. The failure is normally the worst at cylinder #1. I can bo longer recommend buying these with such a critical design flaw. Toyota will charge you ~$4000 and that may be a bandaid fix depending on how long the coolant was seeping into the cylinders.

You dod not show cleaning or temoving the egr cooler thats the clog point its stainless steel right behind egr valve
