@@pitbullgamer8116 Same here mate,, I done my trade at a Mack / Volvo dealership workshop in Cairns Australia, i could rebuild an 18 speed roadranger before i was qualified trade,,, that was 20 odd years ago now,, but to save downtime on the trucks , these days they just swap them out and send the old box back to Eaton where they rebuild ready for the next truck... rebuilding egines and gearboxes was a big part of 4th year apprenticeship, but the kids these days are just swapping them out and don't know how they work inside,,

One man Army! Love that you have the kids puttering around the shop in the background. I think its great for kids to be exposed to this kind of stuff early so they learn a college degree wont always buy you everything. Someone always has to do the dirty work...and sometimes...the dirty work is fun and just as rewarding.

Someone will end up with a super well maintained truck when this is all over. I sure hope you continue resto-modding these old Toyota’s. They are slowly gaining in value due to the notoriety surrounding their indestructible engineering.

Years ago, I had this exact same truck. All the gauges, shift rods, body style, 3 liter V6 engine, 4WD, and the exact same engine sound and startup sound. *sigh* I miss that truck something terrible, I'm gonna cry after watching this video. :(

Great work and very creative. My recommendation for pressing in bearings is to place them in the freezer for at least 4 hours prior to assembly.
@todhowell5049
@todhowell5049 Жыл бұрын
Finally got mine done. First thing i want to say is that there are several variants of this R150 f. It looks like they tried to upgrade or make it a little more simpler. On the shift rods, yours had two of those pins that go in through the 2nd and 3rd rod that connects those detents. My 98 had one pin. Your detents were different sizes ,mine were all the same size. But its a great video to go by and like you say,as long as you pay attention to how everything comes apart, it's pretty easy. I messed up and let someone else pull the gears and shifting rods out, and so when he put it back together,he had two of the rods turned wrong. The 3rd one down ( which was 180 out and wouldn't let it shift) and the small rod turned wrong ( which wouldn't let the reverse return catch) therefore not disengaging reverse all the way and letting it be able to go into 2 gears at once. ( Reverse and first). So pay close attention to the cutouts on the rods cause they are different sizes and are meant to be clocked one way.
@todhowell5049
@todhowell5049 Жыл бұрын
Well i didn't mess up by having someone help. I didn't have a press to do the bearings,so he helped me out alot by doing my bearings for me. I just wished that i had pulled the forks out,so i could see how they went back in, that way if there was a problem, you dont have to guess at what someone else may or may not have done. Plus he has rebuilt a few and i trusted him. We all make mistakes and it was a small one, its just that i had to pull the tranny to rearrange the rod.

Great video for anyone trying to do a Toyota 5-speed, or just great viewing for those of us that are interested in stuff like this. I don't care how many times you do something, that initial start up or gear shift is still a little thrill. In your first video, when you were letting down the tranny on the lift, you were reaching through the jack to ease the lift down. One wrong move and the jack would have crushed your arm. I'm not one to tell people how to do something, but I would hate to see someone get hurt.

In my early car days I had an Opel Cadet Wagon that 2nd gear would pop out when you were really needing it to pull. I was advised that the spring with the ball bearing was weak and to replace it. That was my only successful transmission repair. I never got my MGA MK2 Transmission back together. All Hail your accomplishment!

I don’t know about y’all but when I’m reassembling things I’ve taken part & it goes easy I start to worry. Normally things don’t go so easy for me but when they so I wonder every time what I did wrong & when it will reveal itself.lol My last project was replacing the front seals on my 4x4 tractor. It was a nightmare taking it apart but when I reassembled it everything went well & when I got to the very last part about to put locktite on the bolts I realized I forgot a single ring & had to redo it all.

Dude that was another awesome project! I wish I could buy that truck! I could sleep like a baby knowing it was in tip top shape. I agree some basic mechanical intuition and a willingness to dive in and be methodical really pays off. Also watching you has been an even bigger boost in general confidence. I enjoy working on my 4runner and learning more and keeping it up. I like understanding what's going on inside. Mine is a 4th gen. A few guys on the forums have done manual transfer swaps and one guy did a swap to a manual transmission. I'm interested in the first, though my electronic actuators are doing fine, but not having the potential of an electrical failure is nice pics of mind. Your big advantage, other than a nice roomy shop setup, is having another car. I'm always a lot worried that I'll mess up my daily driver and have to worry about getting to work and picking up the kids, etc. Anyway cool videos. Looking forward to watching the new build. Take care!

Nice job on the rebuild. What I find most interesting is that these Tacomas don't use a return spring on the release fork to keep the throw out bearing off the pressure plate. No issues when everything is new, but add some miles and clutch dust. And you won't know if the bearing has been riding the pressure plate until it goes bad. Weird.

Clever way to lock the shafts together I will definitely do that on my reassembly ('88 rx7, almost identical. Mazda must have outsourced to Aisin for gearboxes too). I ended up using an old clutch plate clamped in a second vice with it shifted into gear when I took it apart

You lock the shafts from turning to torque the nut....manual says to put trans in 3rd and 2nd gear....I put the trans cover on backward to hold the input and counter bearings together so gears cant skip. Also have someone hold a 5lbs hammer on the other end of shafts when pounding on 5th gear and bearings...I put the front of the shaft against a wall when alone....

There is one critical step that I see you did not do . Whenever the trans jump gears you need to measure distance between the gear and sincronizer cones engaged gears they tent to pull a part because no clutch shifting if the clearance is to litter it can be reduce or enlarge on a press

So if the case is a totally sealed unit, why would Toyota use sealed ball bearings? That's why the bearing failed in the place. Lack of lubrication. The side shields should have been removed to allow the gear oil to constantly flow through the bearings.
