This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime and the 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV, both are plug-in hybrid compact SUVs.The Tucson PHEV is longer than the RAV4 Prime. They have about the same front legroom but the Tucson offers almost 2” more second row legroom. Space behind the second row and overall cargo capacity goes to the Prime at 69.8 cubic feet compared to the Tucson at 66.3 cubic feet. The Tucson plug-in hybrid has less power and EV range compared to the Prime. It is powered by a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, a 6-speed automatic transmission and a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, 53 km/33 miles of EV range. The RAV4 Prime has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid system, an ECVT, 302 total system horsepower and 68 km/42 miles of EV range. Both vehicles come with standard AWD and you can put regular fuel in them. For EV rebates in Canada, plug-in hybrids with a battery that is 15 kWh or greater qualify for the $5,000 EV rebate. The RAV4 Prime has an 18.1 kWh battery, so it meets the requirements. The Tucson PHEV has a 13.8 kWh battery; it only qualifies for half of the rebate, $2500. There are also Provincial rebates available in participating provinces. In the US, the RAV4 Prime qualifies for a tax credit up to $7,500 and the Tucson plug-in hybrid up to $6,587. It’s hard to beat the value the Tucson PHEV offers, it comes with so many standard features in Canada including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, an 8” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto plus a hands-free power liftgate. The RAV4 Prime doesn’t offer as many base model features, it has a 7” touchscreen, heated front seats, a power driver seat and a heated steering wheel. To get the extra features you have to move up to the top trim and /or buy packages.The Tucson PHEV is spacious and comfortable with plenty of storage. The base model comes loaded with so many standard features making it a difficult one to beat for value. These features include, an 8” touchscreen, a 10.25” digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power drivers seat, leather trimmed interior, panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, a hands-free smart liftgate, ambient lighting and a Bose sound system. The top Ultimate trim for an extra $2700 CAD has some extra features like driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, 64-colour ambient lighting, a surround view monitor, 10.25” touchscreen with wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto. In the US there are two trims to choose from the base trim for under $35,000 offers minimal features to keep that low price point. It has cloth seats, a power drivers seat, heated front seats and an 8” touchscreen. The top trim has all the extra features that we listed in the Canadian base and top trims. The RAV4 Prime has a comfortable, practical and versatile interior with plenty of storage with the battery mounted underneath the floor. Standard features include, an 8” touchscreen, a 7” multi-information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front cloth seats, 8-way power driver’s seat and a heated steering wheel. In the US, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats are not standard, you’ll find these features in the weather and moonroof package on the base trim. The top trim in Canada has the larger 9” touchscreen, a wireless charger, mixed Softtex and perforated leather seats, heated rear seats, power lfitgate and a moonroof. Add the Technology package for $5400 CAD to get driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, ventilated front seats, head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, a power rear door with kick sensor, an 11-speaker JBL Audio system and a Bird’s eye view camera. In the US, the top XSE trim has four packages for you to choose from ranging in price from $815 to over $5300. In these packages you’ll find a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, the JBL audio system and the panoramic sunroof.
The Prime earns a combined city/highway rating of 2.5Le/100km, that’s 94 MPGe, the Tucson PHEV 2.9Le/100km, 80 MPGe.
The Prime starts at $44,990 CAD/$38,350 USD and the Tucson $43,499 CAD/$34,900 USD.

Thanks so much for what must have been one of the most anticipated comparisons. Your thoughtful comparisons really has set you guys apart from other reviewers. Sélection decisions is a very big part of car buying and you are helping viewers big time! I am lucky to be able to test drive both vehicles and would happily buy either. Both are super efficient and good to drive. Fact that I had no hope of getting a RAV4 prime and able to get Tucson PHEV, helped me make the buying decision! So far no regrets and loving it. Yesterday I managed 60 Kim’s of pure EV range, and also to date, still on my first tank of gas, and 1240kms showing on my odometer.!!! Gas at $1.81 a litre in Vancouver………….priceless!!

Great video! People often don't do the math on resale value / "bank of Toyota" they only look at percentages. Here in the US, a fully loaded top trim Tucson is $42,700. A fully loaded, top trim RAV4 Prime is $48,470. If you assume 55% for Tucson and 60% for RAV4, the difference is a mere +$173 net when you sell the Toyota because it's so much more expensive - and you're sacrificing so many more features. I should also mention here in the US it's much easier to get a Tucson, dealers quoting a 3-4 month wait, and it's easy to find one at MSRP. Rav4 Primes are impossible to get and generally speaking you're paying a $10,000 markup. Not worth it! So I went with the Tucson PHEV. But I have to agree, just put your name in everywhere. I waited until I finished researching and ended up wasting a month - my vehicle could have been here that much sooner.

@Andrea Spencer Plus, Toyota offers higher financing interest rate than Hyundai in general. At the end, you're paying way more. It cancels Toyota resale value benefit.

The RAV4 Prime is almost as fast as my Tesla Model Y from 60-90mph. The 302hp combine electric and gas motor is no joke. It's a performance SUV and not a family hauler...
@5DollarHoller
@5DollarHoller 2 жыл бұрын
@@voxel999 Sounds powerful! The whole 0-60 or 0-90 is not really a compelling performance statistic for me personally. How often are you at a full stop and need to get to highway speeds that fast? For me, I use 0-30 mph more frequently, and the Tucson is only 0.4s or so slower than RAV4 or a full EV. I'm not going to notice half a second ever. The RAV4 definitely makes better use of the battery in EV-only mode, without a doubt. I'm just not willing to trade worse tech and worse interior for the 1-2 times a year that I punch the acceleration to the max.

I own a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 18' and I strongly suggest to avoid this SUV. There are so many things I dislike about it, the list would be so long! I placed an order for a Tucson PHEV in Aug. 2021 and I am still waiting for it. Delivery is scheduled for Feb. 2022 (7 months wait). Why I did't choose a Rav4 ? Simply because it seems like Toyota is not serious about outputting Rav4 PHEV's (even before the shortage), its only a publicity stunt. It's useless to wait for a unicorn. Also, Hyundai has a really good warranty coverage and unlike the Rav4, the Tucson has real 4x4 (AWD) system, ideal for Canadian winters.
@voxel999
@voxel999 2 жыл бұрын
I think Toyota deprioritizes the Canadian market because of the lower profit margins. I've owned a Prime SE and Prime XSE here in Florida. Toyota can get $5K more for the car in the US and our dealers add $3K-5K on top of the price with add-ons and fees. It's capitalism at its best and worst.
@smaltais417
@smaltais417 2 жыл бұрын
You are right about the fact it looks like profit is driving Toyota's decisions. I do strongly think Toyota chose to output HEV instead of PHEV's and their production stats prove it. Why ? maybe because Toyota can sell 10 HEV instead of 1 PHEV with the same battery size? For those who remember, the NYT alleged that a Toyota executive met with congress leaders in the US behind closed doors to advocate against the proposal to accelerate the shift to EVs, so Toyota is promoting HEV all the way because they lead in HEV. Toyota is free to choose what they want to sell (HEV), that's their business, but having buyers waiting for a PHEV product with no real intentions to produce it in quantities, is disrespectful to customers waiting.

We plan on selling it as soon as we receive our Ioniq 5 tho as we are madly in love with it.

Unique does not equal good looking. Otherwise the Pontiac Aztek would be the best looking car of all time. As far as eye-catching, yes, it's true it catches your eye because it's different. Seems like the Prime is more efficient, better power, better electric motor power, engine and reliability, better for short trips, spare tire, but the Tucson has better interior (though not sure how the Tucson base looks in the US), better off-road abilities and may be $3900 cheaper than the base Prime after the rebate. Break-even for the better efficiency is for too many years to care.

I was lucky enough to get a Rav4 Prime last year. Based on reviews I have seen, the Tuscon seems like a better value, but a lot of it comes down to preference as to what you put the value on. I personally prefer the more utilitarian interior style of the Rav4 and have no real complaints with my car to date. Regarding the engine coming on in EV mode, I have to say I see no difference between EV mode and EV/Auto mode - I don’t actually see the point of EV/Auto mode. The gas engine definitely comes more when it is colder, even if you don’t have the heater on (short trips I just use the seat heaters).

Hi Andrea and Zack, I ´m not quite sure on your evaluation on this 2 Phev. First , powertrain R4P 2.5 L naturally aspirated ECVT hybrid with 3 electric motor and a 18.1 kw batt. Tucson 1.6 turbo 6 speed transmission hybrid with 2 electric motors and 13.8 kw batt. R4P in my opinion made it simple and reliable. Tucson put a lot under the hood , turbo,inter cooler,plumbing , trans clutches …Second range on electric and hybrid Toyota hybrid system is more efficient and the 2.5 Atkinson engine is also more efficient then Hyundai system. Third, Heat Pump R4P comes with a heat pump Tucson doesn’t so when the cold season come around your are not always running the gas engine for heat. Power,,, R4P superior power just blows the doors of the Tucson with it’s turbo that will see in time how that goes. Fifth , resale value there again Toyota has a better resale value over Hyundai .But of course the Tucson interior is nice but I feel Hyundai put more time and money to get that WoW factor and didn’t put it where in my opinion it counts. So for me it’s hands down the R4P for all the above and more.

How do you compare them when the Hyundai needs to run the gas engine to keep the cabin warm and or defrosted. Here in NY state and at least a 1/3 of the US and all of Canada it’s below 50 degrees in the morning from September thru may on average. If you live in Florida I’m sure this doesn’t matter but everywhere else it does. Due to this there is no comparison, the room mode in the Toyota allows you to precondition the interior on cold mornings while it’s still connected to the charger . I use mine everyday in my unheated garage. I get in a fully charged vehicles at 73 degrees inside w seats and steering wheel toasty warm,no exhaust in my garage,it’s part of the benefits of having a plug in ev and the Hyundai has nothing but traditional ice method of running a cold gas engine in its most inefficient range producing maximum pollutants warming up while getting the worst mpg. Where is the benefit to ppl in the north ,it’s no better than a hybrid for 8 months if the year that’s how it’s going to operate with the heat on. I agree the Hyundai is beautiful inside but I’d rather be warm in the Toyota than cold in the Hyundai,and have the proven reliable Toyota hybrid system with over 300 hp available

Lots to like on the Tucson … but the inability to run in EV mode during cold weather or preheat in a garage (ICE needs to run to produce heat) seems like a deal breaker for me. Interior, tech, and mechanical AWD are nice - handling is supposed to be better according to some, too. Tough choice.

A clarification on the USA tax credits. The credit only offsets what is owed for the year. For example, if your federal tax owed in $6000, that’s all you’ll get back even though the federal tax credit on a RAV4 is $7500. You won’t get more back then what you owed.

Some brands like Kia will build a car for the client and if that client chooses to not take delivery of the factory ordered unit then that Kia store is not allowed to keep that ordered vehicle to sell to someone else! Kia Canada will pick up that unit and take it another kia dealership that has that order to fill!

For these 2 hot selling PHEV, you probably won't need to go to their showrooms except to try out their infotainment systems cause you can't even get a proper test drive. Then decide on which one has shorter waiting list, in relative speaking. Styling, brand image, interior quality and even taxpayer's rebate are likely behind those mentioned reasons. They are so damn hot selling cause PHEV makes so much senses, especially in trusted brands like Toyota and Hyundai. And I don't even consider Escape even if it has AWD PHEV due to its poor execution on standard engines.

In my experience Hyundai PHEV reliability is awful. I own a 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV, which experienced hybrid system failure on i95 (nearly causing an accident) on Aug 31, 2021. Two months later, during which time the Hyundai dealer made two unsuccessful repair attempts, I picked up my car only to have Hybrid system failure occur for the third time before I even made it to the first traffic light. The service center then told me the car (under warranty) needs a new battery pack, which I have been waiting for over the past FIVE months. The car has been out of service for SEVEN months and Hyundai has refused all buyback attempts. I bought a new Rav4 Prime in Feb…..If I ever get my Hyundai back it will be sold.

The only hesitation I have on the Hyundai is the small GDI engine with a turbo....that's a lot of constant pressure on a small 4 cylinder....time will tell.

Summary: RAV4 Prime looks, feels dated, yet has more power, longer pure EV range, better fuel economy when battery is depleted, able to use pure EV range without using once in a while the ICE even in cold for heating the cabin, has better cargo practicality, larger battery and tax rebates. In the USA only in the higher trim internal charger is 7.5 kW for Prime. Tucson PHEV always has 7.5 internal AC charger, more comfort, better room in the second seat, heated rear seats, electrically adjustable both front seats and mechanical AWD rending better handling of snow and light off road. Both are or will become very hard to find, have very comparable close ground clearance and comparable warranty and towing capacity. Today reliability difference between 2 is meaningless. Yet the resale value of RAV4 is higher based on brand perception. Conclusion: after watching video one becomes more torn apart which to choose or simply go with brand perception/loyalty/availabulity. Only upcoming Outlander PHEV new generation might disturb these 2 parity in their tug of war. However I have to laud Andrea’s mom for picking Tucson since in colder climate even RAV4 has to start its ICE to heat the cabin yielding the advantages to Hyundai vs Toyota: more updated interior, infotainment, comfortable/power adjustable seats and plushier ride and a huge bonus for winter in Canada - heated rear seats plus better handling of dipper snow when needed.

Really wish car makers would stop with the glossy, piano black plastic on the touch surfaces inside their vehicles. The RAV4 interior is uninspiring, but the screen placement is better and they don't use that aggravating piano black plastic. I'm a bit of a utilitarian, so I appreciate the spare tire and the longer EV range. I'll also take the naturally aspirated ICE over the turbocharger for reliability. The RAV4 makes up for its higher up-front cost with better reliability over the long term plus its resale value. All that said, the Tuscon is a great value, as is the 23 Kia Sportage.

In the U.S. the rebates are almost the same for both... the real problem is which one can you get before the rebates go away? In the U.S. the Tuscon seems the better deal since the wait time is far less than the Rav4 Prime, the $3200 difference in price, and faster charge times... of course, we do not know the long-term resale on the Tuscon yet... so, there's that.
